CASTLE Executive Producer Laurie Zaks Teases the Castle-Beckett Dynamic in Season 4
July 25, 2011 by Marisa Roffman
Given that Castle told Beckett he loved her after she was shot in the CASTLE season finale, how will the dynamic in season 4 be handled now that his true feelings are out? After all, those three little words are a pretty huge step for a (potential) couple.
To get the answer to that, I posed that query to CASTLE executive producer Laurie Zaks after their Comic-Con panel.
“Yes, it’s absolutely true,” she acknowledged. “Here’s what I say to that: [the “I love you”] will be the biggest challenge because once you say that…you can’t put the genie back in the bottle. There was a lot of discussion about that, with the network, the studio and with ABC. Should he say it? Should he not say it? Should he think it? But when we saw it — and I believe it was shot both ways — he has to say it. It was a natural thing to say. So all I can say to answer your question — which is two-fold — one is yes, it’s going to be an enormous challenge, and I can’t speak for the writers, [so] that’s something you may want to ask [CASTLE creator] Andrew [Marlowe]. The [second] thing is in the premiere episode, there will be many reveals which will help people to understand and also, I think, help dictate how the relationship will unfold. But I don’t want to say what they are.”
And while Zaks wouldn’t say more, she did say that she herself is intrigued by where things are going.
“Personally for me, watching it and reading it, it’ll be an interesting year,” Zaks teased. “The other interesting dynamic is being a woman, I think we’ve all experienced the difference of working for a man and working for a woman, right? So all of a sudden Beckett, this very strong female, is working for a woman who really is not quite so enamored with her. I thought Roy was a bit of a pushover myself. But that’s another interesting dynamic that I think will be fun to watch. And the actress is really lovely, Penny Johnson Jerald, and the cast embraced her, which was really nice.”
As for what else fans can look forward to this season, when a reporter questioned whether there would ever be a CASTLE Christmas episode, Zaks replied that she thought it might happen this year.
“I know the network really wants one,” she said. “I think our last episode before we break is early December, so I’m really hoping [it happens]…I really want a Christmas episode!”
What do you think? Do you want a Christmas episode? Are you hoping Castle’s “I love you” will play a big role in his dynamic with Beckett this season?

So……the network, the studio, and ABC all got together and decided to go ahead with the “I love you”? THAT is excellent news. Sounds like it’s going to be a fantastic season four, looking forward to it. Thank you Maris for all your wonderful work.
I REALLY want the Christmas episode. I think it would be really cute and fun to see what Beckett and Castle would get each other. I was a bit surprised that the scene had once been shot without the “I love you.” I can see why they would leave it. It just doesn’t seem right.
I’m just really happy that the network, the studio, and ABC apparently were on the same page with the ILY. It bodes well for the future story of Castle and Beckett moving forward with their relationship.
I totally agree. I am happy to know that everyone was in agreement on the ILY. It does make things move forward more smoothly. As for the Christmas episode, I know there are alot of us in the fandom that have been waiting for this since the 2nd season. It should be absolutely wonderful. My guess is it will leave us all with a soft gushy feeling when it’s done. I also would hazzard a guess on the fact that Castle won’t know what to give Beckett as a gift, so he’ll have 2 gifts for her. One silly or superficial that he gives her in front of other people, and one that is his true gift, that he gives her when they are alone. He seems like the kind of guy that would do that. All in all, I can’t wait for S4. Is it September yet?
How about a chanukah ep? I know there’s probably no Jews in the precinct, but it it does take place in NY… As a Jew, even as an adult, I cant help but feel excluded regarding most of my fave shows. Even the Walkers who were “technically” half Jewish acted as if they weren’t, except for Saul
Castle, Becket, Lanie, Ryan and Esposito are all at a ski lodge (Ryan’s girlfriend is away) for the weekend during the Christmas season when a murder occurs where they are staying. So we get our required murder plot but before that maybe some fun scenes on the slopes, around the fire etc…. Or a murder takes place at a homeless shelter around the holidays and maybe it leaves a child with nowhere to go (it was their mother) so Becket takes the child in for the holidays rather than leaving him/her to DSS. Becket, Castle, Lanie, Ryan and Esposito all get involved in investigating the murder and in helping the child have some sort of Christmas in the wake of the tragedy.
