ONCE UPON A TIME: Ginnifer Goodwin on Shooting the Emotional (And Complicated) Reunion in ‘Into the Deep’

ONCE UPON A TIME staged an emotional reunion last night as Snow and Charming finally saw each other after spending most of the season torn apart in different worlds. The only catch? They were in a fire-filled dream state.

And while it might have been a bit heartbreaking for fans of the duo to witness, it turns out it wasn’t that easy to film, either.

“It was a really hard scene to film with Josh [Dallas (Charming/David)] because [I] have never filmed anything like this in my life,” Ginnifer Goodwin (Snow/Mary Margaret) told reporters on the Vancouver set. “We filmed everything together — and I mean from every angle — and then we filmed again everything, each of us, from the front, and then each of us, again, everything from the back so that we could be made translucent depending on the camera angle.”

“So, to do something that emotional, and not to have a scene partner in front of you can be pretty challenging but also pretty inspiring in that ‘actor school’ kind of way,” she continued. “I cried every time I read that scene in the script but did not realize until we were filming that there was a shift in the dynamic between Emma and Snow [after that Snow/Charming meeting], where Emma has to really get Snow under control and take over as leader…The dynamic between Emma and Snow shifts because of that experience; Snow needs a bit of care-taking after coming face-to-face with Charming and thinking they were going to be together, even if it was a hallucinatory dream state and they’re not even able to touch.”
