FRINGE: Joshua Jackson Teases ‘A Pretty Major Shift’ For Peter
October 22, 2012 by Marisa Roffman
In case the week off from FRINGE dulled your enthusiasm for the show’s final year, take note: this week’s episode is a pretty big hour.
“[FRINGE showrunner] Joel [Wyman] has talked — at least with us, I think also in the press — about treating this season as sort of a three-act show,” FRINGE star Joshua Jackson shared with reporters on set last month. “So [episodes] 1 through 4 are our first act. Then something big happens at the end of 4, which launches us into the second half or the second piece [of the story]…which takes one of our characters into a direction that people, I think, will probably be pretty excited about, but is not good for that character.”
And for Jackson, he’s finding that knowing where things are going has helped him try to navigate the show’s sometimes tricky path.
“It’s good this year, because we actually as cast members are, if not fully aware, we’re more aware of what [the] story is,” Jackson said. “So we’re able to answer better the questions. But it also makes it easier for us to do the job, because…I’ll just speak for myself — if I’m not good in this season, it’s my own damn fault, because I have a much clearer understanding of…what is required of the character in each piece of the story because Joel has been really incredibly communicative about that three-act idea of ‘You start here, then these are the signposts along the way. By 4, you need to be here so that by 8 you can be here so by 13 you can be here.’”
But when Jackson was asked what Peter’s biggest challenge was in 2036, that’s when things got a little, um, alarming.
“You’ll have to ask me again after you see episode 4,” he teased. “Because for all the characters, there’s pretty major revelations through this three-act play that we’re doing, but for him there’s a pretty major shift that comes after 4. Duh dun dun…How is that for a tease?”
Um…pretty worrisome.
