FRINGE Recap: ‘Lysergic Acid Diethylamide’

April 16, 2011 by

So, um, that just happened.

I mean, just when you think FRINGE can’t get more deliciously bizarre, the writers pull something like “Lysergic Acid Diethylamide.” What other show would be able to get away with things like that and have it be wholly believable?

Can you imagine what that pitch was like from the writers to the network and studio? “So, we’d like to have our characters take LSD and then jump into the mind of Olivia. Oh wait, in case that wasn’t weird enough for you, we’re going to want to animate the characters in Olivia’s mind for the majority of their journey.”

I feel the need to thank Fox for having the faith in this show to let these guys do something as insanely out-of-this-world as this hour was. So thank you Fox for letting FRINGE’s freak flag fly.

Let’s get down to what actually happened in the hour, okay?

FRINGE is back!

After a semi-torturous mini-break, the series returns tonight with the first of four brand new episodes. Sounds good, right?

So what’s going down in the hour?

William Bell’s presence in Olivia’s mind is causing her significant harm, so the team goes to extreme lengths to get her back. Leonard Nimoy (William) is back (sort of), but you already knew that was coming. Oh, and the episode is named after a drug. It’s all quite FRINGE-y.

Check out a fantastically trippy promo video and teaser for “Lysergic Acid Diethylamide”…

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS’ Matt Lauria Talks Season 5, CHICAGO CODE

Comments Off on FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS’ Matt Lauria Talks Season 5, CHICAGO CODE

It’s been a year since FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS filmed its fifth and final season, and several months since the finale first aired on DirecTV. But for many fans who don’t subscribe to the cable service, the swan song season of FNL starts this Friday when it debuts at 8 p.m. on NBC.

To honor its network TV premiere, we got in touch with Matt Lauria — aka Lions QB Luke Cafferty — to chat a bit about what fans can expect…

So, at the end of season 4, the East Dillon Lions nabbed a much-needed win, beating the Dillon Panthers — which was a pretty big deal. As season 5 opens, where do the Lions find themselves?
Matt Lauria: Well, we’re still the underdogs, but what you will begin to see is a real turning of the page in terms of camaraderie, the team dynamic and especially the community, too, coming together in this massive support of the Lions — you begin to see the bigger social and cultural impact that the team — and what Coach is doing — is accomplishing.

COMMUNITY Recap: ‘Competitive Wine Tasting’

Comments Off on COMMUNITY Recap: ‘Competitive Wine Tasting’

For our study group, it’s the last day to sign up for Spring semester electives, and the episode’s storylines largely revolve around which class each character signs up for and who they’re paired off with. So, let’s review…

Troy and Britta

Troy and Britta, on the suggestion of their dance teacher, signed up for “The Actor Inside,” taught by the professor who first appeared in the episode, “Conspiracy Theories and Interior Design.” Britta’s there because she wants to “reach deep inside herself,” while Troy is there because he couldn’t get off the waiting list for Foosball — though, little nerd that he is, he gets excited about it pretty quickly, debating with himself what his stage name should be—Trevor StMcGoodbody, or…David. His excitement might have something to do with another little interesting development: he notices Britta’s potential to join the StMcGoodbody clan. As a result, he lies to the acting class, telling everyone he was molested by his uncle when he was a kid. Britta, who has been diagnosed by Abed as being “attracted to pain, [because] it helps her believe she’s mentally healthy,” of course immediately rushes to Troy’s side, and even kisses him.

This is something that was foreshadowed way back at the beginning of this season in “Basic Rocket Science” when the two of them definitely shared a “moment” as the space shuttle/Kentucky Fried Chicken-mobile hit a bump in the road. And an interesting development it certainly is. I mean, other than their make-out session in the back of a car on Troy’s birthday, the Jeff-Britta romance/ego-fest has largely been put on hold for much of this season in favor of the always classic Jeff-Annie spats. I have no doubt they’ll circle back around to Jeff and Britta eventually—it’s difficult for sitcoms, even ones as offbeat as COMMUNITY, to completely abandon the couple they used as a jumping-off point—but I’m glad they’re taking the scenic route and allowing some wiggle room along the way, as was evidenced in this brilliant scene, these people are all far too attractive and friendly not to end up in each others’ beds every once in a while.

BONES Recap: ‘The Truth in the Myth’

April 15, 2011 by

Hello, BONES pals! It’s time to discuss a new episode, The Truth in the Myth, in which Booth tries to teach Brennan a lesson, Brennan tries to make Booth laugh, and Hodgins’ dream of a free-chupacabra-roaming world is busted.

While I didn’t completely love how it was executed, I liked the interlocking theme between the existence of mythical creatures in the case and Booth and Brennan’s relationship. I love Booth—no denying that. But I’ve ALWAYS loved when Brennan tries to tell jokes. From where I type, it’s also time for Booth to get the Yeti out of the dark side of his moon and laugh at Brennan’s jokes. She’s funny! More on that later, but first, let’s discuss…

Paul Reiser returns to TV — and NBC — with the series premiere of THE PAUL REISER SHOW, but that’s not the only big thing going on in his life right now.

Give Me My Remote caught up with Reiser at Nate ‘n Als in Beverly Hills where the restaurant was debuting their new “The Paul Ryeser” sandwich. Yep, they created a huge sandwich for him. Pretty darn awesome.

Reiser took some time from his sandwich promoting duties to talk with reporters about the series premiere of his new show, specifically the hilarious Larry David guest spot.

ABC Cancels ALL MY CHILDREN and ONE LIFE TO LIVE

April 14, 2011 by
Filed under ABC Daytime, TV News

ABC announced today that it will be ending two of its long-running soaps within the next nine months. ALL MY CHILDREN’s last episode will air in September and ONE LIFE TO LIVE will remain on the air until January 2012. Their cancellations had been rumored for a bit — most notably in a TV Guide Magazine report in early April — but the news was still unexpected when ABC made the official announcement.

To say this is a crushing blow to the already floundering soap opera industry is an understatement. In February 2012, we’ll be down to just four soaps — in the early 2000s, there were 10. There hasn’t been a new traditional daytime soap created since 1999. And with the cancellations today, I can’t imagine the people who work on the remaining shows are feeling very confident about their job security.

VAMPIRE DIARIES Preview: We’ve Seen This Week’s Episode!

April 14, 2011 by
Filed under #1 featured, The Vampire Diaries

Comments Off on VAMPIRE DIARIES Preview: We’ve Seen This Week’s Episode!

With Klaus — aka the biggest, baddest, vampire that ever (didn’t) live — inhabiting Alaric’s body this week, things get a little more complicated in Mystic Falls.

We won’t see much of Katherine during tonight’s hour, as Klaus (or Klaus-Ric as I’ve now decided to call him…say it with me, sort of has a nice ring to it, no?) has her all kidnapped. But there is one fun little scene between the two, which involves some serious bloodshed. Katherine’s blood, to be clear.

Meanwhile, Elena thinks she’s all good to go in her “safehouse,” which seems real silly when Klaus-Ric pops right in just in time to hear Bonnie, Stefan, Damon and Elena chatting about how much power Bonnie can harness to kill Klaus.

At that point, Klaus-Ric’s mission is clear: To end the “witch-bitch.”

But Bonnie is so not a bitch — her love and dedication to Elena burns brightly tonight as she doesn’t blink twice at the thought of having to sacrifice herself to protect Elena from Klaus…even if it kills her. Jeremy, on the other hand, is having some trouble with it. If this kid loses another ladyfriend, he’s clearly going to snap.

Damon, though, is on the same page as Bonnie, with Elena’s safety being his main priority. There are a few pretty funny Damon moments in this ep, p.s., so look forward to that.

What else? Well, not a lot goes down on the Matt-Caroline front, though it is certainly a storyline that’s still playing out and seems like it’s about to explode.

But, the question this evening is, will Bonnie explode?

Take a quick peek at a scene from tonight…
