AMERICA’S BEST DANCE CREW – Top 9 Crews
August 10, 2009 by Kath Skerry
Last night kicked off Season 4 of AMERICA’S BEST DANCE CREW (ABDC) over on MTV. Nine dance crews from all over the country ere selected to compete in the ultimate dance face-off. This year’s crew is the most diverse to date, representing a myriad of new styles not seen before on ABDC.
..and that could be the problem.
Since since its inception, whether by design or not, ABDC has really been a hip hop/B-Boy showcase. The show has included crews outside of those genres, including last season’s cloggers, Dynamic Edition. But its bread and butter are the tricks and hip hopgraphy that get the people on their feet…and to the phones to vote.
This year, the judges are going to play a more important role than ever. Shane, Lil Mama and JC are going to need to educate the in studio audience, and more importantly the at home audience, about the value of some of these crews. For a show that has been so grounded in hip hop, it’s not going to be easy to get fans to see the artistry in a group like, well, Artistry in Motion or maybe even Vogue Evolution (more on them in a minute). Here’s to hoping the audience’s vocabulary of dance in broadened and they pick up the phone for more than just the death defying tricks. If not, it’s going to be a pretty boring season because Massive Monkees will have wrapped this up in week one.
I, for one, appreciate the new styles brought to the stage this season. Some are clearly better than others and the right crew went home last night. Here’s my brief rundown on what I saw last night.
Beat Ya Feet Kings
- I didn’t get a great first impression of this crew. They are all about the footwork, but the rest of them looked sloppy. And the footwork? Not all that impressive. But, I thought the crew really stepped in up (no pun intended) during the Sudden Death round. They were tighter and had a better grasp on the musicality.
AfroBorike
- This salsa dancing, hip hop crew has potential, but they really need to tighten things up. They didn’t look sharp at all. And I think they’re going to be better off sticking with what they know. I appreciate that they tried to work in a number of genres, but they should really do what they do best.

TRUE BLOOD: Timebomb
August 10, 2009 by Kath Skerry
Filed under #1 featured, True Blood
Alas, I have returned from my slumber (aka two weeks of starting a new job and moving into a new apartment) to review this latest edition of “True Blood.” Let me get started before I get sidetracked by more furniture that needs to be moved…up flights of stairs.
My, my are things heating up! I’m gone for two weeks and everything goes to hell in a handcart, doesn’t it? I thought this was one of the more thought-provoking episodes we have EVER seen, and especially the most intriguing of this season. It really helped to further what I have loved about the show from the beginning: seeing the interactions and complications of vampires living with humans. This week, we really saw the two camps of thought within the vampire community butt heads, or fangs (sorry, it was just too easy) and my education of the Civil Rights Movement kept popping into my head.
Despite how campy this show can be, it’s easy to see the parallels between transpiring events and the civil rights movements of the past…and present. This week we had the passive (Martin Luther King, Jr & Godrick) to the militant (Malcolm X; The Dallas Vampires) trying to take down the same enemy (ignorant people) in wildly different fashions. In the church, everything came to a head, complete with Godrick being the ironic, Jesus-like figure above everyone. It might be unintentional, but the parallels were smacking me straight in the face tonight.
Anyway, it was great watching everyone’s expectations get deflated as Godrick turned out to be as non-violent as a vampire can be, attempting to teach as well as defeat. I wonder if he has always been like this, or if coming out of the coffin has changed him in some ways.
I’ve always been fascinated, also, by the relationship between a vampire and their maker, as well as how that plays into everything else. Apparently, the sheriff’s wishes trump that bond, because Bill was pretty quick to toss his maker on her ass, although I’m sure we haven’t heard the last of her, just like we aren’t done with good ol’ Reverend Newlin.
There were some sweet moments too, tonight, amidst all of the social subcontexts and wasting of time back in Bon Temps. Jason apologizing to Bill was adorable, and might be the biggest win Jason has had in a while. Also, saving Sookie was awesome and I think that, whatever happens with the suicide bomber, Jason will play a big part in being somewhat of a hero there too. After all, Sookie will be in danger too.
As far as Bon Temps goes, I’m not as angry about it as I was earlier in the season, but I still don’t see what it has to do with anything. OK, so we know what Maryann is now. Big whoop. She is making everyone in the town do horrible things (sodomy with a tree might be the worst though. It could even trump eating Daphne’s heart.) What does that matter though? There’s this really weighty storyline of a war between humans and vampires over plain ol’ civil rights, and then there’s this goofy, B-movie subplot involving Dionysus and cannibalism, etc. In relation, I just don’t care.
I’m hoping Maryann and all of her shenanigans will come into play at some point, but until then, it’s just diverting our attention from an amazing primary storyline.
I’m taking bets people…does anyone die in the suicide bombing? Also, where does Maryann fit into the grand narrative of the season?

AMERICA’S BEST DANCE CREW Premieres Tonight – Meet the Crews
August 9, 2009 by Kath Skerry
Filed under #1 featured, America's Best Dance Crew, TV News
This message is going out to all of y’alls, but especially y’alls* that love some SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE.
Tonight is the season premiere of AMERICA’S BEST DANCE CREW, a must-see dance competition that brings together the best of the best of dance crews from all over the country. Your jaw will be on the floor once you see what these cats are able to do. Death defying tricks, inspirational movement, and crazy fun routines that will have you on your feet.
I was a little late to the ABDC game. Last season was the first season I watched in full, and let me tell you…I was hooked! You will be too.
ABDC winners are no joke. Season one champions, Jabbawockeez, are recognizable, even if you never see their faces. The masked crew has appeared on tour with NKOTB, with Shaq during the NBC All Star Weekend, in their own Gatorade commercial and most recently on SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE. Last year’s winners, Quest Crew, are in high demand these days. No surprise…check out this hot ABDC promo featuring Quest crew, and get a sense of the talent you’ll be exposed to starting tonight at 9pm on MTV.
I know many of you reading this are fans of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE. Trust me, you’ll love this show! Not only does it feature Shane Sparks as a judge each week, but SYTYCD alums have been well represented. Last year’s winners, Quest Crew, featured three former SYTYCDancers. Ryan (S1), Hok (S3) and Dominic (S3). And this year, Donyelle Jones, a finalist in S2, is a featured dancer with Artistry in Motion. Reason alone to check it out, right?
So make sure you’re in front of your TV at 9pm tonight for this season of AMERICA’S BEST DANCE CREW.
And to get you ready, here’s a run down of the nine crews that will be competing tonight.
(* I’m not one to encourage binge drinking, but if you were to partake in a drinking game based on the number of times the judges say “y’alls” during a given show…well, let’s just say that you might be better off playing with water.)
AfroBoriké is bringing a Latin-American fire to America’s Best Dance Crew. Previously, all the members of AfroBoriké danced together in a Las Vegas show called “Fuego Raw Talent.”
They describe their style as “spicy” and “exciting” and hope that their hot moves will win enough votes to crown them America’s Best Dance Crew.
Artistry in Motion is a group of ladies on a dancing mission. They are trying to unite the hip-hop and contemporary styles of dancing and turn it into a genre they call “contemp-hop.” The girls hail from all different parts of North America and have combined their individual styles into something special — special enough to get gigs dancing with artists such as Missy Elliot, Black Eyed Peas, Wayne Brady, Lloyd, Ludacris and Gnarls Barkley.
The girls are excited about bringing together many different styles of dance for America’s Best Dance Crew and think their “contemp-hop” is good enough to get them to the top.
