About Last Night…BROOKLYN NINE-NINE, NEW GIRL, THE MINDY PROJECT, and More

Once again, my night was dominated by Fox, so let’s talk about the comedy block the network brought us…

DADS: A lot, lot, lot, lot, lot has been said about how terrible DADS is/was/will be. Admittedly, I don’t think it was a great pilot (I’ve seen episode 2, which I enjoyed more, but yeah, that pilot is rough), but I’m very curious what you guys think. Was it as bad as you thought it might be? Or did you like it?

BROOKLYN NINE-NINE: Comedy pilots are traditionally really, really difficult to do right (in fact, of the comedies I love most, the pilot often ranks high on my mental list of least favorite episodes), but from minute one, BROOKLYN NINE-NINE knew what it was: it didn’t feel like there were growing pains, the cast gelled, and the world was wholly believable. I’m curious how the cases will work on a week-to-week basis, but from what I saw in the pilot, I’m hopeful about this show.

NEW GIRL: When I sat down to watch Fox’s lineup last night, this was the only episode the network hadn’t sent in advance. I can (mostly) understand why. Eesh. It felt like what went down could have been a between seasons webisode or something, versus a season premiere. (And, really, can we give Winston a storyline that has some substance? Please?)

THE MINDY PROJECT: I was really surprised how well James Franco worked on this show. He’s been so hit-or-miss on past projects in recent years that it really could have gone either way. I thought TMP handled Mindy’s brief time in Haiti pretty great — we got a feel for what her life was like, without it overshadowing the rest of the episode. (Also, the fact that Mindy and Danny exchanged letters is just the cutest thing.)
