About Last Night…THE VOICE, SMASH, CASTLE and More

March 27, 2012 by

Sorry for the delay, but hopefully a few of you still want to talk about Monday night’s television…

THE VOICE was fairly okay, but what the heck was Cee Lo thinking picking Tony over Justin? I like Tony, and I think normally he was good, but there was no question at all in my mind that Justin blew him out of the water. Ugh. Like last year, I think most of my favorite artists so far are on Teams Adam and Blake, but there are a couple I’m liking on the others.

As enjoyable as the ALCATRAZ finale was, I’m more frustrated than not. I didn’t go in expecting the big, big questions to be answered, but leaving it on such a massive cliffhanger (Rebecca being declared dead) was cruel for a show whose fate is very, very much in the air.

SMASH went accidentally super meta last night with the line, “I think I have half a terrific show and it needs help.” This is so painfully true. What the heck were they thinking with last night’s episode? Michael’s flip flop back to his family was stupid — it’s not that I necessarily wanted an affair storyline to drag out, but for him to pursue Julia again, restart the affair and then decide he wanted his family after all just felt even more selfish than if he had done it because he truly loved Julia. (I’m not going to even touch Eileen and Derek’s “brilliant” plan to reinvent how they tell Marilyn or the various ways I thought Ellis should be killed off in last night’s episode.) It truly brings me no joy to be so unsatisfied with this show and harping on its various weaknesses. This show started off so strongly and I feel it still has the potential to be terrific…but it’s not there. Something needs to be done to make things better.

CASTLE shook things up a little bit last night with how they dealt with the case of the week. Did you like seeing bits being unraveled via the various flashbacks? I’m not sure if my patience was worn a little thin due to watching SMASH first (almost certain that won’t be happening again), but I feel like I’ll need to rewatch it to fully appreciate the whole scope of the episode.

Moving on to the other big CASTLE thing, are you guys okay with how things played out between Castle and Beckett? Her secret is now out in the open, but he’s keeping quiet about it…for now.  Castle was plenty mopey, and while he has a genuine right to be upset and hurt by her inaction, he’s also not being fair. He dropped his bombshell on her when she was shot in the chest. As far as he knows, she might not have said something because she thought he only said it because she was dying/he hasn’t said anything since. (We know that’s not the case — and I do personally think Beckett should trust him with the truth that she’s not quite ready yet — but that’s an entirely different matter.) Not only that, but Castle is hiding a major relationship-changing secret of his own. People in glass houses…

You completely nailed the Castle dilemma. He totally jumps to conclusions. Of course, that’s what he does. He makes up the story of what happens without knowing all the facts. Not only do people do this all the time, (and cause themselves needless heartache) but for Castle in particular his reaction (sadly) really did fit his character… Luckily, Beckett is a dectective and will hopefully figure out what’s going on!

Haven’t seen Smash yet…and by the looks of people’s reactions (especially on Twitter) I’m in no rush too!

Totally agree with you about Alcatraz…what a way to potentially end the series!

Your thoughts on Castle were very astute Marisa…people in glass houses indeed! (Though it must be said…no one does a heartbreaking reaction shot better than Nathan Fillion!) It will be interesting to see how this plays out for the rest of the season and nicely sets up Castle’s upcoming “ride-along” with “Jayne”!

(PS Did anyone time the big reveal (Beckett in interogation/Castle watching)…wondering if that scene too was “47 seconds”.)

I went and saw The Hunger Games last night. Excellent flick.

Watched Smash on Hulu tonight. Ugh. 45 minutes of my life I will never recover.
