PERSON OF INTEREST: Jonathan Nolan, Greg Plageman, and Sarah Shahi Tease ‘Lady Killer’
October 8, 2013 by Marisa Roffman
It’s time for the women of PERSON OF INTEREST to take center stage in tonight’s brand new episode, “Lady Killer.” And while at first glance, it might seem like a simple one-off, there are deeper issues being raised in the hour.
“I think it’s a good example of a standalone story that opens up Carter’s character in a fun sort of way,” PERSON OF INTEREST executive producer Greg Plageman teased to reporters after a screening of the episode. “But also the Root storyline is giving us a greater glimpse into the serialized aspect regarding her relationship with the Machine and what that’s going to mean for her and Finch.”
“Never underestimate a strong woman who has access to a networked artificial intelligence,” executive producer Jonathan Nolan pointed out.
Of course, none of this might have been possible if the show hadn’t committed to expanding the world these characters live in with regular guests (Paige Turco’s Zoe) and more permanent quasi-allies (Sarah Shahi’s Shaw).
“There’s something about introducing new characters; the world of the show has expanded since season 1…we had a chance to put these three ladies together, and put a unique spin on what they do,” Nolan explained. “We were just thrilled.”
And the writers weren’t the only ones who basked the in ability to try something new.
“I think [the actresses] were delighted,” Plageman said. “It was a bit of a departure in tone in the story, which was fun. And every time we bring Paige back, it seems to bring a different kind of energy. And Sarah lets her hair down, which is fun, too.”
For her part, when I spoke with Shahi about the episode, she was equally as thrilled about the experience.
“It was great!” she enthused. “It was kind of my first time working with Taraji [P. Henson (Carter)]. And Paige! The actors on the show, they’re so wonderful, but it can be such a boys club, that it’s nice that we had one episode that was pretty much all women. Shaw had to put on another tight dress…it was just fun. It was just really fun hanging out with just girls.”
But in case you’re worried the episode will feel drastically different from a normal PERSON OF INTEREST hour, Shahi assured that won’t be the case.
“I don’t think it changed the mood of the episode, because the women are such badasses,” Shahi pointed out. “It’s not like we needed to pull hair and hit someone over the head with our heels. We can all throw punches and kicks and we know how to use sidearms. It just became hotter!”
