About Last Night…SYTYCD, MODERN FAMILY, COUGAR TOWN and more…

October 1, 2009 by

Whew, Wednesday was one busy night of television.  I’d be lying if I said I watched all the shows I set out to.  Even waking up at 5am didn’t allow enough time to get everything in.  Thank goodness for my DVRs.

But let’s talk a little about last night’s TV.  We’ve already shared our thoughts on GLEE, our Wednesday night highlight, but what about the other shows that round out Wednesday.

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE saw a bit of a lift in ratings after Tueday night’s alleged Vajayjay-gate.  New Orleans had some serious talent.  The guy doing the New Orleans bounce was sickly talented.  The girl who just lost her grandpa had me grabbing for the tissues.  But it was too outstanding contemporary dancers that had me in awe.  Jonathan Litzler combined gracefulness and athleticism in his audition, while Jakob Karr left me wondering if we just saw the next to wear the crown of America’s Favorite Dancer.  (Probably doesn’t hurt that Jakob is BFF’s with S5 winner, Jeanine Mason). But neither one of them could rival The Shankman’s demonstration of Mary’s Rules (I need to find that video). And what about Mary Murphy last night? Was she stoned?

About 8.5 million or so people turned in to the series premiere of HANK, starring Kelsey Grammar, as well the premiere of THE MIDDLE starring Grammar’s former co-star, Patricia Heaton.  Were you one of those 8M? There’s clearly an audience for every show, and while I thought HANK was rather abysmal, I could maybe see the appeal of THE MIDDLE. Unfortunately neither show will end up on my DVR.  Wednesday is too busy as it is.  If you tuned in to either HANK or THE MIDDLE, tell us what you thought.

MODERN FAMILY might not have had a ‘Lion King’ moment this week, but it did have the Cameron dance, something I hope we see a lot more of in future episodes.  I hit the rewind button a few times on some of Phil’s talking heads.  I was laughing so hard the first time around that I missed some of his dialogue. I’m glad that people have really taken to MODERN FAMILY.  It’s nice to viewers turn out in a big way for such quality TV.

I’m enjoying COUGAR TOWN, much more than I thought I would.  I do wish someone would reign in Courtney Cox Arquette a bit.  She’s sometimes a wee bit too slapsticky for my taste (but then again should you really care about the opinion of someone that uses the word ‘slapsticky’?) Her character tries too hard and so does Courtney.  That being said, I thought the back story of Jules trying to relive the 20’s she never had was a nice back drop to all of her cougarlicious behavior (really, I need to stop making up words). COUGAR TOWN has a season pass for me.  You?

I’d like to say that I’m going to get to EASTWICK tonight, but with about a million other shows on, it’s just not going to be possible.  Saturday maybe?  If you tuned in, talk to me.  Are you giving EASTWICK a chance?  Is there promise there? Was Matt Dallas shirtless again?  These are the important questions that must be answered.

NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE.  GARY UNMARRIED. LAW & ORDER. CSI:NY.  What other shows grabbed your attention last night.

The comments are open.  Tell us what you thought of Wednesday night TV.

I agree completely about Cougar Town!
At first I was a little ‘eh’ about it – I thought it was kind of crass and over-acted. But this week I really felt like it was finding its feet and a little more funny, less icky.
The photo montage actually had my hubby laughing out loud! I liked the quirky personalities and the storyline had a warm spot that softened the wackiness in a great way. A definite season’s pass for me!

Yep, here’s some screencaps of Matt Dallas and his lickable armpits from last night’s ep.

I’m really enjoying Modern Family, Cougar Towm, and surprisingly, Eastwick. I don’t know it it’ll last but I’ll watch it as long as it does. Modern Family was sooo funny!! Phil’s talking heads and Cameron talking about Sophie’s choice, so funny!! and I didn’t watch the Middle and Hank.

Let’s not ever use the phrase “lickable armpits.”

Much to my surprise, I’m really liking Eastwick. I’d never seen any of the previous incarnations of the Witches of Eastwick, so I don’t have much to compare the characters to, but I absolutely know I detest everything about the Darryl character. Definitely yucky. Other than that, the show is way enjoyable to watch!

Modern Family will stay in my rotation, if for no other reason than Cameron is HILARIOUS! I laughed until I cried, just like I did in the pilot. The instant I saw Phil looking at the bike on the sidewalk, I flashed to the Full House ep where Michelle thought she lost her bike and Joey, Danny, and Uncle Jesse all stole identical bikes. Definitely an overused plot device!

I enjoyed the second episode of Cougar Town more than the first, but I still don’t love it. Courteney Cox definitely overacts, and I have a visceral dislike of her because of the way she spells her name. 🙂 I’m sticking with Cougar Town for now, but mostly because it’s paired with Modern Family.

And I can’t forget my love, SYTYCD. As much as I ADORE the show, I just can’t love it as much as I usually do because the last season JUST ended. I already feel like the audition eps have been going on forever, and the top 20 aren’t picked for several more weeks. That being said, I loved seeing the two new dance forms– the New Orleans Bounce and Theater Arts. Clearly the two best of the night were the two contemporary boys, Jonathon and Jakob. And maybe I’m heartless, but I wasn’t moved at all by the older chick whose grandfather died or by the two guy dancers who talked of their rough upbringing. At this point, I don’t give a fig about back stories! And lastly, the b-boy with the shaggy hair — his guaged ears made me a little sick to my stomach. You could stick a half dollar through those things! *shudder*

I second the motion of never using the phrase “lickable armpits.” I threw up a little in my mouth with that one.
