AMERICAN HORROR STORY: Ryan Murphy Previews the Series. Plus, Watch the First 5 Minutes of the Premiere!

AMERICAN HORROR STORY– the new FX series from GLEE co-creators Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy — premieres tonight at 10 PM, and it truly is unlike anything on TV right now. Murphy and Falchuk have called it a psychosexual thriller, which is certainly accurate for what I’ve seen (the pilot amps up the psychosexuality, whereas the second episode is much more horror movie-esque). But what inspired them to do this series?

“We were working on this idea, Brad [Falchuk] and I, three years ago before we did GLEE — and then GLEE happened, and we put this on hold,” Murphy explained to a group of reporters late last month. “And we always loved the idea of it, so we went back to it. I can only speak for me personally, but I think we, before we even had the idea of doing a horror show…we were really interested in the theme of infidelity, and how that can destroy you and that can haunt you. From that idea, we put the rest of the bells and whistles into it.”

“But the specific idea of all the episodes, for the most part, has been really interesting and really primal in the writer’s room,” he continued. “Very early on, before we even started the show, really, we got together and talked about, ‘Okay, what are we the most afraid of right now in this society? What are we really freaked out about?’ You know, it’s been totally cool and interesting and different answers. And one of the universal ideas that everybody was really terrified of was the idea of people breaking into your house, home invasions. There have certainly been a number of high-profile incidences in the last two or three years. So, that was the impetus of this [second] episode, that, ‘What scares us?’ and talking about that. Because we’re really not interested in making a slasher sort of series. We’re really trying to talk about and write about fears in society and these people and what they’re afraid of. And that’s how that happened.”
