NBC Cancels SMASH

It’s official: after being banished to Saturdays (and airing its finale on a random Sunday), SMASH won’t be returning to NBC for a third season.

SMASH was one of my favorite pilots last year, and it’s been a rough ride since then. Hopefully when it concludes on May 26th, there will be enough closure.

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: ABC has renewed some shows. This time around, it’s the Patricia Heaton-led THE MIDDLE and Tim Allen’s LAST MAN STANDING.

Getting the not-so-great news are freshman drama, RED WIDOW, freshman comedy, MALIBU COUNTRY, and the retooled BODY OF PROOF.

NBC Cancels THE NEW NORMAL

And then there were none…the only remaining freshman comedy at NBC has been canceled as the network has opted to not move forward with a season 2 of THE NEW NORMAL.

ABC Renews MODERN FAMILY, Cancels HAPPY ENDINGS

Good news and bad news for ABC comedies: ABC has renewed MODERN FAMILY, but opted to cancel HAPPY ENDINGS.

However, if you’re a fan of HAPPY ENDINGS, all hope is not totally lost: there are reports cable outlets might be interested in picking it up.

ABC Picks Up THE GOLDBERGS and SUPER FUN NIGHT

ABC has picked up two new comedies for the 2013-2014 season: THE GOLDBERGS and SUPER FUN NIGHT.

THE GOLDBERGS is a family comedy set in the 1980s, based on creator Adam F. Goldberg’s childhood. It stars Wendi McLendon-Covey, Jeff Garlin, and George Segal.

SUPER FUN NIGHT revolves around nerdy friends and their quest to have fun on Fridays. It stars Rebel Wilson, Kelen Coleman, Kevin Bishop, Lauren Ash, and Liza Lapira.

ABC Picks Up MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

And we finally have the first pickup of any kind for ABC’s 2013-2014 season: MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

“ABC has picked up Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD. More to come next week. Congrats! #AgentsofSHIELD” – ABC’s publicity account tweeted out.

The series will focus on military law-enforcement agency Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistic Directorate, which may be familiar to those who have seen any of the Marvel movies (AVENGERS, IRON MAN, etc.). The series is set to star Ming-Na, Clark Gregg, Brett Dalton, Elizabeth Henstridge, Ian De Caestecker, and Chloe Bennet.

Report: CBS Cancels GOLDEN BOY and RULES OF ENGAGEMENT

Add two more to the growing pile of CBS shows not returning: The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that freshman drama GOLDEN BOY and long-running comedy RULES OF ENGAGEMENT will not return for the 2013-2014 season.

CBS Cancels CSI:NY and VEGAS

After nine seasons, CBS is opting to not renew CSI: NY, Deadline reports. What turned out to be its series finale aired back in February.

Additionally, Deadline is reporting that freshman series VEGAS will also not be returning. Its series finale airs tonight.
