THE VOICE Season 5 Premiere: A Few Thoughts, Plus Video of the Fastest Four-Chair Turn Ever!
September 20, 2013 by Marisa Roffman
THE VOICE has been touting that the original coaches are reunited and it feels so good…and after watching the fifth season premiere, I can’t say they’re wrong.
I can’t say too much about what went down (that would absolutely ruin the fun), I can share a few thoughts about the premiere…and give you guys a preview of the fastest four-chair turn the show has ever had…
- The coaches kick off the season by singing Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll.” (And, fun fact, Britney Spears once covered that song, too.)
- While the original coaches always had chemistry, there were times in the past where the tension/fights between them could be uncomfortable. There was no sign of that in season 5, it jut felt fun and relaxed. Perhaps absence made the heart grow fonder, because there was dancing, hugging, alliances, spanking (seriously), spontaneous songs, and more. (And for those of you who dig the Blake Shelton/Adam Levine bromance, there are several moments that will delight you.)
- One contestant tells Adam something that probably half of America would tell him if given the chance.
- There are some truly gutting backstories for a few contestants, but unlike some other shows, these feel necessary to be shared — it adds a level of understanding to where the emotion in these people’s voice comes from. I’m always thankful when we learn about reality show contestants who have had tragedies in their lives and don’t feel like it’s being absolutely exploited. (That being said, a contestant in the premiere completely made me cry.)
- I went to a taping of one of the blind auditions earlier this summer and Matthew Schuler was one of the contestants I was lucky enough to see perform. Check out how fast these coaches push their button for him…
THE VOICE premieres Monday, September 23rd at 8 PM on NBC.

It’s not Joan Jett’s “I love rock n roll.” Joan Jett covered the Arrows 1975 original. The Arrows also wrote the song. Stop confusing the copyright of this song.
It’s flawed journalism and perpetuates a myth. She did not write the song, no more than Britney Spears did.
For example, in the sixties The Byrds had a big hit with a then relatively obscure folk singer Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man,” but it was always a Bob Dylan song.
Tell the truth!
“I Love Rock N Roll” composed by Alan Merrill and Jake Hooker
Original recording by the Arrows (1975).
