THE KILLING Finale: Did You Like How Season 1 Ended?
June 19, 2011 by Marisa Roffman
[Spoiler alert: If you haven’t watched the season finale of THE KILLING, turn away now. For those of you who have seen “Orpheus Descending,” read on.]
When we last left off, our team realized Richmond’s computer was getting the emails Linden was sending, Holden was sent by a witness to a location where Richmond’s picture was plastered all over the wall and viewers were left wondering whether the show has solved their central murder one episode before the first season ended.
So was Richmond guilty all along?
It certainly appears not. While Richmond was arrested for Rosie’s murder, the final moments of episode revealed that the bridge cameras that allegedly proved that he was on the road the night she died had been broken for months…the pictures were faked. Unfortunately for Richmond, the only one who knew the truth was Linden, who got a call as she was on a plane, about to leave for her much-delayed move.
Even worse? Holder apparently was involved in faking the pictures, as we saw him in a car with an unseen person, saying they bought the pictures. And Belko was about a half-second from shooting Richmond in the chest as he was being transported, presumably so the whole conspiracy (?!) could get away with covering up Rosie’s real murderer. Or something like that. There was a lot of unclear information given to us in about 30 seconds, so there are tons of things we can hopefully look forward to getting answered in season 2.
As a viewer, I have such mixed feelings on this finale. On one hand, I’m happy we’ll be seemingly spending more time with these characters next year. And I’m freaking thrilled it apparently wasn’t Richmond, because that felt like one of the biggest cop outs the show could do.
On the other hand, we have no resolution to who killed Rosie. At this point, I don’t know if we’re any further along in that mystery than we were in episode one, with the exception of being fairly certain Linden and Richmond didn’t do it. (But I think most of us guessed that by the pilot.)
Holder being a bad guy was something I had speculated about to a friend very early in the season, but dismissed because a) it seemed too simple to have the new guy who suddenly popped in out of nowhere be bad, b) how much growth they’ve shown in Holder the past season, and most importantly, c) how much he bonded with Linden. Right now, out of all the “betrayals” of the finale, Holder’s out-of-nowhere inclusion as being part of the group covering up Rosie’s real killer — or at least framing Richmond — is what is stinging the most.

So, Marisa, does that mean that the girlfriend, Gwen, is lying too? Perhaps he wasn’t dripping wet and missing. Is she involved? My guess is that she will end up dead and we’ll be solving her murder too.
Ooh, that’s a GREAT thought, Amy!!! I thought Gwen was definitely involved, but in what way is unclear. I thought they were going to have her be the killer, which they still could do.
Absolutely loved the finale, awesome twist with Holder! Great show, can’t wait for S2! When does S2 start, anyone know?
I may be in the minority but I loved the cliffhanger finale. I have been far more disappointed with so many other season finales that this one was very refreshing. I for one do not believe for a minute that Holder is guilty or the, “bad guy.” The acting on this show is superb! What I love the most is that we are going in to Season 2 and I still have absolutely no idea who the real killer is. How awesome is that!! I hate to throw other shows under the bus but I can figure out the killer in a Bones ep within the first 5 minutes now!! I say bring on Season 2 – can’t wait!
