BONES’ TJ Thyne Previews Hodgins’ Relationship with the New Squintern: ‘He Doesn’t Want to Make it Easy on Anyone’

Tonight on BONES, Finn, the new squintern (played by Luke Kleintank) makes his debut, but unfortunately for him, not everyone is greeting him with open arms.

“I don’t know if Jack doesn’t get along with Finn, I just think Jack is that guy — and he’s done this with all of the interns — where he teases everyone who has come in, basically,” TJ Thyne (Hodgins) told me. “He doesn’t want to make it easy on anyone, and Hodgins is very protective of the team and the lab and he likes to get under these people’s skin.”

But how does Finn react to the ribbing?

“This poor kid, he takes offense to it and is really angry and emotional about it,” Thyne explained. “And I think a part of Jack is like, get over it, I’m messing with you. But it’s fun. That dynamic is really, really interesting and cool, and I have to say for me, it was fun to have someone to poke at. Hodgins has become so friendly with the [interns] — he still gives Daisy [trouble] and they have this really funny ‘can’t stand each other’ kind of relationship — but with Fisher and Wendall and the others, they’re all really good friends now and he enjoys them and getting to work with them.”

In fact, Thyne noted that the adversarial relationship reminded him of another beloved BONES duo.

“It was fun getting to bring someone new in who reminded me of the early days with Zack,” he said. “No one is Zack and no one will replace Zack ever, ever, ever, but [for] Hodgins, that little brother, pick on him kind of thing is back. It was neat to play that again, where I know I’m getting underneath people’s skin. It was the reverse with Zack, because I’d try to get under his skin and it would never work and then he’d get under mine and I’d get frustrated. So it’s nice to have some new faces on the platform as well.”
