BONES Rumor Roundup
July 17, 2010 by Marisa Roffman
If you’re a BONES fan, you may have noticed that new rumors about season 6 have been popping up every other day.
Instead of devoting a post to each rumor, I thought we’d just tackle a few of them at once and see if we can make some sense of what’s being reported around the interwebs, mmkay?
(And, yeah, if you want to remain spoiler-free for season 6, probably best to stop reading now…)
So, first the rumor/potential spoiler followed by my take on them. This is not gospel… just my speculation.
1. TV Guide Magazine is reporting that BONES is bringing back the Gravedigger and killing off a character.
Maybe? It’s entirely possible that it’s happening. Several of the squinterns have landed other acting roles which could conflict with their time on BONES and none of them are contracted to the show.
However, it’s worth it to note that BONES creator Hart Hanson was only quoted as saying someone will be a “victim.” Victim doesn’t necessarily mean the person dies. Brennan, Hodgins and Booth were all victims of the Gravedigger and they’re still alive.
But who knows, maybe something was said that wasn’t included in the article which indeed indicated that a character will die.
Either way, I’m really excited to see that the Gravedigger is returning. Even though she was convicted of her crimes in season 5, I never felt that her storyline was finished. Whether it turns out that she had an accomplice or there’s some technicality that brings her back into the lives of our friends at the Jeffersonian, I’m psyched.
Hopefully she’ll actually show up early in season 6 as they’re currently planning. Fans who were at last year’s BONES Comic-Con panel may remember that we were told the Gravedigger trial would happen in episode 5 or 6, but it was then bumped to late in the second half of the season.
2. The one-year time leap has been scrapped. Instead, the team will meet up after just 7 months to help solve a case when one of their own is thrown under the bus by a vicious media attack.
Executive producer Stephen Nathan confirmed to EW that the team will, in fact, reunite to help one of their own. So, yes, that is legitimate.
But all of the other details about the season premiere should be taken with a grain of salt. It seems a lot of the assumptions about what will happen in that opening hour are based on leaked casting sides (aka script pages that are distributed so actors can audition for parts).
Sometimes they are reliable. Sometimes they are not. Because it’s hit-or-miss, I generally try not to put too much stock into them.
It’s also incredibly important to note that TPTB at BONES leaked fake casting sides last year for the fifth season premiere. They were aware that fans were getting ahold of the sides and that’s how they dealt with it.
Did they do it this year? I genuinely have no idea. I wouldn’t be entirely surprised, especially since everyone in that camp seems to be very spoiler-phobic right now. And honestly, if I was a writer or showrunner, that’s exactly what I’d do — especially for a season premiere that fans have spent months speculating about.
3. Booth’s bringing home a girlfriend.
Yes, I’ve written about this before, but since I’m still getting tweets about it, best to set the record straight. Last I heard, this was still the plan.
Is it possible it has changed? Absolutely.
But seeing as TV Guide wrote about it just last week — with virtually the same details I, myself, had been told about the character — I’d say that, unless someone specifically fed them an old spoiler that was no longer true, it seems like it’s happening.
However, at this point, we’re in wait-and-see mode with all these spoilers. We won’t know anything further until TPTB start talking more.
And even then, we’ll only get a fraction of what’s to come, so I’m just going to stop going back and forth about what may or may not happen.
For now, at least.
The good news? I’ll be stalking Hart and covering the BONES panel at Comic-Con next Friday (July 23), so if any of these subjects are raised — and I suspect they will be — we’ll have all that business reported here at GIVE ME MY REMOTE.

Once again you are the voice of reason amongst the insanity that is flooding teh internets. Thank you!
Thanks for clearing that up!! I never know what to believe these days but you are surely a reliable source that I count on every time there is a hiatus!
Thanks for the round-up, and the voice of reason. I’d like to comment on what I feel to be an inconsistency around your emphasis on the weighting of TV Guide reporting between spoiler #1 & spoiler #3.
In the Gravedigger spoiler, you imply that TV Guide misinterpreted Hart Hanson about the GD ‘victim’, which undermines the credibility of their report. Yet in the majorly angst-inducing ‘Booth brings home a girlfriend’ you suggest that the very fact that TV Guide printed the story adds an element of credibility to the rumor. (I know that you added the qualifying clause that TV Guide could have been fed an old spoiler – but after the Season 4 finale debacle, one would think that lessons had been learned).
My point is that you cannot have it both ways. Do we place our faith in the validity of rumor scraps just because they are published by TV Guide? Or do we concede that TV Guide, along with everyone else not on the BONES payroll, are subject to the acutely spoiler-phobic hiatus period?
I wish you luck, and lots of great scoops for Comic Con next week. It will be interesting to read your take on the Q&A involving HH, ED & DB – it will also be fascinating to get your perspective on the atmosphere on the day, because things are ‘pretty angsty’ around Twitter and the message boards.
Thanks for the update. You are the voice of reason. You told us last May about the GF I was not surprised about some of the spoilers.
@Skole- TVGuide.com and TV Guide Magazine are two (slightly) different things. I have the upmost respect for both publications, so I’m not trying to imply they either of them intentionally misled anyone (if that is even what happened). They may not have. Like I said, I have no idea if anyone is being killed off, and things are often said during interviews that aren’t used in articles/blog posts to indicate a storyline is going a certain way. For instance, the interviewer might have followed up after HH said someone will be a victim by asking if someone will be killed and he confirmed that, but the reporter decided to not include that in the article because the quote wasn’t worth it to put in the limited amount of space they had. I wouldn’t entirely be surprised if they killed someone off. It would make sense, actually. But I’ve seen people hard-core freaking out about this article, and I just thought it was worth it to note that the only thing HH was officially quoted as saying was that someone will be a victim. Even if it turns out that someone doesn’t die, I don’t think it was maliciously done to mislead the fans.
The TVGuide.com online scoop re: Booth’s GF was worth noting only because they are the same details I was told by a completely different source. It wasn’t because it was TV Guide that made me lend credibility to the report (though, of course, they are incredibly reliable in my experience). So either TPTB at BONES are sticking to the plan (in spite of the fact that some of the season 6 plan has already been changed), or…I don’t know.
Hope that clears things up! (and thanks for the good thoughts re: CCI :))
I really appreciate your taking the time to respond to my query. As you are well aware, a lot of fan forums are discussing the spoilers, including the one that I moderate on. I’m not located in the USA, so I didn’t appreciate that your TV Guide references referred to two separate entities.
It is tough enough having the showrunners’ comments intensely speculated upon without the ability to seek clarification. With the few articles that are emerging at the moment, every detail gets pounced upon and dissected up for discussion within hours. The fact that you have been kind enough to provide some additional clarification within the constraints of the relationship with your sources is a lovely gesture on your part.
Thanks Marisa – I’ll be pulling an all-nighter in my corner of the globe as the CCI news breaks.
FYI – my correct Twitter profile name is on this message.
@Skole_Bone: Glad you saw my reply! I really appreciate to opportunity to clarify exactly what I meant, because I’m sure you weren’t the only one who had the same question 🙂
Yeah, I suspected the fan forums would be going crazy over everything. Guessing things will go into over-drive next week. Wow, you’re going to be up all-night? That’s dedication!
the storm over booth love interest has calm way down/ready to see how they handle the storyline.
