About Last Night…AMERICAN IDOL, MODERN FAMILY, REVENGE, and More
February 16, 2012 by Marisa Roffman
Oh, Wednesdays, you’re so crazy busy.
With so much on our television screens last night, let’s get right down to talking about what aired…
AMERICAN IDOL, what are you doing? The show has never felt so…cheap to me. The group rounds were a disaster, the drama was over-the-top (seriously, are they depriving them of food or water or something? I’ve never seen so many contestants collapse), and the only redeeming moments in terms of singing was when the contestants did their solo songs.
MODERN FAMILY was hysterical. Claire, Phil, Cam, and Mitchell getting drunk together and deciding that Claire should donate an egg so her brother and his partner could have a baby was so awkwardly amazing, as was the fallout of them trying to undo those plans. However, the absolute moment of the episode for me was when Jay took four pennies from the collection Manny and Gloria had been building for years (so they could buy a lottery ticket with 100 heads up pennies they found) so the duo could continue on with their search.
Was I the only one absolutely underwhelmed by HAPPY ENDINGS last night? I enjoyed James Wolk, but the only moment of the entire episode that made me laugh was the David Caruso/CSI: MIAMI joke.
I like Daniel on REVENGE, I really do…but I was a little disappointed he wasn’t the body they found on the beach (which was first set up to be him in the pilot). I don’t feel his story is anywhere close to being done, but at the same time, if they wanted it to be up in the air, I feel like the pilot should have been more vague. Right now, it feels a bit like a cop-out. (And yes, I finally caught up on this show. I get why you were all yelling at me to get my butt in gear.)
I’m glad we finally got some insight into Rollins on LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT. Amaro (especially his family life) had been touched on earlier this season, so getting to see some of Rollins’ layers was refreshing. It feels weird to be applauding an addiction, but I’m glad we found this out, if only because the scenes with her and Cragen (himself a recovering alcoholic) talking about their issues were fantastically done.
SUBURGATORY and ROYAL PAINS are still waiting for me on my TiVo. Did you dig either episode? What else did you guys watch last night? Let’s talk…

I was even ON SET for the Happy Endings episode and was disappointed. There was so much more to that cutesy James Wolk in a tux moment. They really lost it. I have been feeling cheapened out by the show lately.
My favourite parts of “Happy Endings” were James Wolk’s “perfect” smile and Dave wearing those jeans but you’re right about how less than funny it was and how sweet and funny “Modern Family” was once again.
I am glad Daniel is staying on Revenge and look forward to the next chapter but I too thought that they might actually make the bold move to kill off a popular character (played by a popular actor) for the sake of the storyline. And I’ll miss hating the Psycho who ended up being the real victim.
Okay, I’m glad I wasn’t the only one not feeling HE. I’m less rabid about it than most (at least out of my circle of friends), so I thought maybe I had something off with me 😉
