About Last Night…ONCE UPON A TIME, THE SIMPSONS, PAN AM and More!
February 20, 2012 by Marisa Roffman
I don’t know about you guys, but Sunday night TV delivered varying levels of frustration for me. ( know, I was a bit surprised, too…normally the extreme frustration comes Tuesday nights.)
But let’s talk about what went down last night…
I’m very curious to hear what you guys thought about last night’s ONCE UPON A TIME. I adore David and Mary, but last night…last night was rough. David cheating on his wife (and yes, it was cheating, even if he had no memories of marrying his wife…he had just gotten through recommitting himself to her when he started his affair with Mary) was difficult enough, but his handling the affair in the last two episodes has taken the shine off of his character. Look, I don’t want my characters to be perfect, because quite frankly that’s boring. But what I’m trying to figure out (and it’s possible that I’m over-thinking this) is whether his less than charming Storybooke attributes are intentional so we can see the contrast between what the curse does to people, or if it’s unintentional and he’s just being a bit of a jerk. Right now, I feel bad for Katheryn and I feel bad for Mary (yes, she is part of the problem, but man, between the wrong Valentine and David lying to her about how he ended his marriage, she’s had it rough), but I feel like David needs to take a step back and be single for a while.
I adored the 500th episode of THE SIMPSONS. It’s almost surprising the family hadn’t been banished before this, but of course they were reunited with the townspeople before the episode concluded in a new version of Springfield. (Not going to lie, I laughed way too hard at Homer’s “I’m sick of watching fox” comment after the family sat on their new couch watching a literal fox.)
I wish DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES hadn’t ruined Orson. I finally caught up on the few episodes I had missed last month, and while I figured it was Orson stalking Bree, man, there is absolutely nothing redeeming about him now. Julie and Porter having a kid together feels so weird, but I can totally understand her frustration with Susan taking her decision away from her. I doubt Porter will raise the kid by himself whenever that storyline concludes, but it’ll be interesting to see what comes next for Lynette, Susan, Porter and Julie.
I’ve been pondering how I feel about the PAN AM finale, and the emotion I keep coming back to is the aforementioned frustration. This is a show that very, very, very likely will not return for the 2012-2013 season and despite that, they were granted the holy grail for short-lived series’ — an extra episode. And while I understand why there would be hesitation to completely wrap things up, introducing cliffhangers (especially Amanda’s pregnancy claim, right after Ted dumped her) seems just cruel for people who have invested 14 hours into this show. What’s the point?
But perhaps you enjoyed last night’s television more than I did. What did you watch?

Isn’t it the curse? David is the antithesis of Prince Charming, he is tentative and weak and a bit cowardly, whereas Prince Charming is decisive and brave, sort of like how Snow is kick butt and Mary Margaret was kind of a meek, scared loner, she’s starting to break through – maybe due to being around Emma more? I look at it like Jiminy/Archie – Jiminy would have never done Regina’s bidding, but now he’s found his conscience and stood up to her, he’s closer to the Jiminy we know.Come to think of it, didn’t Archie get yelled at by Emma? And Graham, aka hottie Sheriff who I miss terribly, he started to recognize he didn’t feel anything once he started hanging around with Emma. Maybe she is the catalyst for change/getting back to Storybrooke.
meant getting back to fairy tale land. RE Pan Am, it had some really good moments over the course of the season, but lots of lull’s, what is up with series having weak ~2-4 episodes to lose viewers. I would think you’d try and hit it out the park for the first 4-5 eps to hook viewers. There were some good actors on the show, hope they get picked up. Like I read somewhere hope they pick up the actress who plays Collette on Once, I could see that. They had Belle with an Aussie accent, different kingdoms would have different accents. And the actor who plays 3XK can come back to Castle and finish off that storyline.
What I find wearing in Once is how basically weak/unlikeable most of the modern day characters are. Too bad we have to spend so much time with them. The fairytale incarnations are much more interesting. And Regina? OMG. Snarl, sneer, smirk, threaten. Repeat and repeat and repeat. The actress must be bored out of her mind if that’s all the writers ever ask of her. Love Robert Carlyle. He at least can act.
@Cheryl, I suppose it could be the curse, but until the last couple episodes, I really didn’t get that vibe from David. Even in the beginning of the affair, he seemed more honorable than his actions of the last two hours.
Marisa – I guess David has always seemed very tentative to me, whereas Charming is very “man of action” as well as honorable. And for me, I didn’t think it quite honorable to be chasing MM while married, and then he was kind of wishy washy about it. Now what I cant wait for an explanation is why MM & David kissing didn’t break the spell? I thought true loves kiss broke all spells. Was it because they aren’t truly in love yet?
I just caught up with Once, so now can talk about it!
I saw on another board that some people think if Rumple and Belle kiss, that will break the spell. Then here, I saw someone say they thought MM and David kissing will break the spell.
I thought the early eps showed that the only one who can break the curse is Emma. Of course they never told us how she would do it, but little by little things are changing in Storybrook. Maybe the new guy in town has a part to play in breaking the curse? Since he is a stranger….
I dont like how David handled the situation with MM and Katherine, but I agree that since he is the opposite of James/Charming, his actions fit that. I hope him and MM find their way soon. I love seeing those 2 on screen together. What chemistry!
