Tonight’s TV Spotlight…Monday, January 17, 2011

Welcome back, Monday!

Yes, almost all of our Monday night favorites return tonight with brand new episodes. And as an added bonus (if you can call it that), we’ve got a few new shows to check out, too. Of course this sounds good in theory, but in practice it’s a complete nightmare. There is just too much to watch in the 8pm hour.  Am I really supposed to choose between HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, CHUCK and PRETTY LITTLE LIARS? Sadly, yes. Life is so cruel sometimes.

As for those new shows, NBC brings us Kathy Bates as the star of HARRY’S LAW and over on Syfy is the long-awaited premiere of the U.S. version of BEING HUMAN. Vampires, werewolves and ghosts…oh my! But it’s not the only British remake premiering tonight. MTV has the premiere of SKINS. Um, it’s not for anyone younger than the girls on 16 AND PREGNANT…got it?

Check out some of the highlights from tonight’s TV lineup, and let’s have a chat about what you are going to watch when and how. More of my thoughts down below.

Chuck | 8pm on NBC
“Chuck Versus the Balcony”
Chuck embarks on two secret quests. As he tries to locate a nano-chip in the vineyards of France, he also attempts to stealthily concoct a romantic getaway for Sarah. Meanwhile, Lester pesters Big Mike to help him sort out his troubled love life. [GMMR: It almost feels like a brand new season of CHUCK. It’s been so long. Can’t wait to have Chuck, Sarah, Casey and the gang back tonight. Are you with me?!]

How I Met Your Mother | 8pm on CBS
“Last Words”
The friends travel to Minnesota to be there for Marshall as he buries his father. Ted and Barney try anything to make Marshall laugh. Marshall runs into an old nemesis from high school.

House | 8pm on Fox
“Larger than Life”
After saving a stranger who fell onto subway tracks, a man suddenly collapses despite appearing to be unscathed; House tries to avoid a dinner with Cuddy and her opinionated mother (Candice Bergen). [GMMR: Sad that I have had to give up on HOUSE this year. Can’t wait to play catch up this summer. Love this show, but Monday’s are just too nasty.]

Pretty Little Liars | 8pm on ABC Family
“Frenemies”

“A” tempts Hanna to return to her old criminal ways. Meanwhile, Noel continues to go after Ezra; Emily’s mother stops pretending to accept Maya; Spencer adjusts to her sister’s marriage; and the girls get some surprising assistance.

So much more after the jump…keep reading.

GOLDEN GLOBES 2011 Video: Ricky Gervais Roasts Charlie Sheen, Gay Scientologists

Charlie Sheen, some closeted gay Scientologists and the Depp/Jolie box office stinker, THE TOURIST.

All three were targets during Ricky Gervais’ opening monologue at The Golden Globes this evening.

Mean-spirited, as Robert Downey Jr. contended? Or damn hilarious?

GLEE’s Chris Colfer Wins Golden Globe! (Video)

Chris Colfer, star of GLEE, took home the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor tonight.  The young star looked absolutely floored as his name was read. He took to the stage and delivered a witty and emotional speech which included a message to those who bully kids like those featured on GLEE.

Watch Chris Colfer’s Golden Globes speech and just try not to smile.

So proud of Chris! More than any other nominee tonight, I was hoping Chris would win. His performance as Kurt Hummel is simply spectacular. I’ve watch his name being read and his speech about 10 times already tonight and I cry every time.

We love you, Chris!

2011 Golden Globes – Team GMMR Picks Our Favorites

January 16, 2011 by

Listen, I like Piper Perabo just as much as anyone else, but any press association that regards her among the nominees for Best Actress in a TV Drama can’t be taken that seriously.  The Hollywood Foreign Press always puts on a good show though, and with Ricky Gervais at the helm once again, I’m expecting one hell of a party.

The recognition of TV and movies in one ceremony makes The Golden Globes my favorite awards show to watch. That and the fact that the audience is given booze throughout…you just never know what’s going to happen.

Since we’re all about TV here at GIVE ME MY REMOTE, we thought we’d share who we would like to see take the stage and receive their globe of gold on Sunday night. We might not always choose the winners, but we’ve got our favorites.

SMALLVILLE Producer Brian Peterson: ‘The door is open’ for Michael Rosenbaum to return

January 15, 2011 by

As SMALLVILLE winds down its final season, a big question looming over the show is what role — if any — Lex Luthor will play.

Lex made clones of himself before he allegedly died in an explosion, and the older and younger versions of the character have played a vital role in the tenth year. But will original series star Michael Rosenbaum (Lex) show up in the final hours of the series?

Apparently Rosenbaum heard some speculation about it, because he took to Twitter to debunk the rumors.

BIG LOVE Is Back, Baby

Comments Off on BIG LOVE Is Back, Baby

BIG LOVE is back this Sunday… in more ways than one.

Though the fourth season of the acclaimed HBO series earned quite a bit of criticism for a few subplots that seemed to explode into absurdity toward the end of its run, this weekend you’ll find that the show has returned to the quiet (yet always impactful) drama longtime fans adore it for.

Sticking with the new theme song that was introduced last year — which is appropriate, as the characters seem more confused than ever about their path and their place in life — BIG LOVE season 5 opens with Bill and his three wives camping out with their youngest kids, striving to portray a sense of calm after what they’ve been through: a clear storm.

We learn that, since Bill won election to the state Senate and came out publicly as a polygamist, much has transpired — though nothing we couldn’t have anticipated: the family has been splashed across the tabloids and the consequences of their big reveal is more than just difficult.

Margene is an emotional mess and only gets worse when she’s fired from her job at the home shopping network.

Barb — who has sent her youngest daughter Teeny away to live with her eldest Sarah, so she can enjoy a normal existence — has opted to stay in the marriage but continues to struggle with the revelation that she doesn’t need Bill anymore.

Nicki, who is now free to live out in the open as Bill’s wife, is deeply angry with Barb who covertly attempted to derail Bill’s campaign last season and she flies off the deep end when one of her boys is beat up at school because of the family’s beliefs.

Meanwhile, Bill is dealing with aggressive anger from not only his campaign volunteers and employees at Cost Plus, but from Don as well.

In the midst of this mess, however, there are still several light moments — best of all, the subtle humor that comes from the passive aggression between Nicki and Barb.

But in addition to everything that’s going on with the four main characters, there are equally compelling storylines this year coming from the supporting players, including Bill’s mom Lois, Nicki’s mom Adaleen, Nicki’s long-lost daughter Cara Lynn, and Nicki’s closeted compound-bound brother Alby, who has really lost it since the tragic suicide of his lover last season.

This will be the final season of BIG LOVE, friends, but as a fan, I’m pleased to say that it’s off to a more than satisfactory start… which will just make it all the more difficult to say goodbye to this spring. Sigh…

BIG LOVE season 5 debuts Sunday, January 16th at 9PM on HBO. Will you watch?

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER: Is John Lithgow Barney’s Dad?

January 14, 2011 by
Filed under HIMYM, How I Met Your Mother, TV News

From serial killer to Stinson’s pop?

According to TVLine.com, acting legend John Lithgow (DEXTER, THIRD ROCK FROM THE SUN) is nearing a deal to play Barney’s father on HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER.

CBS would not confirm the possible casting at this time, but sources close to the show say there is a quiet excitement building about Lithgow appearing on HIMYM.

Word is, as of now, Lithgow’s deal would be for just one episode.

But Lithgow does seem like a kick ass choice to play the Barnacle’s dad, no? Even if the last time we saw him onscreen, he was killing people as a hobby? I mean, the man is a pro and no stranger to comedy.

Plus, it’s about time that Barney (Neil Patrick Harris), who has been wondering about the identity of his biological father for several seasons now, came face to face with the man who spawned him, no?

Any thoughts?

Geeks, rejoice! The wondrously referential NBC comedy COMMUNITY announced at TCA that an upcoming episode will be devoted to the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. In fact, the entire episode will consist of the study group sitting at their usual table, playing the game.

That may not sound like much to COMMUNITY outsiders, but knowing the people responsible for the show, they’re sure to do some things stylistically to make the episode a lot more interesting.
