REVOLUTION: NBC Boss Robert Greenblatt on the Night Change and Rating Woes
July 27, 2013 by Marisa Roffman
After spending its first season supported by THE VOICE lead-in, REVOLUTION will be on the move next season, making the attempt to launch NBC’s Wednesday night. And while that shift may worry some fans, NBC bosses are playing it cool.
“I never have any real expectations for anything,” Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, NBC Entertainment told reporters after the NBC executive Television Critics Association session. “We love the show, it’s going to be difficult in a 8 o’clock time period, I’m excited about it creatively, and I’m going to hope for the best.”
But that’s not to say Greenblatt isn’t aware the show had its ratings issues after it returned from its midseason hiatus.
“I think any show goes through some of that,” Greenblatt acknowledged. “You take a show off, it’s in a little bit of harm’s way; you leave a show on for all those months, it’s on for two, it’s off for three, on for two, off for three, it’s in harm’s way. And the competition, it just is a challenge. I’m not happy about the decline, but there still is a strong pulse there. I think creatively, they have some really good ideas about the second season: was it too much war? Was it too much this? Was it too much that? You just go through the creative process of how do you build the show up?”
Genre shows have often gotten a bad rap when viewership declines, but Greenblatt indicated he didn’t think that was the problem here.
“I don’t think the genre is harder; you just look at each show individually,” he said. “One could say that you’ve got that big idea and those characters you care about, and why wouldn’t that be a stronger hook for an audience? I don’t think it’s the genre. I think there’s so many elements that go into this: the creative, the time period, the time of year, the lead-in. You just have to try and deal with all those factors.”
