GLEE Spoilers From Comic Con…and Why the GLEE Producers are Driving Me Crazy!
July 24, 2011 by Kath Skerry
I wasn’t lucky enough to be in the room for the GLEE Comic Con panel today, but through the fabulosity that is technology, I was able to listen via Ustream and track updates courtesy of other fantastic people who were in attendance.
In addition to sharing some of the tasty tibits you can look forward to seeing this season, I also wanted to share some of my thoughts…as a fellow GLEEK.
Listening in on the panel today, I couldn’t help but feel a bit frustrated with the GLEE producers. Despite its (many) faults, GLEE is still one of my favorite shows on TV today, and as such I keep up pretty well with news articles, interviews, etc from the cast and creative team behind the show. So it’s a little frustrating to hear contradictory statements coming from the various GLEE writers and producers as to upcoming storylines. As my less than eloquent self tweeted during the GLEE panel “This #GLEE panel is giving me heartburn. I don’t know if the writers/producers just make shit up on the fly or not?” I get that storyarcs are subject to change, but from the outside, it really sounds more like Ryan Murphy is just spewing out his own personal opinion on where the show is going without the benefit of consulting his other co-producers. I’m not saying that’s the case, but observationally it sure feels that way.
With such a rabid and dedicated fanbase, I wish Murphy and others from the GLEE creative team took a bit more care when addressing what may or may not happen with the show and the actors involved. I certainly don’t want to take all this too seriously, I mean it’s GLEE that we’re talking about here, but I think the creative team has a certain responsibility to their audience when it comes to fueling the fanbase flames.
So let’s get to those spoilers I promised you. I’m going to break them down one by one and share my thoughts on each. But I’m just one person. Just a GLEE fan like all of you. So just like Kurt Hummel, YOU matter! And I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
It’s not necessarily the end of the GLEE for Kurt, Rachel and Finn
“I don’t know where that report came from. Cory, Lea, Chris are seniors, but they’re graduating. Just because they’re graduating, it doesn’t mean they’re leaving the show. If you have Lea Michele under contract, you’re not just going to let her go. Come the first episode back, you see who the seniors and juniors are. Some of our seniors will not graduate. I can guarantee here that they are not done with the show after this season.”
Kath’s Rant…
Yeah, so the report came from here. I happen to know the reporter that wrote this article and it’s not in her nature to embellish…at all. Read the article again and tell me that Ryan Murphy is not implying that Lea, Cory and Chris are leaving the show. Come on. And then of course there is the actual dialog:
- THR: Will we see a Season 4 with Chris Colfer (Kurt) and Lea Michele (Rachel)?
- Murphy: No.
- THR: We will not?
- Murphy: They are graduating.
- THR: What about Cory Monteith?
- Murphy: Cory is graduating. Those are the only three I’m going to say.
- THR: They’re not going to be back at all in Season 4?
- Murphy: No.
And what about the reactions from Chris when he’s been asked? Again, he never said straight out that he would be leaving the show, but saying “Do I want to leave the show? Absolutely not, this is home for me. But I understand that there’s time for a conclusion.” certainly implies a certain amount of closure.
Chord Overstreet will NOT be returning in the role of Sam Evans next season.
“For reasons he’s aware of, we decided not to make him a regular but we did ask him to come back for a portion of the season. He declined the offer, which we were very disappointed by because we were writing stories for him. We had some cool ideas with him and Mercedes, but Chord decided he had opportunities elsewhere. I will say, just because he’s gone, Mercedes will have a new boyfriend she met up with this summer. He’s like ‘you deserve more, Mercedes’, lifting her up. He’s this big bubba kind of guy.”
Kath’s Rant…
I have nothing against Chord Overstreet and wish him nothing but the best (so please don’t slam my Twitter account), but perhaps this isn’t his best career move. Leaving GLEE before he has truly established a non-GLEE fan base? Yikes. Again, I wish him well.
Yes, Harry and Darren got promoted to series regular and Chord didn’t. Harry has been on the show since Season 1 and it’s just happening now. As for Darren, haters can hate but there is no denying that the guy has been the breakout star of the series this past season. Blaine is a character with real potential, so it was smart to sign on Darren before other opportunities steal him away.
Mercedes Gets Her Man
“Mercedes will have a new boyfriend she met up with this summer. He’s like ‘you deserve more, Mercedes’, lifting her up. He’s this big bubba kind of guy.”
Kath’s Rant…
Samcedes may be kaput, but I’m all for Mercedes finally landing herself a man. Single, dating…I don’t really care as long as the writers give Mercedes some kind of real storyline this year.
Another tribute episode may happen
“We talked about it. If it’s going to happen, it will happen in the second half of the season. We really do want to spend some real time with the characters in the first nine, ten episodes.”
Kath’s Rant…
Skip the tribute episode and make me a happy gleek. I’ve heard rumors (from good sources, but ONLY rumors all the same) that the tribute episode would involve one of my favorite artists of all time – Bruce Springsteen. If, and that’s a strong IF, these rumors were to come to pass, I’d still be against it. Happy to hear that Brad Falchuk is all for focusing on the characters this season. More characters, less gimicks…please!
Everything is Klaine and nothing hurts
“They’re not breaking up. They’re solid. They have problems – you have two stars dating each other, there’s going to be some competition there.”
Kath’s Rant…
Can a rant be a good thing? If so, OH YEAH! (Stop while I throw some papers into the air and jump on some furniture…Warblers style!) The relationship between Kurt an Blaine was the saving grace for GLEE last season. I’m all for seeing their romance develop. I’m not against a little angst with my favorite TV twosomes, so I’m digging what Brad’s saying about possible conflict coming from their musical egos. So much better than possible alternatives.
Congress Woman Sue Sylvester?
“Sue’s running for Congress, in case you didn’t here. On the Sue Sylvester Liberty for America Party,” Brennan says. “She’s taken destroying Will and the Glee Club at a local level. Now she’s going to try to do it on a national level,” Falchuk says. He adds, “Sue is running on a No Arts platform.”
Kath’s Rant…
Oh where to begin? So Sue is going to continue to work at McKinley while running for Congress? Hmm, ok, I can let that one slide. What I can’t let slide is the idea that Sue is still trying to destroy the glee club. Seriously? I thought that the writers were ready to let that story finally rest by having the glee kids plan such a touching memorial service for Sue’s sister.
And what about this quote from Ryan Murphy where he pretty much says that this story is played OUT: “We’ve decided it’s a little tired for Sue to be constantly trying to destroy the glee club. We did that, and we did that well. But now it’s time for Sue to stop picking on the glee club and time for her to start picking on the country.”
Really?
THE GLEE PROJECT winner might not be Sue’s Nemesis
Falchuk’s answer about these reports: “Not really at all.”
Kath’s Rant…
Here we go again. May I quote Mr. Ryan Murphy – “The winner of The Glee Project is the person who she hates the most in the history of the show,” Murphy tells TVGuide.com. He went on to say, “The Glee Project winner is Sue Sylvester’s new archenemy and she is going to destroy their life.”
Again, it’s cool to change your minds in the writing room, but if a story isn’t solid then why go flapping on about it. Just say you don’t know what the role of THE GLEE PROJECT winner will be. Or even something as, ‘there’s a chance the winner could be Sue’s nemesis.’ Don’t be so definitive about it if the rest of the creative team hasn’t been clued in or isn’t on board.
So how are you feeling about these new GLEE tidbits? Looking forward to the new season? (I know I am! They start shooting S3 on August 8th.) Would love to hear your thoughts on what the cast and creative team had to say today as well as what YOU would like to see happen in the upcoming season.

I just can’t with Glee. Ryan Murphy is terrible. He made it sound like he had talked to his actors and they knew they were leaving when in reality he was virtually firing them through the media. As for Chord, he also made it sound like he was going to sit down and talk to Chord. In all honesty, I would totally hate to work on Glee. The Producers of this show seem to consistently throw their actors under the bus.
Thanks for this Kath. I too love the show but get very frustrated by it…if this is what’s happening behind the scenes, no wonder what appears on our tv screens is often so disjointed!
Kath – Amen to all of this. I am literally dizzy trying to keep up with all of the conflicting info coming from Ryan and Brad. Honestly, of the 2 of them I am inclined to beleive Brad far more. Ryan just seems to throw stuff out there regardless of its accuracy.
Mostly, I am just sitting here squeeing about Season 3 Klaine goodness!!
I saw several different sites report interviews with Ryan Murphy where he said the 3 were leaving. It wasn’t hinted at he ACTUALLY said it. He is horrible! I blame all of Glee’s problems on his wishy-washiness. Its really turning me off the show. I would also hate working for them. There is way too much inconsistency. and the fact that the 3 actors kinda have no idea if they have a job after this season is pretty awful. I can’t blame chord overstreet for leaving. heres hoping getting an actual writing staff will make glee tolerable again. I
LOL!!!! You can’t make this stuff up. Well Glee, you tricked me again. Congrats.
Cory, Lea and Chris are my favorite actors on Glee, and am I being a very bad fan if I say I wish they’d decide to chuck it and never ever come back on this show again? They are all super talented, they all have great careers ahead of them. Cory can become the next hot leading man in Hollywood rom-coms or play interesting quirky characters in indie films. Lea…will be our generation’s living Broadway legend. Chris will be the actor/writer/director extraordinaire. Glee made stars of them all and I hope they springboard this opportunity into more greatness. But I feel Glee is a sinking ship and it’s best they get off while they are at the top.
You and me both, Amy!
Fantastic point, @Canakatydid.
Great report. I am sick of it all too. I just love Finn and Rachel, they are it for me. If they mess them up again, I am gone. I want Cory and Lea to leave on top. This is a sinking ship as someone said above. Just give me one last season with finchel and I can watch them ride into the sunset. That’s what I want so I can stop watching this show!
I’m telling you, I have high hopes for season 3.
I think the winner of The Glee Project hands down is Zach (Zack?). He has the most charisma.
Um, @ToastwithJam – There isn’t a contestant named Zach. Are you talking about Zach Woodle, the GLEE choreographer?
The guys left are Cameron, Damien, Sam and Alex.
