Some Thoughts on the Golden Globe Nominations
December 15, 2011 by Marisa Roffman
Oh, Golden Globes, you’re so predictably unpredictable. This morning’s nominations brought some truly head-scratching nominees, but they also brought some well-deserved kudos.
Let’s talk about some of the stand-outs from the morning…
- HOMELAND!! Claire Danes, Damian Lewis and the series all got nominations, so there was no need for me to go on a long rant about how much they got looked over. So well-deserved.
- My biggest surprise of the morning? EPISODES! Given that it premiered in early 2011 and there are so many quality comedies on television, I figured it would be buried, perhaps with a nod for series star Matt LeBlanc (who did get the nomination). But yay for the series getting acknowledged as well!
- As much as I 100% agree there are some amazing drama shows on cable, it’s sad that not one single network show was acknowledged. (In fact, the only dramatic network nominee came in the form of Madeleine Stowe for ABC’s REVENGE.)
- Again, I love my USA shows, but I have no clue what to make of Callie Thorne’s nomination for NECESSARY ROUGHNESS.
- This is a complaint every year, but seriously, split up the miniseries, television movies and television series supporting actors. Way too many talented actors get passed over due to this overcrowded category.
- Speaking of which, I echo my John Noble complaint from yesterday.
- A lot of people tend to complain the same few people are always nominated for awards, but there’s no denying the Globes mixed things up. (Whether they mixed the right people in is another story.)
The good news? No new award nominations to complain or praise tomorrow!
So tell me, which Globes nods have you most excited or frustrated?

Marisa, Julianna Margulies also was nominated for the excellent network drama The Good Wife.
Glad to see Johnny Galecki got his share of the love for The Big Bang Theory.
You are 100% right re: JM. Okay, that makes it slightly better (and JM is totally worthy of the nomination). I blame the early hour for this 😉
everytime community is snubbed, i die a little inside.
same goes with fringe.
Anna Torv biggest snub, and you forget to mention her.
No Walter without Olivia, in every way.
Anna Torv carries the best parts of season 3 and this season she is again outstanding with another version of Olivia, all so subtle and with so much depth, and with that the double act Olivia/Fauxlivia in so many scenes.
This will probably be the last season of Fringe, so showrunners concentrate on your characters leave the monster of the week, end please could we get a major Olivia versus Nina/Walter storyline that deals with the abuse of Olivia and the other children and what Nina may have to do with the treatment/death of Olivia;s mother. This would be the most dramatic part and
Anna Torv, Blair Brown and John Noble can show their acting skills.
The cortexiphan and Over There provide the sci-fi, it may even get Fringe some Emmy love and an end on a high note.
