CASTLE: Molly Quinn Shares Her Favorite Season 5 Moment
July 1, 2013 by Marisa Roffman
CASTLE is still several months away from returning, but fans can get their dose of the show with TNT reruns and ABC’s Sunday night re-airings of season 5.
And while I don’t have season 6 intel for you guys (yet), to tide you over a little bit, I wanted to share what Molly Quinn (Alexis) told me was one of her proudest moments of last season:
“Most people, I’m sure, didn’t pick up on this, but [at the end of] the Christmas episode, where Alexis and Gram are sitting around the table, and they see Castle and they both tell him they canceled their plans [for him],” Quinn shared. “And they’re going to be there, and then Nathan [Fillion’s Castle] realizes that he needs to be with Beckett and he looks over at Martha and you see she understands. And then you pan over to Alexis, and she’s really not okay with it.”
“I really thought that was an insight into how Alexis does feel about their relationship and that she had given up her evening to spend time with her dad and he could just run off,” she continued. “And she isn’t okay with that. I don’t know a daughter that would be okay with that. It definitely was not written that way, that was something I had to campaign for, and I’m really glad they kept that in.”

Isn’t Alexis 19? shouldn’t she act like a grown woman?
Seeing as the evening that Alexis was giving up was one in which she was going to abandon her dad on Christmas Eve to be with the new boyfriend, my sympathy is limited.
I think I just threw up in my mouth on that one.Really? Like good old Alexis wasnt going to just dump daddy dearest for the latest boyfriend? Please. Who thinks Alexis needs a pair of big girl panties and huge cup of reality check to got with them? *raises hand really high*
I have to partially disagree with the three of you. Personally I was unhappy with just about everyone in that episode except for (and this should be a red flag to the writers of the show) Gates. Alexis and Martha for originally planning to spend the evening away from Castle; Beckett for the lie – her reason for usually working would have been fine if it hadn’t come out in the aftermath of being caught in yet another blatant lie, as it was it became an excuse; Ryan – you buy your wife lingerie as a Christmas present and you leave it in plain view on you desk at work … really dude!!? ; Esposite – you should be the last person in your entire group of firends, except for maybe Lanie, to give parenting or relationship advice, and the thing with the dancing with the lingerie was just weak; Lanie – I agree with her reasoning but her tone when she turned down Esposito was so condescending I nearly puked, not cool; and finally Castle – once again showed himself as a great person when he basically forgave Beckett yet another lie and for a while I was happy because he didn’t beg to get her to spend the evening with him but in that last scene I am entirely with Molly on Alexis’ reaction, grow a backbone man – your family changed their plans for the night to be with you and now you’ll just leave them at the table to go off and be with you emotional coward of a girlfriend… really, really weak. Personally I have had some serious issues with Alexis’ behavior since early S2, for the supposedly super daughter that she was being sold as she displayed so many instances of disrespect to her father starting with the scene in interrogation in Foll Me Once ( honestly anyone saying that what we saw in that scene is OK is out of their mind) up until Secret’s Safe.. But at some point in early S5 she finally started acting like mature beyond her years person that we kept being told she is for 4 seasons. There is something else that bugs me about that period – there is this idea, at least among fanfic writers that Beckett has supposedly been very helpful with advice to Castle when it comes to Alexis, which I find odd since I can think only a handful of times that has been the case, mostly she uses Castle’s stressing over Alexis’ behavior as an opening to poke fun at him or tease or outright taunt him with her own past activities or in some cases she has completely brushed off his worries (which were more than once entirely understandable and more than once proven to be founded) which is the opposite of helpful as far as I’m concerned. So again I have to back Alexis’ reaction at the end of Secret Santa as completely understandable and at least a little justified even if she is not aware of Beckett’s actions in those particular instances.
Yulii, I absolutely agree with everything you’ve said… well put! It will be interesting to see how Alexis and Beckett’s relationship in Season 6 shapes up. I’m hoping they don’t go for obvious, unnecessary angst… a slow, tentative bonding and mutual respect would be more realistic.
I see where Molly is coming from, but her character was planning to ditch dear old dad first. So, not much sympathy from me. She knows her dad is madly in love with Kate, so she should have been all in with his decision.
If you’ve ever raised a daughter from birth to being a woman, I think you might understand Alexis’ actions – – – especially at nineteen.
Just a thought
