MODERN FAMILY Recap: ‘Boys’ Night’

March 24, 2011 by

I know it’s only been two weeks since the last MODERN FAMILY episode, but didn’t it seem like much longer? This week’s ep didn’t pack the emotional punch as the previous one — “Two Monkeys and a Panda” — which I think was probably good. It was perfectly funny, which was nice welcome after the break.

My favorite part was Cameron and Mitchell’s friends Pepper, Longinus and Crispin. It’s always fun to see Nathan Lane again and he fits in marvelously as the flighty and flamboyant Pepper. We welcomed the guys back during a boys’ night out where they were discussing first crushes and drinking margaritas with a shot of absinthe, which to me seemed like a disaster waiting to happen. I expected it to escalate to catastrophic proportions when Jay showed up to the bar they were at (to escape a symphony with Gloria and Manny, naturally), but surprisingly, everyone got along swimmingly! It was fun to see Jay embrace his “inner gay” with the guys, making jokes about singing in the shower and calling for more booze. How nice to have Jay and Mitchell interact because I feel like it doesn’t happen all that often – it was sweet Mitchell felt comfortable enough to open up about his first crush — Rob Lowe — after keeping that part of him a secret from Jay, something he thought he had to do after Jay walked in on him dancing in his room to Madonna when he was 12.

COMMUNITY Goes PULP FICTION

It’s Abed’s birthday this week on COMMUNITY, and what did you expect? An episode NOT full of references to cult fandom, wigs and gender-bending facial hair? If so, you will be sorely disappointed.

The rest of us, however, will be filled with joy and raucous laughter. This week’s episode pays homage to Quentin Tarantino’s cult classic, PULP FICTION, through the theme of Abed’s surprise birthday party, and things are bound to get out of hand. As to whether the episode will deal with yet another accidental drug overdose — something that happens to Uma Thurman’s character in the film — is yet to be seen.

Good day, TV friends.

Up for a quick look at what’s on tap this evening?

CBS has again preempted their regular Thursday night programming for NCAA basketball and The CW isn’t airing fresh eps, so the lineup isn’t as crowded as usual.

Which shows are you going to watch live, record for later, or skip altogether?

American Idol | 8pm on Fox
“1 of 11 Voted Off”
It’s that time of the week where one finalist will be eliminated from the competition. Tune in to see who faces the chopping block and is sent home after America’s vote is revealed LIVE.

Community | 8pm on NBC
“Critical Film Studies”
Capitalizing on Abed’s love of cinema and pop culture, Jeff plans a very special PULP FICTION style surprise party for Abed’s birthday. The tables turn, however, and while the study group awaits their arrival at a restaurant, Abed stages another dinner with an unsuspecting Jeff at another restaurant.

Perfect Couples | 8:30pm on NBC
“Perfect Lies”
Julia plans a quiet bachelorette party for Amy in Vancouver, however Amy has failed to tell her childhood friend that Julia is the maid of honor. At the bachelor party, Vance hopes to have a special moment with his friends while Dave tries to impress the guys with his camping skills. Rex and Leigh can’t bear to spend one night apart.

Grey’s Anatomy | 9pm on ABC
“This Is How We Do It”
Richard is desperate for Derek and Meredith to accept Adele into their Alzheimer’s trial, but will Adele stand in her own way? Meanwhile Mark and Arizona have conflicting ideas of the kind of baby shower Callie wants, Teddy is freaked out when Henry has another health complication — leaving them both a little exposed — and the competitiveness amongst the residents for the Chief Resident position is amplified when Richard receives the green light for his diabetes clinical trial. GMMR’s own Marisa Roffman talked to star Chyler Leigh about what’s coming up!

Raise your hand if you thought tonight was the season finale of TOP CHEF: ALL STARS? *Raises hand.* Surely I can’t be the only one. But nope, the finale is next week. That’s okay, though, because that gives us more Bahama drama.

In tonight’s quickfire challenge, the cheftesants must cook a one pot meal using pre-prepared foods like hot dogs and canned soups. In the elimination challenge, they must cook for a legendary chef (Wolfgang Puck, Morimoto, etc). Should be a nail-biter as one more chef goes home tonight.

Check out the clips below and, as always, let me know who you’re rooting for!

DANCING WITH THE STARS Season Premiere Recap

Comments Off on DANCING WITH THE STARS Season Premiere Recap

This season of Dancing with the Stars is missing something: the big tabloid/political figure that everyone would be talking about. Last season had Bristol Palin and seasons back it was Kate Gosselin causing all the drama. I have that feeling that Dancing with the Stars was really banking on Christine O’Donnell, but she backed out.

A cheesy winter joke started off this season with the regular pimping of the celebrities. At this point, DWTS  is a well-oiled machine and has only made minor tweaks, like improved dance floor visuals and the fish tank. I must admit that I love the opening credits this season. I don’t know why, when it’s basically the same as the past few seasons, but the performers look like they are having more fun.

The new celebrities made their way down the stairs, a few had some looks of nervousness, but sadly no one fell. As long as I get my “How you doin'” expression from Wendy, I think I’ll be good for the season.
