About Last Night…THE MILLERS, THE CRAZY ONES, SCANDAL, and More
November 1, 2013 by Marisa Roffman
Happy day after Halloween! Thanks to the holiday, there were a bunch of reruns and specials, but let’s talk about what aired…
SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE HALLOWEEN SPECIAL: Yeah, I totally watched this. I had already seen all of the sketches, but man, some of those — especially the Stefon Weekend Update bit — made me miss the past few seasons.
THE MILLERS: Hmm…I wonder if the show will change the fact Carol is always right. It would feel like that would limit her growth, and while I get this is a multi-camera comedy, you’d think they couldn’t keep her exactly like that forever. She might be right, but she isn’t always likeable, and in order to give her depth, occasionally being wrong (or seeing her flaws) might help with that.
(I may have just given wayyyyyyy too much thought to that.)
THE CRAZY ONE: It was nice to see more emotional vulnerability from Sydney, even though it came at the expense of being screwed over by her high school crush. (The very meta BONES references? A+. Not only is SMG’s former BUFFY co-star, David Boreanaz, the star of BONES, but her real-life husband, Freddie Prinze Jr. appeared on BONES’ ninth season premiere. And they started the gag on Fox’s New York street where you could clearly see the place that BONES uses as the Royal Diner. So, that was all delightful.) It was great to see the team rally around her after she was crushed. But, um, I’m a little scared of Lauren now…she’s clearly given too much thought to her takeover idea…
SCANDAL: Ugh, so good. Mellie asking for Olivia’s help to run Fitz’s campaign was absolutely gutting. It wasn’t selfless, but the pain etched on Mellie’s face as she conceded that only Olivia would bring Fitz the spark of life he needed to even run a campaign was just so raw. But even if Olivia was about to take the job, the end of episode twist that Fitz was responsible for killing her mother is surely going to put a bump in any sort of peace between the two of them. Obviously, Fitz wouldn’t have known Olivia’s mother was on the plane at the time, but it could get verrrrrry tricky if he realized he was responsible for her death at any point after. I almost feel like nothing either Olivia or Fitz does in the past or present will actually keep them apart, so this will be a telling arc.
