Project Supernatural Update – Season 1, Half Way Point

June 17, 2009 by

After Twittering about it last night, I got quite a few emails and Tweets asking me how PROJECT SUPERNATURAL is coming along. I thought it might be best to send out the occasional update on how my quest to watch all of SUPERNATURAL before the September season premiere is going.

Well, what I can tell you is this –  SUPERNATURAL is stressing me out. I don’t do well with all the ghosts and spirits and what not. I mean, at least on BUFFY the demons could sing and dance. I’m watching half these episodes with the volume down and/or my hands over my eyes. I can deal with the blood and gore of it all, that’s not a problem, but the spirits that jump out at Sam and Dean on a regular basis? Oy vey.

I’m 11 episodes into the first season with 11 more to go. Over the past two days I’ve watched the following episodes:

  • “Bugs” – Someone once told me that if I needed to speed things along I could skip most of the first season.  I don’t want to do that, but I did keep that in mind as I fast forward through most of this episode.  Sorry, but the two biggest things that freak me out are ghosts and bugs.  I just couldn’t do it.
  • Home” – Great episode. The kid ending up in the refrigerator freaked me the frak out!  And what’s with the woman continuing to sleep in the house despite all the creepiness?  Even when the demons were released (or supposedly released), she just sauntered off to bed without a care in the world. What?! I’d be grabbing those kids and running for the hills.Loretta Devine as Missouri Mosely was fantastic.  I hope we see more of her in the future (wait – don’t tell me). I wasn’t expecting to see Papa Winchester this early into S1. That was a fun surprise.
  • “Asylum” – Talk about romantic.  Going into an abandoned asylum at night.  Swoon.  Idiots! Lots of hiding behind my hands on this one.  So much jumping out…why do spirits always go for the element of surprise?  It’s not good for my old ticker. Poor Sam got possessed.  Something tells me this won’t be the first time.
  • “Scarecrow” – Now this is an episode I can take. Freaky but not too scary. I thought the premise about the scarecrow god (or whatever he was) was interesting.  But so glad when the aunt and uncle took the hook.  I was expecting Dean to hook up (no pun intended) with the girl he was locked up with. I know these boys are focused on their work, but they’re just too pretty not to be wooing the ladies more.

So far so good.  If I could just watch Sam and Dean bantering I think I’d be better off – a lot less scary. I can’t say I’m at the point where I’m enjoying what I’m watching yet, but I’m sure there will be a point soon where I build up my tolerance to ghosts and other non-pleasant things jumping out of the shadows.

The writing is terrific and the backstory is intriguing.  I can already see why it’s a fan favorite.  Now if I can just stop being a baby.

And I have to ask…Sam and Dean are traveling the country chasing demons.  How are they making any money?!

    YEAH YEAH YEAH!!!!!!!!!

You know how happy this makes me.

I’m shocked you didn’t find “Scarecrow” to be the scariest. It’s my favorite SPN episode from Season 1 and possibly from the entire series.

SOOO excited that you’re undertaking to watch all four seasons by September!!! That’s a lot my friend – good for you. I agree with Ducky – I loved Scarecrow and did find it to be pretty freaky, so I’m surprised you were okay with it.

As to your question about how they’re making money? They’re not. You’ll see more about this as the show progresses. Do be sure to check out the bloopers for each season – all of them are hilarious!

I’m so jealous that the show is new for you! I caught up on seasons one and two in a similar way, and was hooked from then on.

Yippee! I loved Scarecrow. There are only a few episodes that really creep my out. But I am not going to warn you. I really think as they start dealing more with demons and not so much ghosts and such, you will probably be more ok.

You watch Supernatural. I will watch Greek!

This is my first time commenting here, but since I’m currently rewatching Season 1 of Supernatural (I’ve been a die hard fan for awhile), I just had to comment.

First of all, I’m a big time scaredy cat, so I understand the scary concerns. The first episode is still the scariest for me, I couldn’t believe my friend made me sit through it the first time. But it gets better and it’s always entertaining.

Secondly, keep at it, Supernatural is one of the best television shows out there. It’s really the only show that consistently does a good balance between the CSI-type episodic feel while also keeping up with story arcs and character development. Plus it doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s straight forward entertainment. The fact that its two main stars are drop dead gorgeous doesn’t hurt either of course.

    So keep watching. Winchesters FTW!

I’ve always thought season 1 was by far the scariest (my first time through, I watched a lot behind my hands, too!) Subsequent seasons are a bit easier to take for the easily-scared among us.

Scarecrow is one of my favorites still.

    So proud of you girl!!!!!

Watching “Faith” – I can’t tell if it’s just not as scary or I’m doing better because it’s still light outside.

I just got into Supernatural this year… picked up Season 1 after Christmas and the rest is history. Like you, GMMR, I watched a lot of it during the light hours…. it didn’t seem as scary then. 🙂 But as the seasons went on I found if I focused on the Dean/Sam moments it made it easier to watch it at night… the scary didn’t seem as scary!

So glad that you’re enjoying yourself despite the scares. The story and characters only become more compelling and complex as time goes on. Keep going, I guranteen the Brothers Winchester are worth it!
