2011 Golden Globes – Team GMMR Picks Our Favorites

January 16, 2011 by

Listen, I like Piper Perabo just as much as anyone else, but any press association that regards her among the nominees for Best Actress in a TV Drama can’t be taken that seriously.  The Hollywood Foreign Press always puts on a good show though, and with Ricky Gervais at the helm once again, I’m expecting one hell of a party.

The recognition of TV and movies in one ceremony makes The Golden Globes my favorite awards show to watch. That and the fact that the audience is given booze throughout…you just never know what’s going to happen.

Since we’re all about TV here at GIVE ME MY REMOTE, we thought we’d share who we would like to see take the stage and receive their globe of gold on Sunday night. We might not always choose the winners, but we’ve got our favorites.

Best Television Series – Drama

  • Boardwalk Empire (HBO)
  • Dexter (SHOWTIME)
  • The Good Wife (CBS)
  • Mad Men (AMC)
  • The Walking Dead (AMC)

KATH: Tough call. I’m really torn.  Having recently caught up on both DEXTER and THE GOOD WIFE, I now understand why they’ve received such rave reviews.  But then there’s MAD MEN who had a phenomenal season.  But if I can choose one and only one, I’m going to go with THE GOOD WIFE. Fantastic acting all around and completely engrossing story telling every single week.

MARISA: While I’m still bummed about LOST and FRINGE being excluded in this category, I’m all about DEXTER taking home the win. In the wake of Rita’s untimely death, the show was forced to radically changed things up and succeeded. The pairing of Dexter and Lumen was a pleasant surprise and the unlikely duo brought a new life to the series.

KORBI: MAD MEN. MAD MEN. MAD MEN. Sure, the AMC series has gotten more than its fair share of awards recognition over the last few years, but it has deserved every last accolade, and this past season was just as good — if not better — than anything they’ve done before.

Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series – Drama

  • Julianna Margulies – The Good Wife (CBS)
  • Elisabeth Moss – Mad Men (AMC)
  • Piper Perabo – Covert Affairs (USA NETWORK)
  • Katey Sagal – Sons Of Anarchy (FX)
  • Kyra Sedgwick – The Closer (TNT)

KATH: As you may have guessed, no, my vote is not going to Piper Perabo. For me it was down to two ladies – Julianna Margulies consistently brings it in her role as Alicia Florrick, but Elisabeth Moss gave the single most powerful performance of the year, in my opinion, during the episode “The Suitcase”. But I’ve got to go with my gut on this one and give it to Julianna Margulies.

MARISA: While I’m guessing Elisabeth Moss will take home the prize, I’m with Kath in rooting for Julianna Margulies. Yes, she won last year, but can anyone argue the depth Margulies brings to Alicia? However, I do adore Katey Sagal, and would not be disappointed if she won.

KORBI: I’m cool with Katey Sagal or Elisabeth Moss taking this one home. Sagal was overlooked for Emmy nominations last year, so she could use some love for her outstanding work. But Moss is so damn good on MAD MEN, it’s hard to take your eyes off her when she’s in a scene and that’s saying a lot given the show’s major players.

Best Performance by an Actor In A Television Series – Drama

  • Steve Buscemi – Boardwalk Empire (HBO)
  • Bryan Cranston – Breaking Bad (AMC)
  • Michael C. Hall – Dexter (SHOWTIME)
  • Jon Hamm – Mad Men (AMC)
  • Hugh Laurie – House (FOX)

KATH: I don’t watching BOARDWALK EMPIRE or BREAKING BAD but I’m always hearing raves for the performances of both Buscemi and Cranston. But now understanding the phenom that is DEXTER, I really want Michael C. Hall walking up on that stage Sunday. I won’t hate it if another guy is up there, but I’m pulling for Harrison’s daddy.

MARISA: Ooh, a tough category. Michael C. Hall, Bryan Cranston or Hugh Laurie? I’m behind on BREAKING BAD, but there is no denying that Cranston is phenomenal. However, based on the past year’s work, I’d have to give the edge to Hall over Laurie. As Dexter dealt with grief over losing Rita and connecting with Lumen, viewers saw him struggle with his humanity more than ever before. Laurie was fantastic as House faced his sobriety — and a new relationship with Cuddy — head-on, but I’m hoping Michael C. Hall repeats his victory.

KORBI: Love all these dudes. Any one of them is worthy. But let’s give it to Hugh Laurie. His work in the season finale last year? I mean, come on. HOUSE has been on forever and a day, but he’s still bringing it.

Best Television Series – Comedy Or Musical

  • 30 Rock (NBC)
  • The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
  • The Big C (SHOWTIME)
  • Glee (FOX)
  • Modern Family (ABC)
  • Nurse Jackie (SHOWTIME)

KATH: Whoa, reality check.  THE OFFICE didn’t even make the cut. Not sure how I feel about that, especially given how really fantastic this season has been.  I know THE OFFICE has been a little wonky the past few years, but I have to believe it is funnier than THE BIG C. But I’m supposed to be talking about the shows that stand a chance, so my vote goes to MODERN FAMILY.  I’ll actually be bummed if GLEE takes home the award. I never miss an episode, but someone has got to send the message to Ryan Murphy and his writing staff that some of us actually like some storyline and plot with our musical numbers.

MARISA: MODERN FAMILY. Yes, GLEE could repeat their win, but in terms of series quality, MODERN FAMILY is hands-down the better series. But much love to THE BIG BANG THEORY for finally getting recognized.

KORBI: MODERN FAMILY. Enough said.

Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series – Comedy Or Musical

  • Toni Collette – United States Of Tara (SHOWTIME)
  • Edie Falco – Nurse Jackie (SHOWTIME)
  • Tina Fey – 30 Rock (NBC)
  • Laura Linney – The Big C (SHOWTIME)
  • Lea Michele – Glee (FOX)

KATH: Since we’re talking about an individual here, I’m going to go with Lea Michele. Love her or hate her, or just love to hate her, she brings so much to the role of Rachel Berry.

MARISA: What an incredibly strong group of women. While it’s a bit unfair to pit the material Edie Falco has to work with what Lea Michele does (can we please make some sort of hybrid/dramedy category?), Toni Collette is who I’m rooting for. Tara (and her multiple personalities) is one of the most complex characters on television and it is truly a joy to watch her work.

KORBI: An embarrassment of talent riches in this category. These chicks kill it, every time. But I’m going with Falco. Remember when she was Carmela Soprano? Yeah, I mean, as iconic as that role was, she’s so good as Nurse Jackie, I completely forget that the same actress is responsible for both roles. God bless her.

Best Performance by an Actor In A Television Series – Comedy Or Musical

  • Alec Baldwin – 30 Rock (NBC)
  • Steve Carell – The Office (NBC)
  • Thomas Jane – Hung (HBO)
  • Matthew Morrison – Glee (FOX)
  • Jim Parsons – The Big Bang Theory (CBS)

KATH: Oh boy. Having to choose between two of my favorite TV actors, Steve Carell and Jim Parsons. What’s a girl to do.  I’m going to say that I want Steve Carell to walk home with the Golden Globe.  Let’s show Michael Scott a little love before he’s gone from this list.

MARISA: One of the best decisions I made in the past 13 months was picking up THE BIG BANG THEORY. Jim Parsons is brilliant as Sheldon, and I truly hope he follows up his recent Emmy win with a Golden Globe victory.

KORBI: Jim Parsons. Love me some Sheldon.

Best Mini-Series Or Motion Picture Made for Television

  • Carlos (Sundance C)
  • The Pacific (HBO)
  • Pillars Of The Earth (STARZ)
  • Temple Grandin (HBO)
  • You Don’t Know Jack (HBO)

KATH: Not much a mini-series or made for TV fan. Just bummed ‘The Craigslist Killer’ didn’t make the cut. (Kidding, of course).  I guess I’d like to see TEMPLE GRANDIN win big. I saw the original documentary on Temple’s life and the woman is just fantastic.

MARISA: Like Kath, I’m not much of a mini-series or TV movie viewer, but I have heard wonderful things about many of these movies. I’d also pick TEMPLE GRANDIN, because Claire Danes embodied Temple so well.

Best Performance by an Actress In A Mini-series or Motion Picture Made for Television

  • Hayley Atwell – Pillars Of The Earth (STARZ)
  • Claire Danes – Temple Grandin (HBO)
  • Judi Dench – Return To Cranford
  • Romola Garai – Emma
  • Jennifer Love Hewitt – The Client List

KATH: See note above.  How about for this category I just saw anyone but Jennifer Love Hewitt.

MARISA: Claire Danes. But while I haven’t seen RETURN TO CRANFORD, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Judi Dench take home a prize.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

  • Idris Elba – Luther
  • Ian McShane – Pillars Of The Earth (STARZ)
  • Al Pacino – You Don’t Know Jack (HBO)
  • Dennis Quaid – The Special Relationship
  • Edgar Ramirez – Carlos (Sundance C)

KATH: Eenie meenie miney moe, Idris Elba‘s the way to go.

MARISA: I haven’t seen any of these (bad Marisa!), but HBO + Al Pacino + Kevorkian = Globe win, right?

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

  • Hope Davis – The Special Relationship
  • Jane Lynch – Glee (FOX)
  • Kelly MacDonald – Boardwalk Empire (HBO)
  • Julia Stiles – Dexter (SHOWTIME)
  • Sofia Vergara – Modern Family (ABC)

KATH: Tough category for me.  Sofia, Julia or Jane? I’m going to go with Julia Stiles on this one. Before her turn as Lumen on this season of DEXTER, I really didn’t think much of her acting skills. She really showed me something.

MARISA: Sofia Vergara and Julia Stiles knocked it out of the park this year with roles that finally showed the extent of their talent, but Jane Lynch as Sue has been one of GLEE’s consistent highlights. Heck, she deserves the Globe for her take on “Vogue” alone.

KORBI: Julia Stiles. Way to bust back into the business and show everyone what you’re made of.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

  • Scott Caan – Hawaii Five-O
  • Chris Colfer – Glee (FOX)
  • Chris Noth – The Good Wife (CBS)
  • Eric Stonestreet – Modern Family (ABC)
  • David Strathairn – Temple Grandin (HBO)

KATH: No doubt about this one…I want to see Chris Colfer win this award! Great competition for sure, but there are few people I like watching on my TV each week more than Colfer.

MARISA: Like Kath, I’m all about Chris Colfer winning this category. Fantastic nominees, but no nominee moves me as much as Colfer does.

KORBI: Stonestreet, yo. What would MODERN FAMILY be without him? He’s good for huge laughs every week and he should be recognized for that.

Now it’s time for you to talk.

Who do you want to see walking away a winner tonight?

Any of the above arguments rubbing you the wrong way?

Think I have the most picks in common with Korbi. I agree this will be a big year for MAD MEN.

But I think that The Golden Globes might through The Walking Dead a bone. If they won, no doubt Mad Men will win the Emmy for Best Drama.

I think The Walking Dead might sneak in there as the shocker for the awards. GG loves to award the newbie, and that show got a lot of people talking. So if there is an upset, I think it might be that one. Otherwise, I’m oddly not attached to any one particular nominee. Though I’m still not sure that The Tourist was meant to be a comedy. 😉

Where is Fringe, Anna Torv and John Noble. They deserve recognition and yet get snubbed again.

I wish Breaking Bad were nominated for Best Drama, but hey, like Kath said, these are the awards that nominated Piper Perabo for Best Actress. I’d like to see Mad Men take home the award out of these choices, though. For me, it’s a toss-up between Jon Hamm and Bryan Cranston for Best Actor.

Also, I really need to catch up on The Good Wife – I’ve heard nothing but good things.

I really hope it’s a big night for Mad Men. After 4 years, drama series tend to slip into the absurd or dip in quality. Mad Men hasn’t and I really think they should be awarded for it. Glee on the other hand, has dipped in quality. Hopefully they’ll win nothing, so Ryan Murphy will get the hint that things need to improve.

Are any of you going to live blog the Golden Globes?

I really need Chris Colfer to win. He’s the best thing about GLEE, in my opinion, so I hope the show gets that message.

Luke, I’ll be live-blogging the event.
