THE OFFICE: John Krasinski, Angela Kinsey and Brian Baumgartner Tease The Second Half of Season 7
January 27, 2011 by Marisa Roffman
Michael Scott, Hollywood filmmaker?
It’s a scary thought, but THE OFFICE will reveal in an upcoming episode that Michael has finally made his beloved script, THREAT LEVEL MIDNIGHT.
When I recently caught up with series stars John Krasinski (Jim), Angela Kinsey (Angela) and Brian Baumgartner (Kevin), they dished on that, potential babies, the return of Roy and Karen and the possibility of Krasinski’s wife, Emily Blunt, appearing on the show.
Plus, the awesome cast had some special words for Give Me My Remote readers and our very own Kath Skerry…
Hey guys, how are things going?
John Krasinski: Please tell everybody on that site how thankful we are for all that you’ve done for us. Seriously. You guys have been so incredibly supportive.
Angela Kinsey: Seriously.
JK: And hands down we attribute a lot of our success to you guys, so we really appreciate it.
AK: [Give Me My Remote] started a whole buzz about us and people talking about the show.
JK: And Kath is….I mean, it’s Kath. She’s the best.
She’s amazing, let’s be honest. Kath is pretty darn awesome. So let’s talk about THE OFFICE, which is also pretty darn amazing —
JK: [joking] I just want to point out that we were talking about Kath and then you said we should move on and talk about THE OFFICE and I think that’s rude.
Ha! I apologize.
JK: [Into my tape recorder] Just for the record, Kath, I didn’t say that.
I think she’ll forgive me if I get some good OFFICE scoop from you guys.
JK: Alright, great.
Awesome. Let’s talk about THE OFFICE. First of all, Angela and Dwight and a baby? What’s the status on that?
Angela Kinsey: Oh, well, I have a new fella. I know I have a new boyfriend, I’m real excited. He’s a real upstanding citizen and makes me feel special. He’s a senator! And we’re gonna see that unfold a little bit. And I also heard that I get to hire an intern for the accounting department, so…
Oh no…
AK: I know. I can’t wait. I get to hire an intern for the accounting department! That’s what they told me, and I’m telling people!
We won’t tell anyone you told.
JK: You could almost see the words shoot out of [Angela’s] mouth.
AK: They don’t tell me much for a reason.
What can you tell me about this spring? Is it true Roy and Karen are coming back for an episode?
JK: They are back. This is — in my opinion — the funniest episode we’ve had. I think it might be my favorite.
AK: It’s so good!
JK: I haven’t seen it all together yet.
AK: Reading it was so much fun.
JK: It’s the greatest idea, and for the fans it will be very, very funny. For the people who have been watching us from the beginning, it’s really a tribute to them because we bring back pretty much everybody who’s been on the show. And basically, the script we read in season three, THREAT LEVEL MIDNIGHT, finally got made.
Oh my God.
JK: And so Michael’s been shooting this for about eight years and we’re all in it, and it’s all our older selves and it’s pretty amazing.
Amazing? Or super awkward?
JK: The most awkward disaster of a movie you have ever seen, and yet amazing.
Michael Scott going Hollywood — I feel like that’s a disaster waiting to happen.
JK: It’s actually perfect. And it’s exciting because when he comes in and announces that he finally did the movie, I couldn’t hide the fact that—I couldn’t be a character…I, John Krasinski, was very excited when he made that announcement, because I knew that was what the episode’s going to be about and it’s fantastic. It’ll be great.
John, I heard that your wife, Emily Blunt, said she wants to be on the show. Is that going to happen?
JK: I think she said she wants to be. I don’t have enough clout to get her on the show, which I feel really bad about, but I told her that if she gets on that would be fun. I don’t know, I don’t think she’s gonna be on the show. Maybe, someday.
I mean, she could be the new boss. Everyone is speculating who it could be…
JK: She could be the new boss, and then we could go really meta and I could break up with Pam and get married to a fictitious person [whom Emily would play].
I’m pretty sure the fans would have a riot at that point.
JK: Yeah, and I’d die.
Everyone’s asking about Steve Carell (Michael) leaving, but how would you guys like to see him leave the show?
Brian Baumgartner: Hmmm. It’s a slightly awkward question because we kind of know now, at this point, how it’s going to play out. And I have to tell you, in the conversations we’ve had since we’ve been back in the new year, everybody’s really excited. I feel like we have an opportunity with the talent that we have…And I was talking to somebody yesterday about it just being a boomerang. You know, we’ve been going on this trajectory, and I think that it’s going to be a change in direction and that there’s gonna be just a new momentum and energy and we have this real opportunity to let it just take off again in this new direction, and I think that’s really exciting.
And the next six to eight months with him leaving is gonna be exciting — how we go about, not even replacing him, but how the office changes and the dynamic changes with him leaving. Greg Daniels, our executive producer, said a really great thing: that we shouldn’t be talking about who’s going to replace Steve, but how is THE OFFICE going to replace Michael Scott? And I feel like that’s really the challenge that the writers have been looking at and brought to us. And I think it’s just a really exciting opportunity, with the talent that we have there, and how the writers have done an amazing job of changing the dynamic in the past. It’s gonna be great.
Anything anyone would like to add to that?
JK: No, it’s so perfect. I mean, I’ve been a broken record all these years because it’s so true that the best thing about our show is how real it can be. And so my favorite moments in the show are when it’s very real, and I’m so proud that Steve’s leaving will be an incredibly honest moment for a character that I think everyone can relate to. And yes, there will definitely be funny moments to it, but it’s not overly sentimental, it’s not overly comedic, it’s a man losing the one thing he’s loved more than anything else. And it’s genuine, and you’ll feel it, and it’s very specific to him and I’m really so proud of it. I’m really so proud of the show this year, I think this is the best year we’ve had in a long time.

Thanks for the interview, Marisa! The Client is one of my favorite episodes so I can’t wait to see Threat Level Midnight come to life. Hope he fixed that Dwigt typo.. 😉
Would have loved to hear this interview. Those three are always so great.
Very cool! Great interview!
Can’t help but notice JK saying “it’s a man losing the one thing he’s loved more than anything else”…his job? his girl? What’s going to happen?! 🙂
LOVED this interview, Marisa. For some reason I keep reading it over and over and over and over again 🙂
Sara – I did hear the audio of this interview and it wouldn’t be suitable for posting. It was SO loud at that party, I don’t even know how Marisa was able to play back the recording to transcribe the conversation.
@Kath: Glad you enjoyed it! Never wanted to beam you over to an event more than during this convo!
@Sara: I REALLY wish I could have gotten them on camera for you guys, but like Kath mentioned, the party was *so* loud that it’s a minor miracle the audio was able to be transcribed. Hopefully next time we’ll be able to get some video!
