GLEE’s Dot Marie Jones Talks Coach Bieste
March 8, 2011 by Marisa Roffman
GIVE ME MY REMOTE got some one-on-one time with the one and only Dot Marie Jones, who joined the GLEE cast this season to play the no-nonsense, yet surprisingly sensitive Coach Bieste.
What’s coming up for the character?
Jones fills us in…
Let’s talk Coach Bieste!
Dot Marie Jones: It’s a pleasure and a honor to play her. I am just so honored, because for me, I’ve always played the big tough woman or the mom or the mean this or the mean that. To get to play vulnerable where I actually cry is… [sighs happily]
That’s fantastic. What can you tease about what’s coming up for Coach Bieste?
DMJ: I don’t know what’s coming up, because they write as we go, basically. The episode that airs Tuesday — it’s called “Sexy” — and Gwyenth Paltrow is back and I got like one scene in that.
Have you filmed anything beyond that?
DMJ: No. I’m not in the episode after that.
Well that’s disappointing. What would you like to have happen for your character this year?
DMJ: I’d love to see Coach Bieste coach the basketball [team] as well as the baseball stuff coming up. I know we only have like six episodes left to shoot.
It would make sense for her to be the coach of the baseball team since it seems the school only has one coach.
DMJ: I grew up in a small town and all our [high school] coaches coached every [sport].
Do you think Coach Bieste could get a love interest?
DMJ: I hope so.
After all, she did recently have her first kiss…
DMJ: That was one of my favorite episodes. That and the Christmas episode, those are my favorites.
You had some good material to work with in both episodes.
DMJ: I loved playing Santa and working with Heather [Morris (Brittany)]. Oh my God. She is amazing. She’s one of my favorites on the show.
Is there anyone you’d like to work with more?
DMJ: I’d like to work with the girls. I loved when the girls were playing football. Loved it. I love working with the boys, they’re all fantastic and all such sweethearts. But I’d like to work more with the girls.
And how about her relationship with Will? Would you like to see them team up to take on Sue?
DMJ: I would love that. I love where my relationship with Will has gone. I love that we’re buddies. I love that. I love that they went that route with that. I was a little nervous about doing the song that I did two weeks ago, but I felt so much more confident and relaxed because Matt [Morrison (Will)] was doing it with me.
That was a fun scene to watch. You guys let loose!
DMJ: It was so much fun. I’ve never sang before. To get to go to a recording booth and actually sing and record [a song]…never in my life did I think that was going to be happening.
GLEE is certainly changing what actors do on television.
DMJ: I’m just hoping it changes the way people think. I feel like there are so many messages in every episode that you hope you hit a handful.

I have been slowly losing interest in Glee this season, but Coach Bieste keeps pulling me back. She is a great addition to the cast, and I love how Dot Marie Jones portrays her. Thank you for the interview, Marisa.
They need to give Dot Marie more air time as she does a fantastic job with her character.
I simply LOVE Dot and Coach Beiste and I need Beite’s solos.
My daughter and I LOVE LOVE LOVE Coach Bieste! She has added so much to the show. Love that she is so vulnerable and real! Get her a man!!! She needs more air time
I LOVE Coach Beiste! She is such and a sweetheart, and she puts Sue in her place sometimes, which I really like. I have seen Dot Marie Jones in other shows where she DOES play the “mean character,” but I LOVE her in this role. She seems like such a wonderful person, and she has a wonderful role. =)
This is a lovely article. My husband and I are Glee hopefuls….. (hoping that we get back the intrigue/drama/twists that we saw in NipTuck and Glee Season 1) and Coach Beiste is one of the reasons we stick it out despite any interesting storyline. The characters of Coach Beiste, Burt Hummel, Blaine, … are real, touching, and needed. We miss wondering what’s going to happen next, and need suspense returned to the show. (Terri Schuester plotting revenge!) Dot should be pleased to know that her kindness is holding a show together (that really needs its teeth back).
I think Dot Marie Jones is a great fit to play Coach Bieste. Coach Bieste is a great character and wish we would see much more of her on the show. Sucks they don’t show her as much as we’d like. I hope that when season 3 of Glee rolls around that we will see her much more on screen.
I also love that she and Will are great buddies.
My Family and I Love Coach Bieste! It is such a great charachter! the more of her the better! I think Dot does such a great job she is my favorite!
I’d like to see an episode where she finds a misfit puppy, cleans it up, and having something in her life to care for leads her to meeting someone nice. She could be making comparisons between dog obedience class and discipline on the field, just the sort of thoughtful comments that would attract a special someone (an ex-military guy, perhaps?) Just a thought, because she’s too good to go to waste, all by herself.
Coach Bieste is a great character and Dot Marie does a superb job in portraying her! I want to see her get more screen time for sure! I would love it if her and Shue would sock it to Sue 😀
hey, I agree with the above post, that would be a kewl epi 😀
Love the idea of Coach finding a puppy. It could become the team mascot. Maybe something like the team coming together because Coach is down because the puppy is hurt/sick/abused and the team adopt the puppy as their mascot finally realizing that working together maybe with the Glee club as well will make them stronger therefore better players.
I love Dot & what she’s brought to the role and the show. My fav was her karaoke singing. I thing she’s onto something. More Coach Beiste please!!
I think Bieste is totally under used, I want to see More of THE Bieste on Glee she is the Bomb
I am a total “Senior Gleek”. Coach Bieste is such a wonderful addition to the show. Every show she appears in is a total hit with me.
I am so tired of seeing nothing but the “beautiful perfect” people on TV.” It is so refreshing to to see a show with “real people”. I didn’t see the first 2yrs so am in the process of netfliking all of the old episodes. More Coach Bieste please !!!
I’m loving Glee; I think Dot’s been an excellent addition to the cast. I agree with others who’d like to see much more of her. I am also glad she and Will have developed a trusting friendship. As Dot herself hopes Coach Bieste will have more screen time with the girls, I also would like to see her influence them positively (to help negate all that venom from Sue). It distresses me to hear people so easily disappointed by the second season. I’m still enjoying everything about Glee. It’s a real highlight in my life.
Dot is sweet, funny and brings so much HEART to Glee. I’m surprised that she is not a “regular” on this show. So enjoy her!!!! Imagine the variety of storylines Glee could go with-if they would just see what a treasure they have in her!
I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE Coach Beiste! Shes one of my absolute favorites. I love not only her character and what she brings to it, but the actress is so beautiful in her own, original way. I have a HUGE amount of respect for her. 🙂
