BONES: Emily Deschanel Talks Directing, Kicking Butt and Brennan Being Jealous in Season 6

Emily Deschanel has a big season coming up on BONES.
In addition to Deschanel directing her first episode, her character, Brennan, will face a case unlike anything she’s ever seen before.
Not to mention the fact that she may have to throw down to protect what’s hers…
Big stuff, people.
GIVE ME MY REMOTE chatted with the lovely Deschanel and got her take regarding what’s on tap…
I got several tweets yesterday asking if you directed scenes in the BONES season premiere. Apparently there’s a rumor going around. So, just to be clear, have you directed any part of the season opener?
Emily Deschanel: No. I’m directing later on in the season. That rumor probably got started because I was shadowing the director for prep [of the season premiere], because that’s the only chance I’d get to shadow a director on prep… I’m always filming an episode [when directors are doing prep work]. It was a great experience because it was Ian Toynton, one of our co-executive producers, who is directing [the premiere] and he’s directed a lot of our episodes. So he was really helpful to me.
And of course it must be helpful during that shadowing experience to already have an established working relationship.
ED: Yes, exactly. We’re already comfortable with each other and I respect him a lot. It’s a good rapport.
Your co-star David Boreanaz (Booth) has already directed several episodes of the show. Do you anticipate he will be a little bit of a troublemaker when you get your shot behind-the-camera?
ED: You know what, I think he’ll give me a little trouble, but ultimately he’ll be wonderful. He’s so supportive of me. He’s the first person to say how much he supported me directing and he’s been really lovely that way. I really have a great partner. I think it’ll be great. He’ll give me a hard time, but I wouldn’t expect anything less of him. I’d be kind of disappointed if he didn’t [give me a hard time].
I’ve heard Brennan is going to have difficulty with an upcoming case — the fourth episode of season six has Brennan dealing with a body that bears remarkable similarities to her own, which could lead to a change in her own behavior going forward. What have you heard about that hour?
ED: I don’t know! I haven’t really heard that much about that episode. You’re putting together pieces that I don’t know about! I think that [experience] would be quite profound. I mean, Brennan is around death all the time, and she probably thinks she’s comfortable with death and her own mortality. But sometimes when you really face your own death, it’s a different situation. I think she’s comfortable in her mind because she’s compartmentalized things, suppressed concept and emotion and I think [seeing something like] that could be quite profound and life-changing in a way.
I’d imagine that would also change the way she sees the people around her as well.
ED: Absolutely. When you think you’re facing your own mortality, you start to weed out the riff-raff and really appreciate people who are important in life.
But this season, Brennan is going to find that one of the most important people in her life — Booth — has a new someone special in his personal life. Will Brennan be experiencing any honest-to-goodness jealousy over his new girlfriend, Hannah?
ED: You know, I think that there is serious jealousy there. But I think Brennan is the kind of person who’s not always aware of the jealousy — or any emotion — that she feels. It’s like she feels it, but doesn’t really understand it. So that will be an interesting dynamic for sure.
When we talked at Comic-Con, you mentioned you’d be willing to kick Hannah’s butt. Are you still up for that? The fans are all for it.
ED: I heard the actress [who plays Hannah] talking…I think she’s a martial arts expert. So there may have to be some ass kicking or something. She may be kicking my ass. I’m not an expert. I love doing that, but…I’m Bones, you know?
Brennan has martial arts expertise! She can wipe the floor with her.
ED: Yeah. We never said Hannah had [martial arts training]! Maybe we will say that. I don’t know what’s going to be said. But apparently the actress has those skills.
Either way, we’d totally put our money on Brennan in a Hannah-Brennan tussle.

Ugh, the fighting questions were so annoying, sorry. I wish you could have used that moment to ask more important questions, to be honest. Emily said it wasn’t going to be anything like that, yet everyone keeps asking her about some catfight.
Marisa, I apologize if I’m about to sound like a complete bitch, but I really feel sorry for you because some of the more fanatical B/B shippers are bombarding you with unnecessary tweets and it’s ridiculous. I’ve been reading your recent tweets. Now, you have to post an interview sooner to “calm” them down? Why? They shouldn’t have a comfort pillow so they can feel better. If they want to jump ship, let them. They need to stop looking at this show as the B/B epic romance show, because it’s not. What’s happening is happening and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. No amount of reassurance is going to change anything. HH, DB, ED, whoever don’t always tell the truth no matter how much you know them. I think everyone should just watch the show and stop worrying about B/B. It’s just getting too ridiculous, now. It seems HH is trying to tone down the B/Bness and everyone is all going crazy. The B/Bness NEEDS to tone down.
Again, I’m sorry Marisa. I had to let that out. I just think you shouldn’t be fan pressured into constantly reassuring these shippers. They need to learn to deal with it and go with the flow. Thanks for this interview, btw. Emily looked great.

Any way, people should calm down with their hate/crazy tweets because there is not enough BB information. BB is not the only part of the show and I think Hart finally saw that again. It’s really annoying how shipper fans behave as if the show was written for them and send tweets demanding BB info…go read a fic or something.
I am not sure I am one of “those” shippers.. because I don’t know exactly what it means. I never twitted Marisa for emotional support, nor I am venting against producers.
But yes, I am a shipper, I watch Bones for B&B so, not liking any of it. I haven’t read a spoiler yet that sounded intriguing and made me want to watch season 6.
I am not saying that all the fans feel like me. And everyone is entitled to own opinions and I respect that.
In any case I am so glad to hear Brennan will not display a jalousy like a teenager nor will engage in any cat fight. The stories sound bad enough, at least I hope they leave the charachters true to themselves.
Anyway, ratings will show clearly if Hanson had a great idea or just killed his show.

I do agree with the others who say that they are embarrassed with the OVER REACTION of Bones fangirls. It is getting way out of line.
The venom that some have when they don’t get their own way towards the actors and the Bones crew is shameful.

I have watched this show from day one and it is Hart’s show not your’s or mine. No one can change it, so stop mouthing of to everyone associated with it on the forums and on Twitter, crying like spoilt children and throwing your toys out of the pram.

Marisa is a doll to put up with you all. She does a wonderful job. Major Kudos to her. Guy’s let her breathe and do her job without Bones fangirls breathing down her neck. She has a job to do that involves other tv shows to you know.

Hey guys, I appreciate all the passion you have for the show, but can you please respect your fellow posters? I understand many of your are upset about what’s going to happen, but some people are excited about the arc. No one is right, no one is wrong, we’re all entitled to our own opinions.

@CAO who? My name IS Nikki. Who the heck is “lol”? I don’t frequent EW(?). So, try again. If you read my statement, I didn’t insult B/B shippers. I was talking about the more fanatical shippers. There’s different types of B/B shippers. How did I insult the fanatical B/B shippers? I didn’t call them names. And, how am I playing the victim? I’m not. I have NO fear and that’s why I said what I had to say. I KNEW a few people wouldn’t like what I had to say. I DON’T CARE. I’m just as entitled to my opinion as much as anyone here. So, obviously you’re just spouting off at the mouth without knowing what’s going on. It’s obvious that Marisa is being fan pressured. She wasn’t going to post an interview until later on, down the line, but the constant tweeting from some paranoid, fanatical B/B shippers made her change her hectic schedule around so she can post the interview earlier. She shouldn’t have to do that. Bones is not the only show that she covers. Trust me, I’m the last person who’s paranoid.

I think the one thing we all agree on is that Marisa rocks and is totally repsonsive to the fans’ concerns-even when we’re a little freaked out (and I was one who tweeted Marisa with questions, which she so awesomely responded to quickly).
So the best we can do is wait and see how the season turns out, and thank Marisa for letting us have a sounding board for all of our opinions.

You’re throwing all these assumptions around because I’m not a B/B shipper. Who cares? There are B/B shippers and non-B/B shippers. Who said anything about me shipping Booth/Hannah? my mind gripe about hannah is that booth never mention PARKER. ITS liked he forgets he even has a son.
Per @Marisa’s comments, we really need to STOP making personal attacks. It’s not the intention when we post BONES content. We are all fans with differing opinions and we need to be respectful. We love our TV shows and have strong feelings, but we need to remember that we are talking about fictional people and there is nothing to be gained by being ugly towards each other. We are all better than that.

Okay, first of all I love Bones! Second, whoever says Bones isn’t about the B&B relationship must not really watch the show. You may watch the show, but do you WATCH the show? lol! Sure the show’s is about solving crimes using the bones but, the chemistry between B&B is what gives the show it’s edge. Without the B&B dynamic, it would just blend in with the rest of the crime dramas on TV right now. I mean come on, B&B “are the center”, you know? The show is about the relationships betweetn all the characters, especially B&B…the crime solving thing is just a bonus…lol! (Of course without the crime solving part it wouldn’t be as good…lol!)
Just stating a point…don’t hate on us B&B shippers and we won’t hate on you. lol!
P.S. I didn’t watch Angel either…lol! But I still think DB is awesome! 🙂 ED rocks too!
