NBC Plans 30 ROCK Live Show, Makes Rob Lowe a Series Regular on PARKS AND REC

July 30, 2010 by

For fans of NBC comedies, the news coming out of the NBC Executive Session at TCA is pretty epic.

First up, 30 ROCK will be airing a live episode on October 14 — with original tapings for both the east and west coasts.

Over on PARKS & RECREATION, Rob Lowe has been promoted to series regular. Sadly, the show is still scheduled as a mid-season series, so there’s no word on when we’ll actually see new episodes.

And for those who were hoping that THE OFFICE would wrap up this season when Steve Carell left, well it’s not happening. Angela Bromstad, NBC’s entertainment chief, appears to be dead set against that idea. She compared the notion to the network ending ER when George Clooney left, which of course they did not.

Um, so not the same, but that’s not an argument we’re going to win.

Also of note:

  • The season premiere of PARENTHOOD has moved to September 14.
  • There will be a special sneak preview of the new Jimmy Smits series OUTLAW after the season finale of AMERICA’S GOT TALENT.
  • September 16th will mark the season premiere of THE APPRENTICE.

What to make of this news from NBC? You excited for the 30 ROCK live shows? Thrilled Rob Lowe is going to be a series regular? Excited (or annoyed) that NBC is sticking with THE OFFICE?

While I think that The Office is an ensemble show with a lot of it’s strength coming from the ‘background’ characters, Steve Carrell is the figure head, I don’t want to see one of my favorite shows ‘jump the shark’ and become something I don’t recognize. I feel this will happen when The Office continues without him. Maybe NBC will realize it’s mistake soon enough or maybe I’ll pretend The Office ended at Season 7.

And I couldn’t be more excited about live 30 Rock!!!!
