Adam Lambert Rocks Out to ‘Whole Lotta Love’

May 6, 2009 by

Hands down the performance of the night was Adam Lambert’s “Whole Lotta Love”. He was authentic and commanding. There will be haters. You are wrong. (Just kidding, enjoy who you like). He just happened to be my favorite of the night.

That was definitely my favorite performance of Adams, he should really make an album like that! I can be sometimes a hater of Adams (the screaming gets on my nerves sometimes) but he is one seriously talented person.

He’s definitely a talent guy, but talented screeching is still screeching. I just don’t find him to be pleasant to listen to.

I don’t get all the claims that Adam “screeches.” I wonder if it’s just a matter of how different people hear music/sounds differently. He definitely has a piercing tenor voice, but I clearly hear actual melodic notes when he sings, whether he’s falsing in the upper register or belting out his signature wails. I absolutely love his unique sound.

I also wonder if, since the judges don’t ever comment on Adam’s “screeching,” if he sounds different in person than he does transmitted through some listeners’ TV sets. I recently rented Ten Commandments, the Musical (pretty bad movie, but some good musical numbers), in which Adam performs a gorgeous solo and in various ensemble numbers. What amazed me is how, even when Adam wasn’t on camera, I could pick his voice out from among a stage full of singers. I’d hear what I thought was Adam, and then, sure enough, after a minute or two, they’d pan over to the part of the stage he was occupying and his lips would be matching the vocal I’d picked out. Since he was virtually unknown at the time the movie was made, the fact that throughout several numbers they highlighted his vocals from among a huge ensemble cast, indicates that professionals in the music world agree with those of us who maintain that Adam sings fabulously and melodically, not screechingly.

Finally, all indications are that the guest mentors and the other contestants who have been hearing him practice and perform for weeks, don’t think he screeches, either. The mentors have all praised Adam’s vocal skills, as have the contestants who have been eliminated from the show, and one of those still on the show has recently bestowed the greatest flattery by obviously trying to copy him.

Anyway, regardless of whether you like his voice, I think it would be difficult to deny that he’s incredibly talented. One might not like his style or loud wails, but being able to belt them out in key is more than most people would be able to do.
