Alex Wong and tWitch – Hip Hop: SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE

July 1, 2010 by
Filed under So You Think You Can Dance, SYTYCD

This is the routine that all SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE fans will be talking about tomorrow.  In case you missed it, or maybe you just want to watch it a few more times, here is Alex and tWitch’s Hip Hop routine.

[Note: For all you non-SYTYCDancers, what makes this dance extra special is that Alex is a trained ballet dancer. He’s not a hip hop’per…or so we all thought.]

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE: Top 9 Performances

Sadly I’m not sitting in the Woo watching with the my SYTYCD crew. There will be no fits of late night laughter, parked one the side of the road. And if you have no idea what any of this means, then clearly you haven’t been listening to our SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE podcasts. To that I say shame on you…shame.

This week it’s just me – no Ducky –  and for the first time in a long time, I’m going to take to the good old blog and share my thoughts on each of tonight’s performances.

If you’re new to my SYTYCD recaps, I watch, I pause, I write and then I go see what the judges have to say. But really, why listen to the judges when you have someone right here who has absolutely no experience with dancing? I mean…

So let’s get to it.

Tonight’s theme is “Inspiration”. Now if this was an episode of GLEE we’d hear the word inspiration at least 45 times. Hopefully, despite this over indulgent opening, we won’t be beat over the head with the theme. How about you let me be inspired by the shirtless men about to take the stage.

Here are the guys and here are the girls (…at least for now)
Sorry but I have to comment on tonight’s introduction of the Top 9. How odd to only have three girls left this early in the season. It was noticeably uneven.

Also uneven were the applause for the men vs. the women. I suppose that’s to be expected given that the SYTYCD live audience is jam packed with squeeing teens, but still. Go back and listen to the explosion of applause for my little Kent and compare that too that smattering of golf claps for Melinda. I think the pressure is on the boys tonight. The judges are going to be looking to out a guy to keep the ladies in the competition.

AdeChicke & Lauren
Hip Hop by Dave Scott
If the judges were looking for a little bit more personality from AdeChicke this week, then he certainly delivered.  Although I was bit nervous for Ade at the beginning, it wasn’t long before he was strutting across the stage with all the confidence of a real hip hop dancer.  I’ve always been a fan of Dave Scott’s smooth hip hop and he designed a routine tonight that blended some tough hits with some fluid transitions. Despite Lauren’s shirt busting open, I think all eyes were on Ade, not only for his fantastic dancing but the character he brought alive tonight.

The Judges: Nigel went on and on with praise. Mia gave it a big YAY. Shankman shrieked and was on his feet. All around great news for AdeChicke tonight.

Ashley & Ade
Contemporary by Dee Caspary
Interesting. The judges made such a big deal last week about Ashley only dancing in her own style to date, that I thought for sure she would not be dancing Contemporary this week.  In fact, I thought the producers would have intervened if she in fact did choose that genre.  But I guess not, because she’s back at it this week.

And thank God she is!  Damn that was a powerful performance.  Welcome to the SYTYCD family Dee Caspary. If that’s what you’ve got packed in your luggage, then feel free to settle in and stay awhile.  The choreography had so many levels and it was so explosive, but it was the energy, technique and passion of Ashley and Ade that made it come alive.  That was superb! Um, did you see that Mission: Impossible move where Ash was headed towards the floor but Ade suspended her seemingly in mid-air?  Crazy!

The Judges: Nigel thought it was Ashely’s finest performance and said she was a different dancer than she had been the previous two weeks. Mia called the performance extraordinary. She said that Ashley was her favorite and cut a above the female dancers. The Shankman was a little choked up and said that it was one of the best Contemporary female performances he’s seen across all the seasons.  Well, that’s some great praise for Ash this week.

SMALLVILLE Welcomes Back John Schneider

June 30, 2010 by
Filed under #1 featured, Smallville, TV News

SMALLVILLE will be starting its final season when the series returns on September 24…which means some former fan favorites will be popping back in.

First up? Original cast member John Schneider will be appearing, The CW has confirmed to GIVE ME MY REMOTE.

The network was mum on how many episodes he’ll be back for, but IGN is reporting Schneider will show up in the season 10 premiere and will be in at least one additional hour.

Considering Schneider’s Jonathon Kent was killed off back in season 5, his reappearance is bound to cause some drama for his son, Clark.

Still, we’re thrilled that fans will get the chance to see Schneider reprise his former role before we have to say goodbye.

Who else would you like to see pop back in before SMALLVILLE signs off for good?

Filed under #1 featured, Party Down, TV News

So STARZ announced the cancelation of original comedy series PARTY DOWN this morning, which isn’t a huge surprise considering its dismal ratings, but it still sucks for those who bothered to tune in and became attached to the very funny show.

Sighhhh.

It’s heartbreaking when solid work doesn’t equal success. A sizable audience was never reached by PD, but it was still beloved by many and we figured we should listen as a few of them speak their minds today…

ShmittenKitten‎: They cancelled Party Down? WTF x a million. Nooooooooooo! #partydown

andygreenwald‎: RT @CKlosterman: The fact that Starz just canceled PARTY DOWN makes me want to blow up my TV, followed by the entire state of California.

taporsnapradio‎: RT @MichaelDavSmith: Very sad that Party Down was canceled. Some great shows never find an audience. And yet Two and a Half Men thrives.

keithcalder‎: I feel responsible for Party Down being cancelled. It’s one of those shows I kept meaning to watch, but never got around to.

Ah, that last one just says it all, no?

Thoughts on LOUIE?

June 30, 2010 by
Filed under #1 featured, Louis CK

As I mentioned yesterday, comedian Louis CK is unique. And perhaps, on TV, he’s an acquired taste.

His new show, LOUIE, on FX is a bit odd at times, sure. But do you agree that there may be promise? Or do you just think it’s sh-t?

Comments Off on Neil Patrick Harris, Eva Longoria, Jimmy Kimmel: TV Tweets of the Past 24 Hours

Every day, GIVE ME MY REMOTE scours the web to find the best TV-related tweets of the past 24 hours, so you can enjoy them all with just one easy click.

Occasionally something newsworthy will slip in here, but you know, not often…

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER’s Neil Patrick Harris is living dangerously during his hiatus: @ActuallyNPH: Went to a trendy gay beach in Mykonos called Elia. Lots of posturing, lots of exposed aged wieners. It was all rather intimidating.

Gaby Solis and Cameron are friends?! Friends who go on holiday together?!: @EvaLongoria: Me and @jenmorrisonlive in Venice!! I love vacation! http://fb.me/CGMwJOwK

Jimmy Kimmel is threatening us, because Oprah insists on keeping a wretched GREY’S ANATOMY term alive: @jimmykimmel: if Oprah continues to use the (horrible) word “vajayjay”, I have no choice but to call mine the “Vajizzler”

THE OFFICE star Mindy Kaling has some advice for the youngsters out there: @mindykaling: Kids, don’t peak early. It is better to be overlooked in high school.

MODERN FAMILY’s Eric Stonestreet is man enough to admit his weakness. Wait, you sure you’re not gay, dude?: @ericstonestreet: I don’t care what anybody thinks. I’m addicted to Pretty Little Liars.

SUPERNATURAL’s Jim Beaver is heading back to work: @jumblejim: In Vancouver. SPN season 6 starts tomorrow with episode 4 (!) w/Jensen Ackles directing. I WON’T tweet details, so don’t ask! It’s great!

THE WIRE Project: Season 1, Disc 1

Welcome to The Wire Project. Over the next five weeks, I hope that the GMMR community will explore the streets of Baltimore in a unique way, enhancing the viewing experience for one another. My goal is to make this project feel like a book club, with insights and opinions expressed with civility and good humor.

Each week, I’ll spend a little time chatting with my friend Heather to kick start the conversation.  We’ll do our best to hit on the big themes and events of each week’s episodes.  This is a complex show, so your favorite storylines, characters, and scenes may be wildly different from ours.  That’s fantastic!   With your participation, this discussion will be ripe with new ideas all summer.

A quick favor to ask before we get rolling:  Since this is an interactive project, I would also welcome your feedback about how we introduce each group of episodes.  If you would like more emphasis on plot, characters, etc., please include those in the comments section.  We will do our best to make this satisfying for everyone.

Without further adieu, here is our take on Episodes 1.1 to 1.3.

Erik: How did you get talked into revisiting The Wire?

Heather: I feel like I’m the only person on earth who hasn’t seen it and had my life changed by it.

E: You’re not alone, believe me.

H: Every critic I read had it on their list as best show of the decade at the end of last year. Basically, I feel left out.

E: As you know, I’m a picky person. When every sports columnist, radio host, and comedian I enjoy comments on the greatness of this show, I felt like the kid in class who didn’t get the joke.

H: Exactly! But that leads to the problem of “is this thing over-hyped?” How can we possibly go into this with reasonable expectations?

“We’ve always been big fans of the show and grew up watching the original cast,” Kim wrote on her blog. “So this is a real honor to have the opportunity to guest star on the show.”

CASTLE: Summer Promo Brings the Fun

June 29, 2010 by

Look, we were a little annoyed with ABC’s marketing department for spoiling the “Justin has a girlfriend!” reveal on THE BACHELORETTE. Despite the internet blogs that had revealed the info months back, ABC had done a great job of initially keeping the dude’s identity on the DL. Then suddenly, bam, in your face.

But after seeing this amazing CASTLE promo? Yeah, we’re pretty much willing to forgive.

In the 30 second spot, CASTLE stars Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic are semi-in-character as they spout off series-appropriate words which describe the show and, quite often, their characters’ relationship. It’s fun, flirty and flashy, much like the show itself.

Check it out…

We wish more networks were this creative with their rerun promotion. Well done, Alphabet Net.

THE BACHELORETTE WTF Moment of the Week: Justin Edition

June 29, 2010 by
Filed under #1 featured, The Bachelorette

Comments Off on THE BACHELORETTE WTF Moment of the Week: Justin Edition

As you may have already read, I managed to stay spoiler-free on which BACHELORETTE contestant was hiding a girlfriend at home all season… at least until an ABC promo spoiled it mid-morning yesterday (June 28). But my suspicions about it being Justin were correct, so there was some satisfaction in that.

Yes, Justin has a girlfriend. Or, possibly, multiple girlfriends. We never got total clarity on how many ladies he’s actually involved with aside from Ali, but there was at least one: A gal named Jessica.

Ah, Jessica.

Jess, Justin’s girlfriend of two years, was apparently feeling a bit guilty about sending her boyfriend off to get himself famous as a contestant on the show. And I guess she was also feeling upset after finding out that he was seeing some other chick behind her back too.

So, after one of Justin’s regular phone calls from the BACHELORETTE set — yes, he was allegedly calling her regularly during the filming of the show — Jessica snapped and contacted THE BACHELORETTE producers, telling them them about his whole scheme to use the show for fame.

Host Chris Harrison was tasked with informing Ali that Jessie — her former competitor on THE BACHELOR — was about to break some bad news to her.
