BETTER OFF TED Will Be Back for Season 2

May 15, 2009 by

I’m trying my best to keep up with all the pre-Upfront buzz.  I’ll keep passing along the news as its released from various sources.

The incredibly fantastic news that ABC will renew BETTER OFF TED comes courtesy of @EWAusielloFiles (Michael Ausiello).

If you missed out on BETTER OFF TED’s first season, do yourself a favor and go find it online or see if you can’t rent it.  It was a short season so it will be easy to catch up.  This quirky and irreverent show was a bright spot on the ABC schedule and I couldn’t be happier that the show will be back.

SCRUBS Renewed by ABC

May 15, 2009 by

Really? Ok.  ABC will announced that despite its final feeling finale, SCRUBS will return next season. Both Zach Braff and Sarah Chalke have supposedly agreed to return for six episodes next season. According to THRfeed.com, “Donald Faison, John C. McGinley and Neil Flynn have closed deals to continue as regulars. Judy Reyes was not been approached, but may guest star.”  Huh? Carla only guest starring? How does that work?

Personally I don’t get it. Why have such a lavish finale only to bring the show back? Despite the naysayers, it’s not like ABC gave the show much more respect than NBC.  Yes, it was definitely promoted more (at first), but the show moved around the schedule from week to week. Tuesdays two episodes, some weeks just one.  Other weeks it was on Wednesdays. Confusing.

I know SCRUBS has a large fanbase but I think they should have let this show go out in style.

Are you happy about the return of SCRUBS next season?  Chime in below.

ABC Picks Up COUGAR TOWN, HAPPY TOWN & Renews CASTLE

Fans of CASTLE will be getting a little more Nathan Fillion next season. Tuesday during their Upfront presentations, ABC will be announcing it’s renewing cop/novelist dramady for a second season. Good move ABC.

The alphabet network will also officially pick up COUGAR TOWN, a comedy about a 40-something mother (Courtney Cox-Arquette) who is newly single and looking; as well as HAPPY TOWN “a mystery set in the hamlet of Happy Town, which had enjoyed a seven-year peace after a series of kidnappings until it is hit by another crime”.

Is “town” the new trend over at ABC? Will be hearing about LOST TOWN and DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES TOWN soon?

Fox Returns to the DOLLHOUSE for Season 2

May 15, 2009 by

Fox won’t be announcing their Fall schedule until Monday’s Upfronts in NYC but sources tell THR.com that DOLLHOUSE is a go for Season 2.

The ratings challenged show had a rollercoaster season. Expectations were high but for me, only a few of the 13 episodes truly delivered. That being said, I have faith that S2 will be stronger than this past season.  Joss Whedon and crew will have the time to plot, plan and develop the show that they want.  This season started off on shaky ground and I don’t think anyone involved thought things went exactly as planned. But having some security for another season may be just what the creative team needs to find the right balance.

Regular readers of GMMR might be surprised to find out that I’m actually really excited about the prospect of a second season.  I have high hopes that the kinks will be worked out and the problems they had this year will be ironed out.  Maybe DOLLHOUSE will become another Joss Whedon classic and we’ll be looking back at Season 1 and laugh.

I’m pulling for the show.  I know it may not seem like it, but I am.

SMALLVILLE Season Finale

Once again please let me take a moment to thank another member of Team GMMR that has brought so much to the site this year.  Sarah first joined the team taking on weekly reviews of CALIFORNICATION. When she offered to take on one of her personal favorites, SMALLVILLE, I was so happy.  As I’ve said before, I’m thrilled when new people join the team that can cover shows not previously talked about here on the site.  So the Sarah and to all of the members of the GMMR community who contributed to her reviews, I say thanks!

Surprised anyone? I knew that we were in for a clever twist (per the Cassidy Freeman interview) but I didn’t guess we would witness the death of three characters on Smallville! The easy prediction was Davis Bloome but not Jimmy Olsen. He is such a key figure in the Superman storyline. Who would have thought the show runners would kill him off?!

Although it was sad to see him go they did send him off in style. Jimmy finally got the confirmation from Clark himself that he is in fact the red blue blur. He made amends with Chloe, finally gave her his wedding present and saved her life from Davis Bloome.

When it comes to Davis Bloome dying, well that was inevitable. We knew from the start that Doomsday wouldn’t last and neither could Davis but the death of Clark Kent as well? After shunning his kryptonian side for so long and embracing the human part of him, Clark has decided that putting the race up on a pedestal is where he went wrong. Initially I thought this was part of the twist minus Jimmy dying but I had it all wrong! On to the highlights of last night’s episode.

In the opening of this week’s episode Clark must make q choice for all of mankind. Told by Rokk that by saving Chloe he has also in turn saved Doomsday, Clark contemplates his destiny. Rokk explains that tomorrow is the day he dies. He decides with the help of Black Canary and Bart they can put Doomsday deep within the earth’s crust, splitting him into two. The plan doesn’t include Oliver since his confession of killing Lex.

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE to Air Season 6 in the Fall

UPDATE: Hold the phone.  The publicist just broke into the call to say that they don’t have a confirm date for Season 6 yet.  Fingers crossed.

As I’m writing this I’m on a conference call with SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE host Cat Deeley.  Cat just confirmed that Season 6 of SYTYCD will indeed air in the Fall, soon after the Season 5 finale. I couldn’t be more excited!

She also told us taht SYTYCD Boston auditions will be held on May 28th.  You know Dan and I will be all over that trying to get some scoop.

PARKS & RECREATION Season Finale: Rock Show

After a pilot episode that earned justifiably mixed reviews, I have been riding a wave of enthusiasm for Parks & Recreation. Limited to only six chapters in its mini-season, I was impressed with the creative team’s focus on shaping meaningful storylines for each of its main characters and establishing a consistent comedic tone within the halls of city government. With Amy Poehler as our tour guide, viewers were becoming familiar with the local flavor of Pawnee, Indiana and the inefficient cast of characters who are entrusted with its care.

With so much momentum to build on, I was disappointed by a P&R finale that forgot the funny and indulged in melodrama. From a hasty twist in the “raggedy” Ann and Andy romance to a disastrous scene at the Pit between Leslie and Mark, the Pawnee crew felt more like a soap opera than a sitcom, and curbed my enthusiasm for its place on NBC’s fall lineup. Greg Daniels and Michael Schur are more than capable of plotting a season filled with moments that made episodes 2-5 so enjoyable, but the finale did raise some red flags about the pitfalls they need to avoid.

Chris Pratt has been a hilarious guest star in P&R’s initial run, and a worthy addition to the cast moving forward. Though his onscreen dynamic with Rashida Jones has never been magical, I was under the impression that the Ann/Andy breakup would be a slow process. During the “Boys’ Club” episode, Andy invested a lot of time and energy to clean both their house and himself. At the time, I assumed the writers wanted us to recognize Andy’s genuine feelings, and to ignore his various shortcomings. Following Andy’s confession that he delayed the removal of his casts, this love story is over. Despite a temporary victory for the aspiring rock star, reclaiming the couch while Ann tended to a fallen friend in the Pit, I am concerned that Andy might not be a permanent resident of Pawnee in Season Two.

SUPERNATURAL Season Finale: Lucifer Rising

May 15, 2009 by

A standing O to Nicole for sharing with us her thoughts on SUPERNATURAL every week.  I know it’s a special show to so many people and I’m personally excited to (finally) get caught up this summer.  Thank you to Nicole and to all you SPN fans for such great conversations this season.  I can’t until next year so I can jump in on the discussions!

Wow you guys. Just….wow. When I heard the opening notes of “Carry on My Wayward Son” (aka the Supernatural Theme) by Kansas, I had chills. You know how fans of SPN are always saying “In Kripke We Trust”? Well, there is a reason for that my friends. He was at the helm of this episode from its inception in the writing room to the direction and he did a hell of a job. I was shocked, I laughed, I welled up, I was angry, I was heartbroken, I was elated, and I was left perched right on the very edge of my seat. Not bad for an hour of television. I am constantly amazed at the ways that Kripke & Co. can weave threads of the story together in ways that I never imagined would work, but they do and it’s always so satisfying. This is not to say that I was left without questions, because I do have some. I will get to those in a bit and I’m really hoping that my fellow SPN peeps can help me out with some answers!

First off, I officially apologize for any even slightly encouraging things I said about Ruby in last week’s review. I believe it was something along the lines of “she’s helped them out a LOT”, or something to that effect. Well, well, well, how the tables have turned since last week. Little Miss Ruby was not only NOT helping them, she was working with Big Daddy himself to lead Sam and Dean down the path that would let him out of his cage by breaking the final seal. I’m not going to lie…I thought that maybe Ruby would have ulterior motives and I’d end up eating my words about her, but I had no idea how much I would hate her by the end of season four. Let us count the ways in which Ruby displayed her wicked, wicked ways last night, shall we?

  • When she and Sam had the demon baby-stealer tied up and Sam had tortured her into sharing where Lillith was, Ruby wanted to keep her around on their road trip to the convent so Sam could feed off of her blood. The demon arranged for the innocent woman still trapped in the body to “take over” to make the feeding much more difficult for Sam to do. Ruby still insisted they throw her in the trunk, screaming and pleading, and taking her with them. Yes, Sam agreed, but at least he was displaying some serious reservations and objections to the whole deal
  • Ruby could see that the voicemail he had from Dean was weighing on Sam’s mind and she kept encouraging him to check it already. When he finally did, the message was nothing like the one that Dean had actually left. In fact, Dean called Sam a monster again, and insinuated that he would kill him if he had to. As the pain registered on Sam’s face, the camera cut to Ruby, smirking because she knew that Sam was now going to go along with her plan. When I realized that she had changed the message, I hated her instantly and felt sick to my stomach.

30 ROCK Season Finale: Kidney Now!

Last night was not only the season finale of 30 ROCK, but it was also the last recap by the wonderful Kari.  Kari, thanks so much for reviewing this season of 30 ROCK.  We are all so grateful.  We’re going to miss your weekly reviews next season but we hope you’ll stop by and comment every once in a while.  Thanks again!

——-

It’s the end of the line, folks, both for Season 3 and me. And while I stand by my earlier assertion, stated somewhere, that a string of hilarious one-liners alone do not a solid episode make, I laughed enough during “Kidney Now!” to mostly overlook what fell flat. (Although the bloated musical ending fell pretty flat, compared not only to previous season finales but also the great “Midnight Train to Georgia” number that capped “Episode 210.” I mean, why not let Kenneth interact with cousin Clay Aiken, or at least punch him in the nose? But I do like how Tina Fey & crew took all those “too many special guest stars!” complaints from critics and fans and cranked up the dial to 1000 in response. That’s just the kind of thumb in your eye I appreciate as one of the complainers.)

First, though, kudos to Alan Alda for playing off his own “earnest, decent liberal” label so effortlessly. Watching him enjoy a simple game of catch with Alec Baldwin might have been the highlight for me, as well as the smile on Jack’s face at the end when he realizes that for some reason this guy Milton accepts and loves him for who he is, and not what he can give.

Slammer Time for PRISON BREAK Tonight

prison-break

Another day. Another finale. But this time around we are saying goodbye to PRISON BREAK…for good. I was a PRISON BREAK fan from the beginning. Never missed an episode. But all that changed when the networks decided to put a myriad of great shows up against each other on Monday night. PRISON BREAK was my sacrifice. It wasn’t easy, but it had to be done. I had grand visions of keeping up with the show online, but it never happened. But I haven’t given up complete hope yet. I’ve managed to avoid spoilers completely as I have every intention on finishing the series this summer. I’ve had tonight’s season finale in hand but I didn’t dare watch it. I selfishly didn’t want to ruin it for myself.

But tonight Fox officially says goodbye to Michael and his band of Merry Men. It has waned over the years but thinking back, the first season of PRISON BREAK was as engaging and exciting as TV gets. Who could forget that moment when Michael Scofield lifted up his shirt to reveal the blueprints of the jail finely embedded in every tattoo? And all those times he was on the verge of being caught with only seconds to spare? So exhilarating. The cliffhanger style of each episode left me always wanting more.

BONES Season Finale: The End of the Beginning

I know you all have lots to discuss tonight, and I don’t want to hold you up, but please allow me to interrupt for just a minute to thank Seeleybaby for all hard work in bringing BONES to GiveMeMyRemote.com this year. She’s helped to create and cultivate such a wonderful community of BONES fans. So thanks to Seelebaby and thanks to all of you. Now over to our esteemed BONES authority and her take on tonight’s season finale.

—–

SO many questions left unanswered! And since the finale episode (where I don’t think the word ‘Bones’ was mentioned even once) wasn’t quite like a normal one, it’s almost impossible for me to do a normal review. I am sure you all have MUCH to say, and I want to hear it! But my first question is this. Was it Booth’s dream? Was it Brennan’s story she was writing? And if so, then why is Hodgins narrating it?

The Case:

There was one, sort of, but instead, let’s discuss this ‘case’: Millions of loyal fans all over the world tune in to a beloved show hoping to see some genuine (read : not a cheat) “laws of physics breaking” between the two main characters, only to be taken on somewhat of a whirlwind tour of alternate reality ending in one of our heroes in an amnesic state while the other is stunned. Will these viewers come back for more, or will they take their love, loyalty or just plain indifference elsewhere? Suspects include the networks, the show’s writers and creators, and in this writer’s case, a slightly overdeveloped sense of entitled ‘ownership’. What say you?

The Squints, etc:

It seemed almost EVERYONE was back tonight, so I wanted to share a bit of love for each. In alphabetical order:
