DEXTER: Remains to Be Seen

Get it? It’s called “Remains to Be Seen?” Funny, right?

Anyway, this week we had the “Dexter” version of “Memento,” as Dexter tried to go back in time and remember what he did with Benny’s body. The car crash was really the device that got us into a lot of issues this week, mainly through Harry’s watchful guidance. I’m comforted by the fact that Harry is still present in Dexter’s life, since he sort of swore off the code last season for a time. But, Harry was back in numerous forms, giving Dexter the clues all along to find the body. I have to admit, I was very happy with the clever way the reveal was done and how it signified a return to the Code.

But, along the way, and since this season has began, Harry (read: Dexter’s conscious) has been questioning whether Dex can do it all. Can he have the family, the job and keep the Dark Passenger (that term is starting to grow on me this season, as long as they don’t overuse it.) satisfied? Only time will tell, but this week’s ordeal pointed to both yes and no.

On the positive side, he not only figured out where the body was hidden, but he also broke the Vacation Murderer and prompted Lundy to bring Deb in on the Trinity Killer. On the other hand, he lied to his wife, left a body to decompose in an abandoned boxing ring for hours, and almost died in the first place. This storyline is going to keep coming up and, unless something drastic happens (Rita leaves him, Harrison dies, etc.) I don’t see it changing anytime soon.

But, alas, there was more going on this week. Deb acted like a weirdo, but a damn good cop, and I think that Lundy wants to bring her in to help catch Trinity. Watching Deb, Dex and Lundy all working the same case should be really entertaining, especially since Trinity is such a creepster.

And, yes, that is the scientific term.

Lithgow pulls in another small yet awesome performance as Trinity. At least he was clothed for most of the episode. LaGuerta had to pull rank on Angel, with mixed consequences. Honestly, after being a “Grey’s Anatomy” fan for years, I find myself getting bored with workplace romances like this one. I mean, I hope that they’re both happy and that it doesn’t get in the way of main storylines, but the two pitfalls of television workplace relationships are becoming clear here.

1. One person wants to tell the office and one doesn’t.
2. Since one is most always the other’s boss, rank has to get pulled causing tension.

The reason these things always show up? Because there aren’t many place one can take a workplace romance dramatically. They could end up together and be happy for the duration of the series, but where’s the fun in that?

Why was Quinn so anxious to win back Dexter’s trust? Was it solely because of stealing the money at the crime scene? Because, to be honest, I don’t think we’ve heard the last of it. What if Lundy had brought Quinn in on the case and they had the slightest suspicion that the Vacation Killer and the Trinity Killer were connected? And that money was just part of it all. That would be wild, if not completely improbable. Quinn was an interesting addition to last season, but I wonder if know he’s not just another character that they have to come up with a storyline for.

Overall, this was another great episode with perfect pacing. I’m glad that the missing body didn’t drag out for too long and was wrapped up (no pun intended) quickly, since we have much more important things to deal with in episodes to come.

If Dexter was to take one thing out of his life (Rita, Work, Killing) which do you think he would or should choose?

Philboy is a Midwesterner who spends his days doing PR for a small Catholic university. His can’t miss shows are “Glee”, “HIMYM” and “Dexter”. His thoughts for the week are, “When you think about it, the new crop of shows this season are FANTASTIC!” and “Will something happen to Aster to take her away from the Dark Side of her teen years?”
