FRINGE Spoiler Alert: Guess Whose Mother is Returning?
October 13, 2011 by Marisa Roffman
With Peter Bishop wiped from our current timeline, things have been shaping up a little differently than we’ve been used to on FRINGE. Alt-Broyles is alive. Baby Henry is MIA. Olivia killed her stepfather. And who knows what else has changed that we haven’t even thought of?
Which is precisely why this latest bit of casting news simultaneously has me scratching my head and anxiously anticipating whatever the show has planned for us: Fox has confirmed to Give Me My Remote that Orla Brady (Elizabeth Bishop) will pop back up on FRINGE in the upcoming eighth episode of the season.
But because this is FRINGE, even simple casting news can lead to a ton of speculation.
As you may remember, in the former timeline where we spent the past three seasons, our version of Elizabeth died when Peter was younger. However, Peter’s biological mother (and Walternate’s wife) was still alive and kicking when we last saw her at the end of the second season.
But that was then. As we mentioned, Peter’s absence from our timeline has brought a ton of changes. And considering Brady was spotted filming scenes with Joshua Jackson (Peter) in Vancouver, could Peter’s straight-up death in this version of their worlds (versus his death and then her guilt of living with raising a kidnapped child) have saved Elizabeth’s life? Or perhaps has Peter crossed over to the altverse — he did build a pretty stellar bridge, after all — to pay a visit to his bio mother now that he’s back amongst the solid and living?
Theories, guys. I need your best theories. Share them in the comments!

So many possibilities and I don’t think I could say which one is more likely. At this point everything seems to be possible. Nothing can be ruled out.
I think I like the visit to his biological mother best, but that’s just me…
The photos show her with Walternate at the Cemetary so presumably it is in fact the Other Universe’s Elizabeth i.e Peter’s real mother. However, one question remains…why does she look considerably younger than the last time we saw her in season 2? (she had allot more gray hair then). Perhaps. they are bringing Peter tot he cemetery to show him the grave of the son that they know to have died. I think Peter now being in a situation where none of the people in our universe know who he is or love him as they did, gives some consideration to returning to the red universe. He has nothing to lose!?
has to be alt elizabeth cause walter said his wife killed herself on this side in subject 9
Walter said last episode that his wife committed suicide. So our version of her is still dead I suppose.
exactly there is no way shes alive, walter already said that his wife passed away when peter drowned she killed her self so its probably walternates wife or his mother on the other side that hes talking to…
In the last episode Walter said his wife commited Suicide after there little son Peter died. So she is still dead in the new Timeline
Walter said last week that his wife committed suicide when Peter died. My guess is this is alternate Elizabeth again.
I agree that it is walternate’s wife. I don’t think that he will go back to the other side. He loves Olivia and the alternate Olivia is with someone else. I’m glad peter is back and I hope he is here to stay.
It could be here’s.. Walter was in st. claires when she died
I love Fringe, but it must have a credible story line, there are so many things said and done in the last 3 seaons with Peter in them that setting the story now with him never existed is making the serial so much less credible, doing so much unjustice to the brillant cast of the show. I am afraid the show has taken a bad turn.
@Theresa: wait until you see at least a few episodes after Peter’s return. We will know his history when no one else does.
If Peter did not exist, then what did Walter “do” to open up the alt-universe to start the holes in the universe? We know they use amber, it was seen in the second episode.
Maybe Walter went over and ended up grabbing Elizabeth and forcing her over to “our” side, and that started this timeline’s tears in space and time?
@Shelby: Peter existed. In the previous episode, Alone in the World, when talking with Aaron in the lab, he mentioned that Walter’s original Peter died just the same. The Peter we know was also dying the same way, but he drowned when they came back from the other side.
In other words, the Observers rewrote history to where they didn’t save Peter from drowning.
Well if you watch all episodes this season. You know Walter told how his wife killer her self. So maybe something else.
Peter will try to look for his (our) original-verse (blue opening credit). When 3rd-verse Olivia (orangey-ish opening credit) asked “who are you” Peter must have realized he comes back not to his original-verse. Possible that he then convince 3rd-verse Fringe team to send him ‘over there’ (red opening credit) to check, meet his supposedly alive biological mother, but finds out that ‘over there’ is also not his ‘over there’-verse (4th-verse-over-there Broyle’s alive).
Phewww, i think i managed to theorize the multi-verse jumping-Peter quite nicely.
in episode 4×04 Walter said she had committed suicide. Most likely be his mother in the other universe.
