SUPERNATURAL: Jeremy Carver and Robert Singer Offer a Few Season 9 Teases
October 8, 2013 by Marisa Roffman
SUPERNATURAL kicks off its ninth season tonight, and while the hour is very good, there’s also virtually nothing that can be said pre-air that wouldn’t massively spoil what goes down.
And while the SUPERNATURAL cast and executive producers were very good at teasing what’s to come this season while they made the Comic-Con rounds, I had a few additional questions for executive producers Jeremy Carver and Robert Singer about what was going down…
One thing that was kind of skimmed over in all of the Comic-Con questioning was how Sam is doing physically when the season picks up. What can you say about how and why Sam gets better?
Robert Singer: He gets better. [Laughs]
Jeremy Carver: We can’t really speak much to that, but we can say it is a preeminent concern in episode one.
Was that the elephant in the room you were trying to dance around at Comic-Con?
JC: Yes….I don’t know how far we’re going to push the elephant metaphor, but the elephant has many trunks.
Fair. I know last year you spoke of a multi-season arc for the show’s mythology. Has that plan changed at all?
JC: No. When I spoke to the multi-season arc, it is like an accordion. There are elements we can stretch and contract as long as we’re always staying true to the brothers’ relationship; everything else is pliant. As long as everything feels fresh.
RS: We’ve actually opened it up this year.
JC: Yes. While still staying on that same track. And that was somewhat purposeful in saying that, well, maybe [season] 9 won’t be the last year, so we always need to leave that open.
That’s good to hear. Aside from the mythology, which you’re understandably a little more hesitant to speak about, what standalone episodes can you tease?
JC: We’re going to have in episode 4 a flashback to the first Men of Letters who ever inhabited the bunker. And that case, for a reason that will be explained on air, will dive into a very important aspect of THE WIZARD OF OZ, which is going to be fun. It’ll be full of laughs and heart.
There will be an episode — and we’ve waited nine years to do this, but we will have an episode where Dean speaks to animals. It’s been a long-held dream of his.
There will be another early episode where we flash back to the young boys — we’re going to see a part of Dean and a life experience for Dean that both the audience and Sam never really suspected. So we’re going to uncover a part of Dean we didn’t realize existed. It’ll be a very emotional episode for Dean.

SUPERNATURAL premieres tonight at 9 PM on The CW. And make sure to come back to Give Me My Remote after the episode ends to hear what Jensen Ackles (Dean) and Jared Padalecki (Sam) had to say about what went down in the premiere…

A very emotional episode for Dean. A part of Dean we didn’t suspect and Sam didn’t suspect existed. VERY EMOTIONAL EPISODE FOR DEAN. I am too excited for words!!! I can’t wait. Feels. And more Feels.
Awww, I love when they do kid-chester flashbacks. Emotional Dean stuff sounds good. And also the multi trunked elephant is interesting, meaning that there are cards they are keeping close to their vest beyond the saving Sam thing.
I’m actually sick to death of emo Dean. He always gets emotional insight – always. And Sam never does, not even when he’s crazy. Chances are high that this episode will wind up pissing me off because once again, Sam will be emotionally focussed on Dean while Dean is emotionally focussed on Dean and nobody is giving emotional insight into Sam. Again.
@ Penny. Are you kidding? Dean is emotionally focused on SAM in every episode, just watch tonight. I’d kill for some Sam angst over Dean for a change, with a story for Dean, about Dean. I loved when there was emo Sam worried for his brother, like in the old days.
As for this, it sounds as if they’re going to pull an unknown kid out of the hat, and that I do not want…
Wait, How does someone who hates dogs and is allergic to cats have a long held dream of being able to talk to animals?
Sounds like a steaming pile of shyt if you ask me. Someone wants to make it look like dean actually has something to do this season besides cater to poor widdle Sammikins.
WHAT SHOW can YOU possibly be watching Penny? Dean all about Dean? Are you freaking kidding me?
EVERYTHING and EVERYBODY is ALWAYS about Sam! Especially Dean! His entire existence is ALL about living, breathing, and existing for Sam! And Sam is ALL about Sam most of the time as well! There’s no way you can think what you think and be watching the same show.Wow.
Sam gets EVERY major storyline, while Dean gets next to nothing. What you’re really pissed about is that it sounds like, finally, SOMETHING is about Dean for a change and you don’t like that.
I’m also twigging onto the Dean emotional bit. And now they’ve pushed the episode farther back into the season (after they shot it). That wigs me out.
I can’t wait for this. We’ve had plenty of hints about Dean having to be a “parent” at a very early age. I’d really like to explore this or whatever other childhood trauma they are willing to share. There’s a reason Dean has taken the “grunt” role and Sam got the opportunity to be more cerebral. And it’s not just raw intellect — they’re both very smart. It’s life choices EARLY on. I’d like to see some of that.
Sam does get a lot more focus when it comes to the major mythology of the show than Dean usually does. I am a bit annoyed that Dean’s major story arcs usually are what his emotional reactions to what is going on with other characters, than something actually being wrong with him for once.
Personally, I am hoping Dean’s ‘life experience’ has something to do with him dabbling in witchcraft. And maybe just maybe in that episode we see Bobby again, and then he finds out about Dean using witchcraft, and what if Dean did something bad with the magic. I can see a lot of emotions coming out of that for young Dean.
It would be interesting if this all took place in the episode with the old girlfriend
Well, obviously we’ll be getting even more proof that Dean is a disney princess.
