About Last Night… GLEE, RINGER, RAISING HOPE and More
November 30, 2011 by Marisa Roffman
So, um, television mostly got me angry last night. With the exception of RAISING HOPE (and how can you be angry at that show?), TV last night was kind of terrible.
With that loveliness out of the way, let’s talk about what went down Tuesday night…
I enjoy Santana, but last night’s episode of GLEE was a hot mess. The writers have made her more of a bully than normal as she struggles with her forced outing, but then they jerk on our heartstrings by having her grandmother reject her. (That may have been the only non-musical scene I enjoyed, yet I felt manipulated.) I adore Finn, but how was this issue not something Santana handled with Brittany, Kurt or Blaine? How is Emma not used during this storyline given that she is the school’s guidance counselor?! Argh.
I am actually really angry with RINGER right now. (Yes, I’m mad at a television show. It happens.) Between the ridiculous (apparent) rape claim Juliet made against her teacher and Gemma’s whole she’s-dead-no-she’s-kidnapped-no-she’s-dead-no-she-escaped-being-shot-while-in-a-trunk-wow-she-found-out-the-truth-about-Siobhan-being-alive-oh-wait-now-she’s-really-dead ordeal, it feels like an entire waste of time. A “rape” storyline is never in good taste and with Gemma, it would have made more of an impact had they just killed her off when they first hinted at it. While I’m interested to see what’s going to happen now that Bridget and Siobhan are in the same town, there is too much about this show that is so utterly frustrating in the worst possible way.
I watched the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show because I adore Maroon 5. (Didn’t realize Kanye and Jay-Z were also performing, so that was a pleasant surprise.) I hated myself by the end of the hour.
RAISING HOPE was just a light at the end of the miserable tunnel. Watching the Chance family try to come up with new things to bring to an invention competition was great. (As was the unexpected WIZARD OF OZ parallel.) Brogurt actually sounds like it could make money and that baby mop sounds productive in a child-services-may-come-for-your-kid kind of way. (And whomever is responsible for having the name card kid at the end say “Aaaadorkable” may be my new favorite human.)
90210 is still on my DVR because I’m hopelessly behind. I’ll be caught up by the time the show returns. I think.
Was I too cranky about last night’s television? Let me know what you enjoyed (or didn’t).
