MOM: What You Need to Know About the New CBS Series
September 23, 2013 by Marisa Roffman
There are approximately one million new shows debuting this season*, and it’s going to get difficult to keep track of them all.
To help you out, for every new show, I’m going to basically create a hub of info on the day of the premiere — pilot photos, my quick take on the pilot (or what I’ve seen so far), what’s been written about it so far, and when you can watch it.
Next up, MOM…
MOM
"Pilot" -- Christy (Anna Faris, center), a waitress, works in a posh Napa Valley restaurant with Chef Rudy (French Stewart, right) and her manager/married boyfriend, Gabriel (Nate Corddry, left), on MOM, a new comedy about a newly sober single mom raising two children in a world full of temptations and pitfalls. The new Chuck Lorre comedy premieres Monday, Sept. 23 (9:00-9:30PM ET/PT) on CBS. Photo: CBS é2013 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
*Maybe not scientifically correct. But close enough.
CBS’ description: “MOM is a comedy from executive producer Chuck Lorre starring Anna Faris as Christy, a waitress at a posh Napa Valley establishment who is four months clean and doing her best to be a good mom and overcome a history of questionable choices. Her sobriety is tested when her recovering alcoholic mom, Bonnie, played by Emmy Award winner Allison Janney, reappears chock-full of passive-aggressive insights into Christy’s many mistakes. Bonnie joins Christy’s already complicated circle of relationships: her handsome, married boss – and lover – Gabriel; the restaurant’s hot-tempered chef, Rudy; her pretty, 16-going-on-25-year-old daughter, Violet; her sweet but overly honest son, Roscoe; her irresponsible ex and Roscoe’s father, Baxter; and Violet’s clueless boyfriend, Luke. Christy tries to remain positive as she pursues her new path in life, but she faces an uphill battle, surrounded by a dubious support system – and a copious amount of dysfunction. ”
My take: The single best moment in the pilot is a dramatic one, but it’s so wildly out of place from the rest of the episode, I don’t have much faith it’ll continue on. I’ll watch a few more episodes, but given how crazy Monday nights are, it’ll need to click fast for it to remain on my DVR.
