Cat Deeley - So You Think You Can Dance

I’m not going to let something like a lack of a computer stop me from talking about who went home on tonight’s SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE. Blogging from my iPhone might not be ideal, but I think it’s indicative of my love for SYTYCD. Tonight’s recap might be a little more truncated than usual, but it will cover the basics – namely who danced their last dance.

If you haven’t yet listened to our Top 14 performance podcast, head over to TheTVTalkPodcast.com site to listen in. You can also find us on iTunes by searching: “TV Talk Podcast”.

I’m sure the opening number was beautiful. It certainly was joyous and explosive. But for me the horrendous camera work completely ruined it for me. I don’t remember another time when the camera work was so distracting. Had I been properly warned I could have taken some Dramamine.

Getting right down to business, Cat brings the first two couples on to the stage.

  • Karla & Vitolio – Bottom Three
  • Randi & Evan – SAFE

One couple is already in the bottom three, who will be joining them?

  • Janette & Brandon – SAFE
  • Kayla & Kupono -Bottom Three
  • Melissa & Ade – SAFE

What?! Are you kidding me? I thought the “Twilight” dance was one of the highlights of the season thus far. Well, barring a major meltdown, the judges aren’t going to send Kayla or Kupono home tonight, so I see it as a bonus performance from them this week.

With only two couples left, one will soon be joining Kayla & Kupono and Karla & Vitolio in the bottom three. But who will it be?

  • Jeanine & Philip – Bottom Three
  • Caitlin & Jason – SAFE

Hmm. This is going to be interesting. Philip is obviously going to have an amazing solo. So that doesn’t look good for Vitolio. Personally I don’t think Vitolio should go home based just on Philip’s wavey arms, but I think that’s exactly what’s going to happen. Vitolio has been in the bottom three most weeks so far, so that doesn’t help his cause at all.

As for the girls, it’s really going to come down to the solos of Karla and Jeanine. Kayla has nothing to worry about.

Before we get to the special performances tonight, I need to mention Cat’s sex hair. Was that by design or did her stylist not make it to the stage in time for a touch-up?

Now that’s a pas de deux…
Desmond Richardson and Patrica Hachey took the stage to perform a pas de deux. It was strong and beautiful and demanded your attention. Gorgeous! Did you see how long Patrica stayed on her pointed toes? That has to hurt? And I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a body like Mr. Richardson’s. My goodness. I’m going to be keeping this episode saved for quite some time. That performance is worth watching over and over again. Bravo!

As good as these contestants are, they look so amateurish after watching that performance. I guess it’s good to show them all how far they have to go in their pursuit of dance.

Dance for your Life…
First up with her solo is Karla. Her dance was interesting and she showed some versatility but she was dead in the face. She showed no personality at all until the very end. Next up, her partner Vitolio. We’ve seen him in solo mode many times and I’ve yet to be disappointed, but he’s failed to ever impress the judges.

The next pair on stage are Kayla and Kupono. While not as interesting as Karla’s solo, Kayla showed amazing strength. She gets to stay. As for Kupono, he’s safe too after that quirky performance. I’m not sure it would have been enough to keep him in other weeks, but I think it was enough for tonight.

The final couple dancing for their lives are Jeanine and Philip. Personally, based on the solo performed, I don’t think Jeanine should stay over Karla. Karla was more interesting. As for Philip – he was fantastic! I know I’ve been really hard on him, but I’ve never questioned his talent when it came to doing that thing that is uniquely his. And tonight he brought it in a big way!

So as we go into the commercial break, I’m thinking we are going to say goodbye to Vitolio and Jeanine. But I’m still not sure if they will want to break up yet another couple. I’m really not sure.

Oh oh I Do Not Hook Up Up…
I’ll be honest, this is usually the part in the show when I hit the fast forward button. I’m not usually a fan of the music act filler. But it’s not every week we get Ms. Kelly Clarkson. Love her! And it’s nice that she’s singing live. IDOL has trained her well…that, and she can actually sing.

We Bid You Adieu…
The judges had a decision to make and that decision is final.  The guy and girl going home tonight are…

Karla and Vitolio

Did the right twosome go home tonight?  I think so, but that’s just me.  Talk to me SYTYCD lovers!

I thought the right people were sent home for sure. I thought that Jeanine’s solo was by far the best, though!

  2. Patty on July 2nd, 2009 10:36 pm

I don’t know anything about dance, but it still floors me that the couples with the weird routines make it through… Aliens? Crash test dummies? They do not entertain me!

  3. Patty on July 2nd, 2009 10:38 pm

    I <3 Philip!

The judges really saw something in Jeanine that I missed tonight. Good for her for making it through. Based on the solo I would have kept Karla, but based on the entire body of work thus far I would have kept Jeanine.

It was nice to see Caitlin get herself OUT of the bottom three couples this time … I really like her, even though the alien dance was a bit strange! I’m finding it harder and harder to pick my “least favourites”, since I think they’re all becoming special to me. But having said that, Karla and Vitolio were the two I figured (of the bottom 6) the judges would be willing to let go.

Sorry – double posting to add a HA HA about Cat’s sex hair. I totally thought that too! IMHO, Anna Friel rocks the sex hair like nobody’s business, but seriously – Cat was giving her a run for her money tonight!

I think Karla DEFINITELY needed to go home. Did anyone else notice how she pulled away from Vitolio? I hate that Vitolio had the unfortunate luck to be stuck with two character-less dancers. I wish I could have seen him dance with someone else.

  8. Melissa Krasinski on July 3rd, 2009 12:33 am

here’s my question, how in the hell did Kayla and Kupono get into the bottom three? That was a mistake by a mile. OMG! They were the best. That dance, well, I’ll remember it for the rest of the season as it was so beautifully choreographed & danced. ahh! i loved it.

karla and vitolio were the right two to go home, definitely. 🙂

thanks for this blog. in my area the show was preempted for ‘to be announced’ and not recorded. I think america and the judges got it right….buh bye K and V….
    sorry I missed Cat’s hair though 🙁

Thanks for posting the info about tonight’s show. I inadvertantly missed it and appreciate you putting it up and yes, I agree, the right ones went home!

  11. Janet on July 3rd, 2009 2:56 am

    Philip over Vitolio…not right!

  12. Lisa (aka lmr) on July 3rd, 2009 7:03 am

I’m going to say that it is a bit unfair how Vitolio & Karla were treated on performance night. They were the last couple to perform which is normally a good thing but it was after the unnecessarily long
Dizzy Feet promo and two commercial breaks (one before and one after Df). Then in a move that everyone knows was not luck of the draw, they got the kiss of death dance, Quickstep (hello, the one prima ballerina gets a pas de deux, random, NOT) IMO, they nailed it like no one has ever nailed it on this show. Jean Marc and France’s choreography was stellar and V&K lived up to it. I am sorry more to see V go than K. I think K has been looking defeated in the non-dance moments. I think Vitolio is one of the best men and I am very sorry to see him go. He may not be the tween idol that Kupono may be but he can dance rings around him and then some. They kept Kupono so that Kayla wouldn’t have to endure another new partner, period. They need to stop pimping her as it is backfiring.

  13. Michele on July 3rd, 2009 9:21 am

I thought Janine was better, too, but she wasn’t in my fantasy pool so I was hoping for her to go home! ;0)

  14. jenn on July 3rd, 2009 9:46 am

I was fine with the choices. Other than Vitolio’s background story, nothing really grabbed me about either of these dancers. This is not to say that they aren’t talented, very talented, but they just didn’t grab my attention like a few of the others. Bye bye.

  15. Daniel on July 3rd, 2009 12:10 pm

Did anyone else notice the slight audio change between the end of the opening performance and Cat’s introduction? Did they pre-record that performance?

  16. Amy on July 3rd, 2009 12:10 pm

I was SO disappointed that Kayla and Kupono were in the bottom three! Mia said their dance was “perfection.” How can you argue? I loved the princess dance to “Hot Like Wow, ” too. I would have liked to have seen Vitolio with another dancer, but maybe not at the expense of another guy going home.

By the way, as a SYTYCD newbie, who does the costuming for the performances? Is the final decision up to the dancers? It seems like they shouldn’t get hammered by the judges (Kaitlyn) for costuming if it is not their decision.

  17. Lisa on July 3rd, 2009 12:38 pm

So glad you mentioned the camera work during the opening number. Why is it that they won’t let you see the whole dance? Stop making us dizzy with zooming in on one dancer and using all the different angles. We want to see the WHOLE dance. We want to see the performance, it’s not a stupid music video. This has been a problem since season 1.

  18. Tess on July 6th, 2009 1:05 pm

I seriously need philip to go home, his dance style is great, fantastic to watch, but he cannot do anything else and it bugs me that better dancer, who although definitely wouldn’t win, dances better than philip, went home.
I wanted to see at least one more week of him without Auska.

karla was definitely the weakest of that bottom three, but i just want to see jeanine dance without philip bringing the performance down

Jeanine is one of my favorite dancers….she is beautiful and she has a great connection with her partner. I think she did an awesome job in the tango Week 2, but Phillip’s terrible dancing took all the comments away from her. I definitely thought her solo was the best. I love when the judges say exactly what I was thinking.

I’m surprised that there isn’t more love from you, Kath, for Brandon. He is full of personality and has such diversity! He’s not in the same league as Josh was last season, but he is so much fun! And I agree with Dan that Jeanette has really grown on me, even though I expected not to like her.

I think that people were voting for Caitlin and Jason and also Evan and Randi to keep them safe and assumed that Kopono and Kayla didn’t need the votes (which they didn’t). I’ve never voted, but those are the 2 couples I would have picked up the phone for (for that exact reason) even though they weren’t my top 3 necessarily.

Karla was always someone I forgot who she was and this week, with less couples, she really stood out for me in a negative way. Total personality issues. I didn’t notice much of her dancing except during the quickstep she was really leaning forward in an awkward way during their side-by-side steps (out of hold). But she doesn’t sell her routines in her face at all.

Phillip won’t get cut because the producers want him on the tour. I think by showing the montage of the dancers routines so far, it’s letting America know what they will be seeing on the tour if they keep certain dancers. Phillip has 3 good routines (2 hip hop and 1 broadway) that will be fun to watch on tour. Vitolio has zero that I’d buy a ticket to see. I think that is solely the criteria for their decision. When the judges are backstage “deciding”, they are probably just deciding the details of what Nigel will say to the dancers when he makes the cuts.

  20. Toast with JAM on July 6th, 2009 11:05 pm

Predictions for next week will be either:

Ade and Melissa–my pick to go home
    or
    Jason and Caitlin

Even if Jason and Caitlin get cut they may bring them on tour for Bollywood (I didn’t like it nearly as much as Josh/Katee, but it’s exciting nonetheless).
