FRIENDS Poll: Were Ross and Rachel on a Break?

16 years (and one day) ago, FRIENDS’ Rachel uttered words she’d soon come to regret to Ross, her boyfriend of a year: “Maybe we should take a break.” He, at first, thought they should get some froyo, but she quickly clarified, “No. A break from us.”
And things were never quite the same for the duo again.
Sure, they got back together, broke up, she realized she still loved him as he was marrying someone else, he said the wrong name at the altar, they got drunkenly married in Vegas, he loved her/wouldn’t get a third divorce, they had a “bonus night” which led to Rachel getting pregnant and them moving in together (as friends), he wanted to try their relationship again, but she accidentally got engaged to Joey, they danced around maybe getting back together, she moved out, she fell for Joey, and then eventually they did reunite…but had those words never been uttered, odds are Ross never would have slept with the copy girl, and hey, Ross might have proposed to Rachel in the way he laid out as their fake engagement story in “The One In Massapequa.”
And while Ross and Rachel could never come to an agreement about whether they were on a break when he slept with someone else — and neither could their friends — the FRIENDS fans in my life seem to be equally split about whether he was single when he did the deed. (Yes, I still talk about FRIENDS all these years later with my friends. If you follow me on Twitter, I’m sure you’re SHOCKED by this revelation.)
So on this day, a day we celebrate love, I want to know what you think — were Ross and Rachel on a break?

I’ve never understood Rachel’s standing her. SHE was the one who said they needed a break from “us” and she never asked him NOT to date or sleep with anyone else. then she finds out and breaks up with him because she can’t trust him, even though he had NEVER shown himself to be a cheater and obviously only did it because he was heartbroken and thought they were broken UP.
Clearly this was all a plot device to end their relationship on the writer’s part, but I can’t believe that Rachel would have ever been that self righteous about that when she knew how long Ross had been in love with her and had never even looked at another woman while they were together.
Technolly they were on a break from them but not the commitment,so he didn’t really cheat on her,but it didn’t give him the right to be with with another woman.

After watching their argument scene over and over, it has become clear that they were NOT on a break.. Rachel only suggested that they should take a break. Her exact line was “..maybe we should just take a break!” The word MAYBE makes it a suggestion rather than an actual official break up. Ross was just shocked at the idea and made him run off and Rachel left to think that Ross actually took that offer. Mark invited himself over and when Ross called Rachel to make up, Ross found out Mark was there and didn’t let Rachel explain. I’m with Rachel on the whole break up issue but I’m on Ross’ side when Rachel sabotages his relationships.
They were on a break. If you remember the episode after she suggests it, Monica asks how the anniversary date went and Rachel says they ended up breaking up instead… Obviously it’s hurtful knowing he slept with someone so soon but she did initiate the break up.
