Eric Kripke to Step Down as SUPERNATURAL Showrunner - Give Me My Remote : Give Me My Remote

Eric Kripke to Step Down as SUPERNATURAL Showrunner

February 16, 2010 by

Earlier today The CW announced that SUPERNATURAL would be returning to the network for a sixth season. SUPERNATURAL fans took to Twitter, Facebook and blogs (including this one) to discuss the implications of a sixth season. Showrunner Eric Kripke had been quite vocal about his 5 season vision for the series.  What new direction would the show take on if the network picked up a sixth season? Would Kripke still be on board?

Tonight we got that answer.

According to Michael Ausiello, Eric Kripke will step down as showrunner after this season leaving Executive Producer Sera Gamble to take over the reigns. But sources say that Kripke and current co-showrunner, Robert Singer, will remain as “hands-on” Executive Producers on the show. Sources tell Ausiello, that “Eric and Bob will be working very closely with Sera. They are not abandoning the show.” Well, if that’s true I guess that’s good news.

Sera Gamble has been with SUPERNATURAL since Season One and is “well poised” to take over the show.

So SUPERNATURAL fans, does this have any bearing on your feelings for a sixth season? Although Kripke won’t be showrunner are you comforted by the idea that he’ll be a hands-on Executive Producer? Talk to me.

Wow. I don’t know how I feel about this. I think Eric Kripke really wanted SPN to have a 5-season run. Is this his way of saying that he doesn’t agree with the show having any more seasons?
Personally, I would much much rather a show end when the creator planned than have even one more season of forced storylines (uh, Smallville?).
Not to say that I’ll quit watching. I love Sera Gamble, she has a really strong voice in the show. But I trust Eric Kripke and hope he stays involved enough to keep the show from dying a slow and embarrassing death.

As long as the 6th (and presumeably final) season is as good as the first 5 – I’ll be happy. Very sad that Kripke isn’t staying on full time – but with Sera running things, and input from Kripke & Robert Singer I think the show will remain as high calibre as it’s always been. Though I will be curious to see what kind of storyline season 6 has – everything to this point has been a buildup of God vs Lucifer…hard to top that.

I love Sera and love what she does to the boys. It usually means lots of pain and tears and possibly single layers of clothes or less. She learned the ropes from a great showrunner and I have faith that she will do a great job!

I refuse to even think about where season 6 storylines will go. We have 8 episodes still of this season. I’ll wait until summer to ponder next year.

The headline of this post scared me to death. Despite being an avid Supernatural fan, I had not heard this news yet and I automatically expected the worst. I turned to my roommate and started freaking out, but as I read more of the article, I was put more at ease. I think Sera will do a good job and with Eric and Bob still there not all hope is lost. I just don’t think it will quite be the same without the Kripke running the show. Although that might be for the best, since he seems to relish the blood and gore more than I do, and Sera revels in the family drama, which I believe is the heart of the show. It doesn’t even feel like it’s time for announcing season pickups yet but I suppose the early pickup will help mentally prepare me for the rest of the season. Knowing it will be back next year will help me cope with the epic ending of this season.

Sorry @Kristen. My intention wasn’t to mislead 🙂 I’m not too concerned about next season. I think Sera will do a fantastic job, and Kripke and Singer will still be around to guide her if things go astray.

I’m just curious what Season 6 will actually be about! Season 1 and 2 really focused on Azazel while Season 3 had bits of Lilith and Ruby plus Dean’s deal coming due. Season 4 obviously was hunting down Lilith, meeting angels, and starting the apocalypse. Now, Season 5, we’re in the middle of Armageddon waiting to see what the deal is with God and how the boys are gonna defeat Lucifer… So what could they do that could actually tie in to all the former seasons? But on the plus side, Sera has been on the team since the beginning which means she knows what the deal is. She has already wrote/produced a good portion of episodes and as long as Kripke is giving in input I have no doubt about the show. Another plus is… Sera’s a woman… Come on my fellow female SPN lovers. Admit it. You know exactly what that means. ;p SHIRTLESS WINCHESTERS!!! lol. I think whatever they do will work, we just have to have faith. Because seriously how many people really see Supernatural just ending with defeating Lucifer and the brothers riding off into the sunset?
