GLEE’s Lea Michele & Matthew Morrison on the Tony Awards
June 14, 2010 by Kath Skerry
And here you thought you’d have to wait until the Fall to see Mr. Schu and Rachel Berry sharing the same stage. It was a GLEEtastic night at the Tony Awards when Matthew Morrison and Lea Michele took to the stage to perform big Broadway hits. Both did gleeks proud.
It was nice to see Matthew back in his element. If I never have to see him rap his way through another 90’s band boy cover I’d be a happy girl. Tapping and dancing across the stage – I’d like to see more of this next season, please.
There is no questioning the talent of Ms. Lea Michele, but I have to say, having just seen her perform “Don’t Rain on My Parade” a few weeks ago at Radio City during the Glee concert, I actually prefer Rachel Berry’s version. Maybe it was nerves, but it seemed like Lea not only rushed the song, but was borderline screaming it near the end. The optimism and spirit “Rachel” brought to the song was lost in Lea’s “passionate” (read: angry) performance. Of course it was tres adorable when she sat right in the lap of her best friend, Jonathan Groff. We are going to miss you next year, Jesse St. James.
Watch Matthew and Lea’s performances and share your thoughts.

I thought Mr. Schu was having trouble at the end, but that Lea got stronger as her song went on. She did have a sour note near the end, but I was overall impressed by both! It seemed their mics were too close since we could hear all the breathing. 🙂
Both sounded good, but I agree with what was said on Twitter, Lea should’ve sang like she does on Glee. Much much better and not as angry. Cool to see what they sound like as themselves and not as Glee characters. Hopefully Morrison’s performance will wake up the Glee people and stop trying to force him to do rap every few episodes.
Watched, and really enjoyed! But was it just me, or did anyone else think that the two would be performing together? Just the way they were marketing “a performance from Glee’s Matthew Morrison & Lea Michele”, I figured they’d duet a number. Oh well, was nice to see them separate too.
I agree about Lea’s performance … it seemed off, but I did squee out loud when she sat in Jonathan’s lap. So cute!! And Matthew’s performance was awesome. We got the classic dance moves, and yes … no rapping!! (Although I’ll admit, I like his white-boy raps!).
