TRUE BLOOD Season Finale: Beyond Here Lies Nothin’
September 15, 2009 by Philboy
My apologies to Philboy and TRUE BLOOD fans. With all my traveling yesterday, I wasn’t able to post Philboy’s take on the TRUE BLOOD finale until now. I actually just got around to watching it myself, and WOW! Dan and I will be talking about it on the next podcast. But check out Phil’s take and share your thoughts in the comments below.
I went through the widest array of emotions in this episode. Boredom, happiness, sadness, interest, hilarity, unbridled joy and shock, all in the span of an hour. Let’s go through it and reflect on the season that was.
We open back up our cast of characters to learn that Maryann is starting to plan the wedding where she will offer her vessel, Sam, up to Dionysus and be reunited with him. Sookie, being not human and all, is forced to be the maid of honor. I loved the exchanges between Sookie and Maryann. Sookie had to ride a fine line, since she despised the woman for what she had done to her town, friends and home; but she also needed to find out more about what she IS, and Maryann held that information. As we saw at the end, we still aren’t quite sure, but…we’ll get to that in a bit.
The wedding is, honestly, cut and dried. There’s an effigy, and the ostrich egg, a symbol of purity, to complete it. Bill shows up with Sam and Sookie is all upset. Eggs kills Sam, upon Maryann’s request; Sookie starts to destroy everything, upon Sam’s request. Maryann chases Sookie and meets up with Dionysus, who is really Sam, who kills her. This changes everyone back to the way they were, not knowing why they’re all at some sort of wedding with a “statue of meat.” This, along with the finale, obviously, will be the jumping point for next season.
In the Queen’s palace, we find Eric playing Yahtzee, eager to find a solution to the Maryann problem. In the goings on, we find out that Eric sucks at Yahtzee (something that I didn’t even know was possible) and that the Queen has been supplying him with the vampire blood that he’s hiring people to sell. This could be the biggest wild card for next season, with the Queen taking on a bigger role in things, potentially.
I know we’re supposed to assume that Eric is the one that took Bill, but I just can’t see it. Maybe I like Eric too much to see it, and I know that he can be a bastard at times, but it’s not Eric’s style to take Bill in that situation, a situation that would hurt Sookie. So, unless Eric is a whole lot more sadistic than I thought, which I’m not ruling out, expect a switcheroo next season.
Jason and Andy win for funniest scenes of the season and for launching another storyline for next season. Hopefully, we will go round and round about whether or not Jason should have shot Eggs, since he had no way of knowing that there was a confessions and not a killing underway. How will Andy and Jason’s relationship change? Will Jason be a fugitive from the law? We will have to see.
And one word: Jessica. The prostitute? That was out of left field. I don’t even know what to say about it, other than I can’t imagine Bill will react well to that, whenever he hears about it. Speaking of which…
Now, for the ending. My heart jumped a little bit when Bill proposed. It was out of the blue, very heartfelt and quite adorable. It was also not lost on me that they were going to go to Vermont to get hitched. It was a bit of a rollercoaster there at the end, but I couldn’t blame Sookie for having a bit of hesitation. It’s been a long season, but it’s only been in the span of about a week for her, so a proposal was just a bit too much. And, sadly, we don’t know how it will end, as someone has taken Bill Compton.
This season had its ups and downs for me, but it ended on the highest of notes, with me falling in love with all of these characters again. A BIG THANKS to Kath for taking over this season when I couldn’t write up these reviews. Also, a BIG THANKS to all of you guys for reading and commenting and engaging in a conversation about this amazing show. And, a big thanks to my girlfriend for putting up with a show she doesn’t like every Sunday night.

I just caught the finale last night, and I have to say I enjoyed it. The pacing was a little random, I thought, with the Maryann story arc ending when it did. I mean, I know in first season the same thing happened, but this year it felt a little bit more awkward though.
I LOVED that they referenced that random chain scene from the pilot. I was just re-watching Season 1 with a friend of mine and it always struck me as weird how Sookie managed to do that. It’s always one of my favorite touches when a show lays random seeds throughout and then references them much, much later.
I thought Jessica was going to get staked by Hoyt’s momma, but clearly that was a mistake.
I reckon the queen is spreading Vampire blood around so that she can have an influence on a large array of people. We’ve already seen what ingesting the blood can do between Eric and Sookie, maybe she’s trying for the same thing on a much larger scale? I do want to know how someone becomes king or queen. Is there a vampire High King somewhere? I also think the queen probably had Bill kidnapped, but maybe it was the Fellowship of the sun. Who knows. The person was wearing gloves, so I would think that makes it likely it’s a vampire, but that could just be a coincidence.
I was worried they’d leave it with a cliffhanger I couldn’t stand waiting to see follow-through, but I think this is good. It’ll simmer with me through the fall and when it comes back, I’ll be very excited.
Hi! They had the tickets to vermont because earlier in this season or maybe it was last season, vermont became the first state to legalize inter-racial marriages between a vampire and a human. I liked the allegorical reference to a cultural struggler we’re currently going through with same sex marriages.
