SUBURGATORY: Creator Emily Kapnek Teases Season 2
October 17, 2012 by Marisa Roffman
It’s been a long summer, but it’s finally time to return to Chatswin in tonight’s SUBURGATORY season premiere.
“It’s so funny, I’m so excited it feels like Christmas,” SUBURGATORY creator Emily Kapnek told me of working on her show’s second season. “I get up and go to work and I’m so happy and excited. So much of the pressure from season 1 — obviously we have this new time slot [after MODERN FAMILY] and there’s pressure about it — but I really feel like being a returning show and coming back, I feel like everything has gelled and settled. I feel like we know who we are. The writers have a bunch of great scripts coming in. It’s very exciting.”
As for that hour-later time slot, Kapnek said the content of the show shouldn’t change drastically…though she does have a few ideas for ways to shake things up.
“I was jokingly asking [ABC president] Paul [Lee] if we were allowed to do full-frontal at 9:30,” she laughed. “I think there’s a little more leniency with the standards stuff. We certainly have the ability to go there.”
That’s part of what makes SUBURGATORY so special — they have the ability to toe the line, while still keeping the core essence of why you fell for the series to begin with. It’s a family show with a bit of an edge, quirky — sometimes insane — characters who have heart, that can be ridiculously funny. And tonight’s premiere is packed with all of that.
“A lot happens in the premiere,” Kapnek teased. “We have the return of Tessa to Chatswin. And we learn that over the summer, she got to spend a chunk of time in New York; George loosened his grip enough to let her spend some time with her grandmother. And she comes back with this new interest in her mom, and how she feels about her mom. And as this happens, the Chatwsin Fall Follies are happening. So we have this great talent show. The Shay family has something insane planned that they do everything. And Lisa is armed with this big piece of information she has about Ryan’s adoption, so she’s milking that and saying, you know, if you want me to keep this secret, shit around here is going to change.”
Elsewhere, Dallas and Noah get into a nasty fight over something they both desperately want: Carmen.
“We have the battle for Carmen heating up as Noah and Dallas go head-to-head to keep Carmen in their households,” Kapnek shared. “It should be fun. There’s a lot of good stuff.”
And, as a bonus, there’s a musical performance of a song you just might recognize…
