Tonight’s TV Spotlight…Tuesday, June 23, 2009

Well lookey here.  We have quite a few shows with new episodes airing tonight. It’s going to be a big night for Bravo with the Housewives Reunion and the Gossip Girl reality show.  But I’m all about the return of BETTER OFF TED.  A great show that I hope you’ll tune in to.  Let’s give the scripted shows some love during these summer months, ok?

Be sure to drink plenty of coffee (or at least set the DVR) because Jim Parsons from THE BIG BANG THEORY is on with Craig Ferguson tonight.  Sheldon FTW!

Here are just a few shows on tonight.  I’m sure there are others you’ll be watching…share them with the class!

The Superstars | 8pm on NBC | Series Premiere
The competition begins in a sports elimination tournament pairing eight celebrities with pro athletes. In the opener, the teams participate in a bicycle race but are given only one bike, and the pairs take part in a kayak relay race. One team is eliminated.

The Real Housewives of New Jersey Reunion | 9pm on Bravo
“Watch What Happens, Part I”
The ladies sit down for a first-season wrap-up with host Andy Cohen. [GMMR: Being very pregnant, I don’t think Therese is going to be flipping any tables tonight, but I do know that all these ladies will be flipping their mouths off.  I can’t wait!]

America’s Got Talent | 9pm on NBC | Season Premiere
The talent show’s fourth season opens with preliminary auditions taped in theaters across the country. Nick Cannon is the new host, replacing Jerry Springer. David Hasselhoff, Sharon Osbourne and Piers Morgan return as the judges. [GMMR: After the Susan Boyla fiasco, expect the ratings to be off the charts…well off the charts for NBC.]

Mental | 9pm on Fox
“Roles of Engagement”
A movie star is brought into the psych ward after suffering a psychotic breakdown on national television; Veronica and Nora have a girls’ night out.

Better Off Ted | 9:30pm on ABC
“You Are the Boss of Me”
When Ted feels like socializing, he visits Lem and Phil’s medieval fight club in Veridian’s basement, where his presence makes the attendees uncomfortable. Elsewhere, Linda reaches out to Veronica. The King: Benjamin King. [GMMR: If you missed out on this show during the regular season, make an appointment to tune in tonight. It’s smart, hilarious and well worth your time.]

NYC Prep | 10pm on Bravo | Series Premiere
“Top Half of One Percent”
Prep-school seniors Jessie and PC hit New York’s most exclusive spots; Camille is obsessed with getting into Harvard; Kelli falls for the charms of playboy Sebastian. [GMMR: It’s GOSSIP GIRL come to life. I’m scared for the future of this country…and that’s only based on the promos I’ve seen.]

Rescue Me | 10pm on FX
“Disease”
Lou and Tommy vie to be the last single man standing; Garrity looks worse than the guys expected, and they have no idea how far from reality Garrity has drifted.

On the late night couch…

  • The Late Show with David Letterman: Sandra Day O’Connor, MSTRKRFT with John Legend
  • The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien:  Lisa Kudrow, Billy Mays & Anthony Sullivan, Elvis Costello

Will You MAKE IT OR BREAK IT?

June 23, 2009 by

ABC Family keeps me on my toes. After initially skipping out on the network’s hit show, GREEK, out of fear that it would be typical ABC Family goody two-shows television, I now feel the need to watch every new show the network airs.  What if one of their new shows is the next GREEK and I miss out?

After watching the premiere of MAKE IT OR BREAK IT last night, I can safely say this show is no GREEK.  It’s more what you would expect from an ABC Family drama, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing – if you’re in the right demo; which I don’t think I am.

The show centers around the lives of four aspiring Olympic gymnasts who are training together in a gym known as The Rock – a premiere training facility led by coach Marty Walsh (Erik Palladino).

Payson Keeler is the team’s best hope for gold. She’s focused on winning, but luckily she has seemingly stable parents, played by Peri Gilpin (“Fraiser”) and Brett Cullen (“Lost”) to help keep her somewhat grounded.

On the opposite side of the parental spectrum is Steve Tanner, a father who will do just about anything to make sure his already spoiled daughter, Lauren, gets anything she wants – even if she doesn’t deserve it.  In the pilot the shenanigans of the Tanner’s not only come close to killing another gymnast, but also aim to destroy the Olympic dreams of all the girls in training.  Quite a pair those two. Oh and it’s worth mentioning that Steve’s executive assistant (also his secret girlfriend), Summer, is played by none other than Candace Cameron Bure. It’s nice to see the former “Full House” star back on TV. Little DJ has aged well – she looked great.  And I don’t mean to rush the relationship between Steve and Summer, but if they do get married Summer’s last name would be Tanner. Candace could be a Tanner again.  I refuse to believe that’s a coincidence.

Jon & Kate…Done & Done

June 22, 2009 by
Filed under #1 featured, Jon & Kate Plus 8, TV News

And that was that.  After ten years of marriage, Jon and Kate Gosselin have opted for a divorce.  And staying true to the famewhores that they both are, they waited until the afternoon of their big show to actually file the papers. Classy.

If you were one of the millions who watched tonight, then you probably felt at least a little sad.  Not necessarily for Jon or Kate, but for their 8 kids who have to see this play out in such a way.  Maybe the little ones can be spared for some time, but for the twins – Cara and Mady – there’s no escaping this.  All I could think about was how these two little girls had to go to school tomorrow knowing that their friends had most likely watched tonight’s episode.  How tragic.  Here’s to hoping that in addition to ponying up the money for the crooked houses TLC also ponied up for some therapy for these children.

Kate claimed that the show didn’t cause the divorce.  She thinks that they would have ended up here regardless.  That’s probably true, but they’ll never know.

The season four finale ended just as the tabloid nonsense was heating up.  Jon was clearly over the show.  He wanted it to end.  Kate did not.  He hated the attention.  She loved it.  It was right there and then you knew they were never going to last.  There was no discussion.  There was no compromise.  The same as the pattern we’ve seen since the sextuplets were babies.

The good news is that despite their parents separation, the kids won’t be shuffled around between their homes.  They will remain in the house and stay with whatever parent has them for that period of time. Well until at least Kate gets remarried, which you know is right around the corner. Ha!

TRUE BLOOD: Keep This Party Going

June 22, 2009 by
Filed under #1 featured, Posts by Philboy, True Blood

Hello, fellow Fanger Fanatics out there! Philboy here to take on my third series for GMMR, “True Blood”. Before I get started on the jam-packed second episode of season two, let me give my thanks to Kath for taking reviewing duties last week as I was delving deep into Nashville, Tennessee and its CMA Music Festival.

I did want to mention before I started my tenure as “True Blood” analyst by saying that I have not read the books and will not until the series is over, which I hope does not occur for a long time. The show and all of its storylines will not be weighed against anything else but the content itself. I would welcome all of the debates, though, in the comments and will try to respond and increase the dialogue as much as I can.

Sookie, Bill & Jessica

I love the character of Jessica. I know that this is a divisive topic within the fan community. After Sookie and Bill decide to make up and try to turn over a new leaf, Sookie tells Bill to try to be a little gentler with Jessica because, in the end, she’s still a teenager (with a wicked accurate Bill impression, I might add). After seeing her parents on TV, Jessica tells Sookie that she realizes how much she loved them and misses them and wants to just be near them again. Sookie, who recognizes loss and is also a bit of a sap at times, takes her. But sweet Jessica reveals herself as a vamp when her abusive father comes home and starts berating her. Was Jessica genuinely missing her family or was this a ploy for her to get back at her domineering, home-schooling family? Bill shows up at the end of the episode to clean up the mess, getting angry with Sookie in the process.

Let me also go on record saying I am very pro-Bill. Eric is an interesting character, but I really love how human and somewhat altruistic Bill can be. Therefore, seeing him glamour a child was incredibly unsettling. The deeper we get into the politics of the vampire world, the more drawn in I become. The reason Bill had to show up is that both Sookie and Jessica are technically his, aren’t they? It’s a fascinating way to leave things for next week.

Sam and Maryann

Maryann shows up to the restaurant, eats all day and makes everyone all frisky. Then, when Sam confronts her, she gets all shaky and does his shape-shifting for him – turning him into a dog. She threatens that she can make it happen at any time, so Sam better be a little nicer to her.

Not ready to go to work this morning, that much I can tell you.  But alas I must.  Let’s at least talk about what’s on TV tonight before I head into the office and start my non-TV related workday, ok?

Jon & Kate Plus 8 | 9pm on TLC
“House & Big Changes”
After much discussion, Jon and Kate are ready to make an announcement about the future; changes at the Gosselin home include new playhouses for the children. [GMMR: This really can’t be anything but an announcement of a separation, right?  Or do you think maybe they devoted an hour to talk about Jon’s new ear piercings? Nothing like using your personal life to drum up those ratings again. And by that I mean, I’ll be watching.]

Raising the Bar | 10pm on TNT
“The Curious Case of Kellerman’s Button”

TOP CHEF MASTERS Recap: Episode 2

June 19, 2009 by
Filed under #1 featured, Posts by SB, Top Chef, Top Chef Masters

I think the most jarring thing to me about this episode was how completely different it was from the first one. It’s weird because you don’t realize during an entire season of regular Top Chef how used to everyone you get, to their dynamic and reactions and so forth. In the first episode, everyone was lighthearted and having a great time. This one was much more subdued and intense.

I think the most familiar face to most of us was Wylie Dufresne, who’s a regular judge on Top Chef. Like Hubert, I was completely cracked up by how totally different his competition persona was from his judging persona, but in a totally opposite way. He seems so mellow, so quiet and sweet when he judges, but he is an INTENSE competitor and knows how to drop a serious F-bomb (or fifty). I was so entertained.

The other judge I knew of ahead of time was Elizabeth Falkner, and I know she’s judged on TC before, but I actually am more familiar with her from the Food Network Challenges, and I am not predisposed to liking her. On FNC, she’s always “artistic” and then freaks out when people don’t “get it” and she doesn’t win. To me it’s like, it’s a competition and you know who you have to please, so if you want to win, make them happy and shut up. So I was kind of expecting that from her on Top Chef. She was much, much more tolerable than I anticipated, and I loved her whipping up chocolate chip cookies while they were waiting on the judges, and she was much more gracious than I had anticipated.

Sorry for the late posting of the spotlight.  I dorked out this morning and went to the Apple Store at the crack of dawn to the get the iPhone 3GS.  One hour in line and I was good to go.  Not too bad considering the 6 hours I waited last year.  Such a geek at heart.

It’s Friday. It’s the summer (although you would never know it if you are living in Boston). There’s not going to be a lot of great TV on tonight.  It’s just the way it goes.  I have tickets to the Sox game, but if I opt not to go (depending on the rain), it’s going to be a SUPERNATURAL marathon for me (see below).

Here’s a few shows you might want to check out tonight..then again, you might be better off watching TV on DVD. May I suggest GREEK?

Surviving Suburbia | 8pm on ABC
“Dirty Stevie”
Onno gives Steve a gun, and while Steve enjoys the feeling of power it gives him, Anne wants it out of the house; Monica sends Anne a bill for the food Henry has been eating while at her house.

The Goode Family | 8:30pm on ABC
“A Tale of Two Lesbians”
Gerald and Helen befriend a lesbian couple to impress the arts council, but it goes for naught when Gerald makes an inadvertent antigay slur.

The Soup | 10pm on E!
“The Week in Review”
A weekly recap of various pop culture and television show moments of the week. The show is hosted by Joel McHale, who provides sarcastic and biting commentary on the various clips.

Also Playing…

  • The Chopping Block | 8pm on NBC: The remaining teams must prepare a dish using aphrodisiac ingredients; a famous sommelier tells the winning team how to pair wine with food.
  • Don’t Forget the Lyrics | 8pm on Fox: A woman from Boston competes in hopes of winning money to send her hard-working parents on vacation.

On the late night couch…

  • The Late Show with David Letterman: Jada Pinkett Smith, Michael Cera, the Sounds
  • The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien: Shia LaBeouf, Phil Jackson, Holly Williams
  • The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson: Bryan Cranston, Christopher Mintz-Plasse
  • Jimmy Kimmel Live: Kobe Bryant, Derek Fisher
  • Late Night with Jimmy Fallon: Jeff Goldblum, Mike Birbiglia, Tamra Davis
  • Chelsea Lately: Nia Vardalos, Guy Branum, Arden Myrin, Chris Hardwick (R 6/11/09)
  • Last Call with Carson Daly: Kathy Griffin, the Ting Tings

Project Supernatural
It’s my goal to be completely caught up with SUPERNATURAL by the time it returns to the air in the Fall. It’s going to be tough, but I’ll try. I have no doubt that I will love this show as much as others if I just give it a shot. But I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t freak me out a little. I’m a big baby. I love don’t like scary stuff.

Tonight’s I’ll be taking on three new episodes (unless I end up at the Red Sox game)

Route 666 | Season 1, Episode 13
Dean gets contacted by his first love, an African American woman, about racist murders that occur on a desert route, caused by a truck that seems driver-less

Nightmare | Season 1, Episode 14
Sam’s precognitive dream leads the brothers to investigate a mysterious death which seems connected to a boy with the power of telekinesis.

The Benders | Season 1, Episode 15
Dean searches for Sam when he is kidnapped by a backwoods family who likes to hunt humans and use their body parts as trophies.

Surviving Suburbia | 8pm on ABC

For one guy and one girl, there SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE experience is almost over.  But who will it be going home.If you want to know who went home on June 25, 2009, click here: Who Went Home on SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE?

Welcome to SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE.

Tonight I’ll be live blogging the results show.  If you’re watching, use the comment below to share your thoughts on the couples dancing for their lives.  Will your favorites live to dance another day?

Tonight’s opening number was choreographed by the fabulous Mia Michaels.  It didn’t do much for me if I’m being honest.  It was lacking that “wow” factor.  Everyone was really dancing on their own and there didn’t seem to be any cohesiveness.  I’m sure it was loved by many.  That’s ok.

9:06pm: There’s no kidding around tonight.  Cat gets right to the fate of the first three dance groups.

  • Ade & Melissa – SAFE
  • Jason & Caitlin – Bottom Three
  • Philip & Jeanine – SAFE

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE Top 18 Performances

A few things are a guarantee tonight. Cat Deeley is going to look smokin’ hot and we are going to see some incredible talent. Sounds good to me. I’m in!

Tonight the top 9 guys and the top 9 girls take the stage to wow us with their dance skills. They’re going to be working with some of the top choreographers in the world. It won’t be easy, but here’s to hoping it’s pretty.

Joining Nigel and Mary at the judges’ table tonight is Lil C.

It’s just their second week in the competition and already the dancers are telling secrets about their partners. Hopefully nothing too revealing…I guess we’ll see.

Randi & Evan | Jive | by Louis Van Amstel
1-888-Tempo-01

Will my favorite couple of last week win my heart again? I’ve got Evan going all the way in my SYTYCD fantasy league. Fingers crossed.  But before I get to the performance, can I just say how much I think Randi looks like Kellie Pickler? Weird. Ok, as for the dance. Well, these two didn’t wow me as much as they did last week, but at least I didn’t hate it.  I’m not going to pretend to know what makes a good Jive, but I couldn’t help think that it should be lighter than it looked.  I especially felt like Randi was stuck in cement and very heavy on her feet.  Evan jumping over a standing Randi was pretty impressive. Overall, it was just ok for me (oh no, I’m Randy Jackson already.) Twenty bucks says the judges tell Randi she was so light on her feet. He he!

The Judges: Lil’ C said it was a solid beginning to the show. The judges were being obnoxious with the whole “fun” counter. Move on.. Mary thought it fell a little short, but she said Randi was the stronger of the two. Nigel finally acknowledged Louis van Amstel. (Clearly @dizzyfeet has been reading my tweets). Nigel thinks the two are a great couple and are tremendous, but he too thought Randi was the stronger of the two tonight.

Melissa & Ade | Jazz | by Sonya Tayeh
1-888-Tempo-02

The first Sonya routine of the season. I’m so excited. If I were cooler I wouldn’t be telling you that I often dance around my apartment to “The Garden” from last season. Good thing I’m not cool. I’m not sure if I’ll be dancing around the house with this Sonya routine…there’s no way I could. As always, so visually interesting.  Not one moment of predictability. I can’t say I saw the story between the two dancers though. I’m not sure if Melissa was as dirty as Sonya needed her to be but overall I thought their movement was fantastic. When they were doing specific moves together it was crazy good. I’m not sure this dance will get a DVR rewind from me, but I certainly enjoyed it.

The Judges: Ok, Cat doing a three-way chest bump with the dancers was awesome!  Lil C threw out his first “bucc” of the competition. He said Ade could be everyone’s competition. He loved his “manipulation of movement”. Mary loved it. She complimented them on the details. Nigel thought it was fantastic.  He applauded the dancers and Sonya. Overall, well done!

Caitlin & Jason | Hip Hop | by Shane Sparks
1-888-Tempo-03

Shane Sparks is back! Thank goodness, y’alls. Ta ta ta ta. Maybe it’s because he’s one of my faves, but I couldn’t take my eyes of Jason tonight.  As gorgeous as she is I really only noticed Caitlin during her solo- which I thought was good.  Jason seemed so much smoother in his movements. I’m not sure I loved the choreography as much as I normally do with a Shane routine. They certainly didn’t dance it poorly, it was good.  But I wasn’t off my seat.

The Judges: Lil C didn’t love it. He thought the dance came off a little corny. Mary saw two completely different dancers on stage tonight. She didn’t see any of the chemistry she saw last week during their performance. Nigel thought they looked really good up there. So a little all over the place with the judges.

Is T.R. Knight Leaving GREY’S ANATOMY?

June 17, 2009 by
Filed under Grey's Anatomy, TV News

WARNING: SPOILER ALERT!!

In one of the most shocking moments in GREY’S ANATOMY history, Meredith discovered that the John Doe hanging on for dear life after being hit by a bus was actually George O’Malley.  The final scene left viewers unsure of the fate of George as well as Izzie (Katherine Heigl), who also toyed with death in the episode.

Helping to spur on the speculation was the off-screen drama that surrounded T.R. Knight and Katherine Heigl’s relationship with the show.  Both had been rumored to be unhappy. Sources say that T.R. Knight went as far as requesting that he be let out of his three year contract early. But was that true or was the media just running rampant based on rumors? Officially neither Knight nor showrunner Shonda Rhimes have commented on the speculation.
