My Take on the 67th Annual Golden Globe Nominations
January 17, 2010 by Kath Skerry
Filed under #1 featured, TV Awards, TV News
John Krasinski, Diane Kruger and Justin Timberlake announced the Nominations for “The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards” back on December 15th. The Golden Globes will be hosted by Ricky Gervais, and will be broadcast live coast to coast Sunday, January 17 on NBC at 8pm EST. I hope you’ll join us for our LIVE chat during the show.
Both Diane Kruger (‘Inglorious Bastards’) and John Krasinski (‘It’s Complicated’ and ‘The Office’) had their projects nominated, but it was Justin Timberlake who stole the show that morning with all his little quips, the most memorable being when upon announcing Emily Blunt as a nominee for Best Actress in a Drama for ‘Young Victoria’ said, “Somebody’s gonna have a good night tonight!”. Referring to his co-announcer, John Krasinski who is engaged to Blunt (it’s almost easy to write that. Therapy is doing me good.)
Below are the nominations in the TV categories. Big surprises this year with GLEE making some sweet music and MONK being snubbed in its final season. And of course, once again I’ll be bitching about the lack of nominations for FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS. What else is new?
Here is my take on each of the TV categories.
Best Comedy
- 30 Rock
- Modern Family
- Entourage
- The Office
- Glee
My Take: Of course I’m excited that THE OFFICE made the cut, but thrilled that MODERN FAMILY is also nominated. Expect to see that show on the list for years to come. Very surprised by GLEE but it seems the HFPA loves their songsters. Bored to death by the nomination of ENTOURAGE. 30 ROCK was expected and deserved. Shocked that NURSE JACKIE didn’t get a nom (although I’m always split if that show is a drama or a comedy. I expect others have the same issue.) I didn’t expect it to happen, but I would have loved to see PARTY DOWN recognized. You can’t tell me that ENTOURAGE is funnier than the PARTY DOWN caterers. And don’t even get me started on the snub of TV’s most watched comedy, the well deserving BIG BANG THEORY.
Best Drama
- Big Love
- Dexter
- House
- Mad Men
- True Blood
My Take: Good thing HOUSE snuck in there as the only show from a major network nominated. Happy to see some of my personal favorites, TRUE BLOOD and MAD MEN, on the list. I don’t watch BIG LOVE or DEXTER but from what I understand both shows deserve the nomination. And of course it wouldn’t be an awards show if FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS wasn’t completely snubbed. I seriously don’t understand why the show never gets the recognition. Maybe next year…oh who am I kidding?

HUMAN TARGET on Fox – First Look

HUMAN TARGET premieres, tonight – Sunday, January 17th at 8pm on Fox. Here’s what you need to know.
About HUMAN TARGET…
It takes a brave, selfless man to make himself a “human target” in order to save the lives of those in danger. Based on the popular DC Comics graphic novel, HUMAN TARGET is a full-throttle action drama centered on CHRISTOPHER CHANCE (Mark Valley, FRINGE), a unique private contractor/security guard hired to protect those in need…who can pay. Call him what you like, because for Chance, it’s about one thing only: saving his clients’ lives. When there is an unusual or imminent threat that can’t be solved through “normal” means of protection, Chance is hired to completely integrate himself into his clients’ lives – to become the human target. If you’re a corporate manager whose disgruntled employee has gone violently off the deep end, Chance is your new auditor. If you’re the president of a bank who’s been tipped off to a potential heist, Chance is your unassuming bank teller. During each job, Chance, assisted by his business partner WINSTON (Chi McBride, “Pushing Daisies”) and hired gun GUERRERO (Jackie Earle Haley, “Watchmen”), puts himself directly in the line of fire as he races against time to save his client, while unraveling the truth behind the mission. With every new danger, Chance’s dark history will also unravel. Does anyone know who Christopher Chance really is, or what secrets lay buried in his past? What would make a man willingly become a HUMAN TARGET?
FRINGE: Johari Window

I love the Thursday night pairing of Bones and Fringe. Tonight was not the first time this season that I’ve thought that a Bones/Fringe cross-over wouldn’t be that far of a stretch. In the past few months, we’ve seen our friends at the Jeffersonian investigating chicken men, bodies of ash, and most recently, possible aliens. I’m all for Hodgins being King of the Lab, but I’m pretty sure that even he would be willing to give it up to Walter Bishop. This, of course, has nothing at all to do with the fact that it would open up the possibility of having David Boreanaz and Joshua Jackson appear simultaneously on my small screen. Surely, I can’t be the only one who has thought of this? OK, enough with my wishful thinking…on to the episode!
Project Elephant
In the late 1970s, Walter was involved in a military project that was exploring the idea of camouflaging soldiers by making them become invisible during action. The soldiers themselves would not actually go from being visible to invisible. Rather, those around them, when exposed to a particular electromagnetic pulse, would have their optic nerves impacted in a way that kept them from seeing the soldiers. The inventor of the idea was a friend of Walters, a man named Edward Cobb.
Present day: a state trooper picks up a young boy on the side of a road. The boy’s facial features appear to be perfectly normal at first, but a few minutes later when the cop glances at him in the rearview window, they are massively malformed. Two adult males with similar facial features come to the station and kill the state trooper and two others. They take the boy, but not before the cops have already taken a photo of him that they inadvertently leave behind as evidence.
We learn that the military testing went very wrong. Prolonged exposure to the pulse caused a genetic mutation amongst all of the people who were unfortunate enough to be within a certain radius of the testing. Edward Cobb’s wife and daughter were two of those who were harmed. Cobb chose to stay behind and carry out his vision of creating “invisibility” by perfecting the electromagnetic pulse. Once he did, he offered the townspeople a choice – they could embrace their deformity and live freely wherever they wanted, or they could be confined to the town and have their condition permanently hidden from themselves and the others around them.
Jimmy Kimmel Rips Jay Leno a New One!

This is getting good. In the latest battle of the late night wars, Jimmy Kimmel took a side…and in a huge way. Hell, after what he did last night, Kimmel might be named Captain of Team Coco. Check out what Jimmy had to say when he was a guest on The Jay Leno Show. And be sure to pay attention at the uncomfortable shuffling of the audience as he relentlessly bashed Jay. All in good fun of course…right?
- [Asked by Leno what the best prank he ever pulled was] “The best prank I ever pulled was I told a guy that—five years from now—I’m gonna give you my show. And then when the five years came, I gave it to him, and then I took it back almost instantly.”
- [Asked by Leno if he ever orders anything off of the TV] “Like NBC ordered your show off the TV?”
- [Asked by Leno what the record is for number of lap dances he’s received in one night] “Strippers, I don’t like in general. Because you have this phony relationship with them for money, similar to that of when you and Conan were on The Tonight Show together, passing the torch… you know what I’m saying.”
- [Asked by Leno what he hasn’t yet hosted, but would like to] “Oh, this is a trick, right? Where you get me to host The Tonight Show and then take it back from me?”
- [Asked why he came on to do the segment] “Listen, Jay, Conan and I have children—all you have to take care of is cars. I mean, we have lives to lead here. You’ve got $800 million, for God’s sakes—leave our shows alone.”

BONES: The X in the File
January 14, 2010 by Sarah Curtis
Holler back, BONES fans! Are you having a good 2010? I hope so. It’s good to have new BONES episodes back, isn’t it? I’ll admit straight off the bat that I’ve never seen an episode of X-Files, so I supposed I might have missed some inside jokes, but all in all, I liked this episode.
THE CASE:
Booth and Brennan are called to Roswell, New Mexico, where a woman’s body has been found dead inside a silver casing type thing. Not that gross at all, and in fact, kind of a cool corpse! The local sheriff denies Booth his FBI jurisdiction and so B&B have to stay in town to solve this case. Along the way, they have close encounters with human kind in the form of some quirky local characters (kind of reminded me of Season One: Man in the Bear. For those keeping score at home, this is a high compliment!). These non-aliens include the local sheriff, who becomes quite helpful, Delmy, the owner of the most famous UFO blog, Marvin, a man who was obsessed with seeking out UFOs (and also Ursula’s lover), and Marcia, the woman with the gun. While Booth interviews the locals, Brennan’s job includes investigating the body (dreaded flesh and all). She finds a memory card in the victim’s stomach connected to dental floss. The victim is Ursula LePine. Booth and Brennan check out her metal trailer and find that it was highly scientific, and when Angela gets the memory card cleared off, she and Cam see what appears to be a UFO.
After further research, it’s clear that what was on the SD card was not alien life form, but rather something else that needed covered up, dumping of chemicals, etc. Booth and Brennan are up against a real challenge in Rachel Adams, who is leading all of that. But she’s not guilty of murder.
I kind of had that cantankerous ranching woman pegged as the murderer, so I was surprised when it was the diner/nostalgic toy owner. But it worked for me.
GMMR Being Preempted

Good morning GMMRers. I wanted to send you a quick note to say that the site will be relatively quiet today and tomorrow. Sadly there was a death in my family and I will be attending the services over the next two days.
Project FIREFLY
For those of you waiting for the first install of Project FIREFLY, hang tight. I’ve watched the first two episodes (ok the first four), and we’ll be talking about episodes 1 & 2 before the week’s end. Sorry we got off to such a rocky start. Kind of like Serenity the first night it took on its new passengers. (See, I did watch.)
AMERICAN IDOL
I wan’t able to watch the premiere of Idol yet? Maybe I’ll be able to get to it tonight. But talk to me. Anybody I should keep my eye out for? Were there any great singers that caught your attention? Any complete sh%t shows that I shouldn’t DVR through?
Late Night Drama Comedy
I may not have been able to watch the late night shows last night, but according to Twitter, it seems there were punches thrown all around the late night circuit. Did you watch any of the talk shows last night? Any stand out moments worth talking about?
Anything else on your mind? I turn it over to you.

Conan O’Brien Issues Statement Regarding NBC’s Late Night Moves
January 12, 2010 by Kath Skerry
Just moments ago, Conan O’Brien released a statement regarding his future with The Tonight Show. In his statement, Conan says he loves “Tonight Show,” but, “I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction.”
Well put. Well played, Mr. O’Brien. I think Conan is better than the treatment he is receiving at the hands of NBC. This statement showed just what class the man has.
People of Earth:
In the last few days, I’ve been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I’ve been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I’ve been absurdly lucky. That said, I’ve been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.
Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.
But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.
HOUSE: The Down Low
January 12, 2010 by Erik Wilkinson
Filed under #1 featured, House, House Recap, Posts by Erik
In my younger years, I had a difficult time forging genuine friendships with males. Absent the pride of athletic achievements or the brashness of alpha male status, I had a difficult time finding common ground with other hormone-driven dudes. In the absence of male bonding, I turned to my favorite TV shows for instructions. When I wanted to learn how to open up about heartbreak and loss, Dawson & Pacey were there. If my colleagues at work did not share my ambition or enthusiasm, I turned to Josh & Sam on The West Wing. My platonic proxys were not a miracle solution. They did, however, give me hope that men could serve as a support system for one another.
Gregory House & James Wilson are not presented to House viewers with syrupy music and heartfelt overtones. On the contrary, this best friendship is loaded with the kind of intellectual clashes, social awkwardness, and jealousy that is recognizable in everyday life. Left in the capable hands of Hugh Laurie and Robert Sean Leonard, the House/Wilson relationship remains the cornerstone of Fox’s most popular drama.
With all due respect to Ethan Embry, whose literary pursuit of Jennifer Love Hewitt in” Can’t Hardly Wait” was robbed in the 1998 Teen Choice Awards, I am making the creative decision to ignore his contributions to this episode. Embry is a fine actor, with a list of credits on IMDB that any working actor would love to have. But let’s be honest. When House & Wilson spend an hour fighting over a woman and fighting off rumors about their sexuality, it is perfectly acceptable to say, “Thanks Ethan, I’ll rent Donnie Brasco next week in tribute to you.”
Unit 3B was occupied by Sasha Alexander, first introduced to me as the temptress of the Witter family, Pacey’s older sister Gretchen on Dawson’s Creek. In a piece of breaking news MSNBC has not reported, she does not appear to have aged since 2001. In addition to her stunning beauty, Alexander brought charm and energy to the role of Nora, object of Wilson and House’s affections. By infusing Nora with an open mind and a gregarious flare, co-writers Sara Hess and Liz Friedman created a character that I hope will return in future episodes. Is it time for Wilson to court his future fourth bride? I choose to remain optimistic.
