SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE Judge Mia Michaels Says AdeChike Should’ve Been in Week 1’s Bottom 3

Backstage at SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE on Thursday (June 17) night, Mia Michaels was not mincing words… not that she or any of the regular judges ever do.

When asked how she felt about week 1’s bottom 3, she spoke up willingly: “I actually was shocked at Cristina [being in that position]. I thought [it should’ve been] AdeChike. For me, he didn’t show any personality and I feel he’s very stiff in his movement. You know, I hope he gets better. I mean, that’s what the show’s about: getting better every single week. So hopefully he will.”

Regarding week one eliminee, Alexie, Michaels said she was disappointed in both her hip hop performance as well as her solo, because she was missing that fierceness and she’s better than that: “I don’t know if it was nerves, I don’t know if it was intimidation, I’m kind of baffled by it.”

So who is Mia’s early favorite to win it all? “Alex,” she answered, without hesitation. “He’s perfect. And you know what I’m so happy about is that he actually has a personality. I’m so happy about that, because he was a little bit more quiet in the beginning, but now he’s coming out [of his shell] and I think he’s becoming really proud of himself. He’s starting to see that he is good and I love that. I feel like he’s strapping on his wings and now he’s ready to soar.”

But at the top of Michaels’ personality chart this season is, without a doubt, Kent. “Kent’s personality is hilarious. He’s just Kent!,” she exclaimed. “That’s it, that’s just all you have to say!”

Mia’s fellow judges are in agreement, as Nigel Lythgoe expressed the same sentiment during my backstage interview with him, noting the dance perfection of Alex and the personality of Kent, hoping that the two different traits will somehow come together in one dancer this season.

And what do you guys think?

Are you on the same page as Mia and Nigel?

And who is your early favorite?

And how happy are you that it’s summer, aka SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE season, once again?

AMERICAN IDOL’s Crystal Bowersox Wants Lenny Kravitz To Give Her A Call

June 18, 2010 by
Filed under #1 featured, American Idol

To all the AMERICAN IDOL fans who were bummed about most of the female contestants getting eliminated early this year, you aren’t alone.

Season 9 runner-up Crystal Bowersox tells GIVE ME MY REMOTE that being the only girl in the competition during the final weeks wasn’t an ideal situation for her.

“It was a little disheartening to see the girls go home so fast,” Bowersox says in the video below. “When it was down to me and Siobhan [Magnus], that was a lot of fun… we get the same humor and stuff. But once she went home, then it was just me and the guys and it was like… I don’t like to sit and dwell and think that gender really plays a role in anything, but unfortunately, in our society, it does. But I stuck it out until number 2. That’s amazing.”

Agreed. You go, mama.

But now that the show is over, going home is actually what Bowersox is most looking forward to.

“I’m definitely excited about going home,” she tells us re: hitting Ohio on the upcoming IDOL tour. “I’m going to be doing an original song there in Toledo, which is really cool. It’s the one they used on the show… I’m proud of that.”

And once the tour is done, it’s time to work on the album and Crystal knows exactly whom she wants to collaborate with.

“I’m still trying to get Lenny Kravitz to see me waving [for his attention],” she says with a laugh. “I need his funkadelicness. I need the groove. I need it.”

Check out the video for more on that, plus her thoughts on which AI people she’d like to work with. Oh, she’s also trying her hand at being a spokesperson for Diet Coke. It’s cute.

Take a look…

AMERICAN IDOL Winner Lee DeWyze on Going All The Way, His Upcoming Album

June 18, 2010 by

It’s not easy being the winner of AMERICAN IDOL.

The last several weeks have been a whirlwind of interviews, appearances and such for season 9 victor Lee DeWyze… and it may be taking a bit of a toll on him.

DeWyze had already spent several hours talking to reporters by the time GIVE ME MY REMOTE caught up with him yesterday (June 17), and as you’ll see in the video below, the poor kid was kind of out of it.

I triple d-o-double g dare you to find something more utterly fantastic than the music video for Snoop Dogg’s new song “Oh Sookie”. Yes, an entire song dedicated to that fiesty, vamp-loving waitress, Sookie Stackhouse of HBO’s TRUE BLOOD.

This is a must watch for all TRUE BLOOD fans. Here’s to hoping Alan Ball can find a way for Snoop Dogg to drink some gin and juice at Merlotte’s next season. I’m off to watch again.

NBA FINALS: Christina Aguilera vs. Christina Aguilera

June 18, 2010 by

Christina Aguilera was center-stage at the Staples Center on Thursday (June 17), singing the National Anthem for the second time in three nights of the NBA Finals.

With Game 7 on the line, the Lakers brought back Aguilera — who sang before they won Game 6 — hoping she’d usher more luck their way. (She did. The Lakers defeated the Celtics to win the Finals with a score of 83-79.)

But since Aguilera took on such a huge song twice this week, we thought we’d get your opinion on which version was better.

Was it pre-Game 6?

Or did you prefer her pre-Game 7 performance?

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE Man Nigel Lythgoe Apologizes for Lying, Critiques Alexie and Spills on More Changes To Come

Long headline.

I know.

I’m sorry, but I had a relatively lengthy backstage interview with my favorite SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE man, Mr. Nigel Lythgoe, after Thursday (June 17) night’s elimination show, and we talked about many, many things.

You can see most of them in the video below, but first, a quick overview:

Nigel followed up his Twitter apology — for tricking me into thinking either Billy Bell or Alex Wong hadn’t made the Top 10 — with an in-person ‘I’m sorry’ and I decided to let him off the hook, especially since I’m so pumped up about this season. Frankly, I think the changes he’s brought to the show are working, given the skill level we’re already seeing displayed. But Nigel feels they actually made several mistakes during the season’s first competition episode on Wednesday night.

On his list of complaints? The all-stars peace’ing out post-performance.

“I hate the all-stars leaving the stage when they’re finished [dancing],” he said. “I want them standing there [next to their Top 11 dance partner while the judges’ comment]. I think America’s wise enough to know that you’re not voting for the all-star, you’re voting for the [Top 11] dancer, so there’s no reason [the all-star shouldn’t stay on stage], I don’t think it would confuse anybody that the all-star is there. And [then] they can support their partner.”

So, kids, expect to see that change in effect as of next week.

Watch the clip for more on that, plus Nigel’s advice to eliminee Alexie. He’s also talking about several of the other contestants including Cristina, Kent, Alex and Robert… and, yes, I do raise the subject of how very strong the boys are this season… so take a look to hear what he has to say about that…

I should’ve fought a little harder for Jarrell Robinson.

Because I really loved watching him perform, in fact.

But it’s hard to argue with Nigel!

Anyhoo, I have to be up in a few hours for my one-on-one dance lesson with Alexie — yep, that’s happening, please come back to GMMR to see how it goes — so I’m calling it a night, kids.

But if you want to keep this discussion going, comment me…

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE: Week 1’s eliminee talks backstage with GMMR

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE’s week one eliminee might be too cute for the judges’ taste, but God bless her, she most definitely took Thursday (June 17) night’s difficult news like a mature and professional young woman…

Comments Off on AMERICAN IDOL: Casey James Plays The Guitar, The Top 10 Sing ‘Blister In The Sun’

GIVE ME MY REMOTE hung with the AMERICAN IDOL Season 9 Top 10 today and we have a lot to show for it… you know, as far as video is concerned.

We already gave you a sneak peek of said Top 10 taking on Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You,” but after that, the group broke out into an impromptu performance of THE VIOLENT FEMME’s “Blister in the Sun.” Not everyone knew all the words, but they made it work…

Casey James spent very little time without some sort of guitar, which we found adorable. Check him out, just messing around before the rest of the contestants got to the stage…

And yes, we have more of his guitar skills on tape. Make sure to check back later this week for footage of Casey and Aaron Kelly doing their thing…

Feeling HOT IN CLEVELAND?

June 17, 2010 by
Filed under #1 featured, Hot in Cleveland, TV News

Are you feeling HOT IN CLEVELAND?

Apparently so, as Wednesday (June 16) night’s premiere was the number one show on cable, attracting nearly 5 million viewers to its first telecast.

Now, whether that audience will return next week is unknown at this point, but even if the sitcom loses half of those eyeballs, it could still be considered a success for TV LAND.

My prediction?

Yeah, some of those viewers will bounce, but it’ll be okay.

I wasn’t so sure, however, when watching the pilot’s cold open, which took place on a plane. It was way over-the-top, pretty cheesy and a little predictable too. I probably would’ve switched the channel if the promise of Betty White in later scenes wasn’t looming.

But then, there was the bar.

Having unexpectedly landed in Cleveland, Ohio, the three L.A. girlfriends on the aforementioned plane — played by Wendy Malick (JUST SHOOT ME), Jane Leeves (FRASIER) and Valerie Bertinelli (you know, the Weight Watchers lady) — show up at a local watering hole to get hammered and what they find there is nothing short of astounding.

The men in Cleveland think they’re hot.

Now, I don’t know, maybe it’s my own personal point of view that made this scenario funny to me, but as a girl who lives in Los Angeles and travels to the midwest a few times every year, the comedy of the scene was way relatable. I mean, I’m not knocking the midwest — I grew up in Michigan and love it dearly — but I’d be lying if I said I haven’t had the experience of walking off the plane at Detroit Metro Airport and all of a sudden feeling 10 notches more attractive than I was at an L.A. bar just 12 hours prior.

And each one of the ladies in the HOT IN CLEVELAND cast delivers a solid line, illustrating this phenomenon:

“They’re looking at us. In L.A., they look past us!” -Bertinelli’s character, realizing that the guys in the room were noticing her…

“Look how adorably heterosexual they are. In L.A., it’s always a question.” -Malick’s character, assessing the three men who had just extended an invite to their table (and may I just add an emphatic ‘Mhmmmm’ in response to this statement)…

“We appear to have landed in a dimension where men hit on women their own age. We owe it to science to investigate.” -Leeves’ character, self-explanatory…

Of course, then we meet Betty White’s character — who is the ‘caretaker’ of the home where the ladies decide to stay — and she just knocks it out of the park with her effortless wit, all rude and to-the-point.

The best of her many one-liners came towards the end of the episode when Bertinelli says that she wants to try and revamp her life and reinvent herself and White walks into the tender scene saying, “You’re not going to become one of those women who like themselves, are you? Because everybody hates those women.”

So, yeah, I might have to watch another episode.

You?

TOP CHEF D.C.: Season Premiere

June 17, 2010 by
Filed under #1 featured, Posts by Erik, Top Chef

Summertime is usually associated with beach getaways and relaxation. Not for me. In my house, the sunny season is all about Padma Lakshmi and gourmet recipes. That’s right, Top Chef is back for Season 7!

This year’s competition is set in Washington D.C., so the contestants will have ample opportunities to have their food criticized by snarky foodies in business dress. Nothing says Top Chef like a random congressional aide complaining that, “the Cod was just too much!”

More importantly, Top Chef D.C. is the perfect vehicle for “Fantasy Sports Widows,” significant others who have been ignored by loved ones who are obsessed with Fantasy Football or Baseball. If you fit that description, Bravo is helping you fight back, with an all-new Top Chef Fantasy Game for Season 7.

Now, along with rooting for your favorite contestants, you can keep track of the points they receive for winning challenges, receiving compliments, or arguing with other players! Bravo really outdid themselves in designing the game, and I watched the premiere more closely to figure out who would be on my team!

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE: Screaming for Robert, Alex, Kent and Jose

Since Mary Murphy is M.I.A. this season, allow me to fill in and SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAM in her place.

I’m screaming for Robert who is a revelation. Who is this beautiful boy, who dances like a man, yet still comes across as an excited kid when he’s not performing? The way he attacked that Sean Cheesman African Dance number with his lines and his lifts and his leaps and… I don’t really know what was going on, I just know it was awesome… And mad props to the choreographer. We need more of this…

robert 11 @ Yahoo! Video

I’m screaming for Jose, who is arguably the most exciting and dynamic hip hop dancer this show has ever seen. This wasn’t the best hip hop number in its history, but notice the fluidity and special nuances he brings to it…

@ Yahoo! Video

I’m screaming for Alex because, well, he’s perfection… I will say that the judges’ praise for the performance was a little over-the-top. SYTYCD has had many genius moments over the course of seven seasons, but Alex is certainly a welcome addition to that already long list of awesome…

alex 11 @ Yahoo! Video

I’m screaming for Kent because that farm boy can dance, damn it! He looked like a ballroom baby last night, did he not? The kid said he’s never tackled the style before and yet he kept up with Anya who — as Nigel pointed out — is one of the best ballroom dancers in the world. I mean, how can you not root for this kid…

kent 11 @ Yahoo! Video

Riiiiiiiiiiiight??

Couple things, however, before I go. There were several other performances that deserve honorable mentions — such as Billy and (all-star) Lauren’s super fun ‘Footloose’ routine, Lauren and Ade’s dynamic Mmmm ‘Oh Yeah’ number and Cristina and Mark’s ‘Starstruck’ Jazz. In fact, there was not a single bad partnership in the entire episode. Technically — with the exception of maybe Melinda — everyone performed at the very highest of levels. Having just the Top 10 (er, well, 11) best dancers on the show from the very start, and pairing them with already-seasoned “all-stars” has raised the bar tremendously as far as skill level is concerned. That seems to be coming across quite obviously. But I agree with the judges’ criticism regarding “filling the space.” Ashley’s contemporary routine with Neil is a perfect example. She danced impeccably last night. Just beautifully. And yet, there was something missing. I didn’t scream for her. And I so wanted to.

So, hopefully, these crazy crazy talented kids will get the message they were given and be able to dig just a little bit deeper next week, because it feels to me like we could be right on the precipice of serious greatness this season.

Do you agree?

Manhattan’s most… uh… intriguing gals go for each other’s throats one last time.

Hey CBS, Play Nice with Our Favorite Actors

So CBS has made some major cast changes in the past couple of days.

Seems CRIMINAL MINDS is losing AJ Cook, we’ll see less of Paget Brewster next season and we’re now hearing that Eddie Cibrian is off CSI: MIAMI — and so, yeah, we’re just kind of wondering what’s going on.

We know both shows are aging, but to lose the aforementioned actors seems harsh.

And the CRIMINAL MINDS crew isn’t taking these developments too well either — both Brewster and Cook have tweeted about their change in status, while cast mate Thomas Gibson has expressed his dismay — and the shock of it all just has us thinking about all the other actors we don’t want to see exiting.

CBS, you have a lot of faces we’re not willing to let you part with. We made a list…
