BONES Recap: ‘The Nazi on the Honeymoon’
November 4, 2013 by Sarah Curtis
Hey, BONES fans! Another hiatus is under our belts. How did you like this episode, “The Nazi on the Honeymoon”? It wasn’t necessarily what I expected, but in the end, I liked it pretty well. It was fun to see Booth and Brennan away from Washington D.C. Let’s discuss!
THE CASE:
Booth and Brennan are in Buenos Aires for their honeymoon. Booth wants to visit some waterfall pools, but Brennan takes him somewhere special to her…a local morgue. They meet Dr. Leticia Perez, the coroner. She is aware of Brennan’s work, and it is Brennan who notices a recent skeleton within the mass grave remains Leticia is working on.
The Victim: Originally known as the 90 year old wealthy Miguel Silva, Brennan and Booth find out the man is a Nazi war criminal named Haupt.
The Case Progression: Leticia connects Booth with a local detective, Raphael Valenza. He is a great admirer of Brennan’s novels, especially Andy Lister. Booth is pleased to hear he has a fan, and this theme continues throughout the episode. It’s a fun little sub-plot.
Brennan and Leticia discuss the case with Clark, Cam, Hodgins and Angela who are back at the lab. They analyze bone samples and also find traces of wood on the victim.
Booth and Raphael talk to Miguel’s wife, the much younger Bianca. She insists that being young and gorgeous is not a crime and that she did not kill her husband. Booth suggests that she had an inheritance to gain, and therefore motive, but Bianca tells him that wasn’t how it worked. She only got a cash allowance from her husband.
Booth and Raphael watch security footage from the location Miguel’s body was found. They see a black BMW pull in and out around the time the body was killed, and they are able to track the BMW to a bad part of town. The car is mostly gutted, but Booth finds a small box with a key inside. The key leads them to the cellar of Miguel’s home, and they find a lot of Nazi paraphernalia.
Brennan, Booth, Leticia and Raphael examine the room and see a few pieces of wood matching that found on the victim. Angela’s research shows that the wood was from an old mine that housed Nazi gold. Brennan and Leticia work on the victim’s skeleton and find traces of gold, leading them to believe a gold bar was the murder weapon.
Raphael and Booth talk with a former officer (who wants Booth’s signature) and trace the gold to a local dealer, who says he bought the gold from a young woman.
The Verdict: Raphael and Booth catch Bianca with a lot of cash. She insists the gold was hers to sell, and she didn’t kill her husband. When Leticia tells Brennan she will finish constructing the skeleton, they shake on it. Brennan realizes that Leticia had a similar bone defect as the victim. She, Booth and Raphael question her on this and her relationship with Haupt. She is his granddaughter and was horrified by his past. He was laughing at her, and she struck him with the gold until he stopped laughing. Raphael arrests her.
THE SQUINTS:
There wasn’t a lot of squint action in this episode, and most of what was there centered around Hodgins and Angela being responsible for Christine while B&B were away. It was definitely strange to see the new young actress as Christine, especially since it seems like there were other episodes where it made more sense to have her included. It also seemed like she was older and bigger than little Mikey, which doesn’t make sense, since he should be at least 8 months older than she is.
I did like the part when Booth and Sweets talked on the phone and Sweets was in Booth’s office — that was fun.
BOOTH AND BRENNAN:
I think in terms of a B&B honeymoon, this isn’t exactly what I wanted to see, but there were some fun and sweet moments between the newlyweds. And I thought they were both genuine about loving working together. They both also looked gorgeous and happy, and I loved that.
One interesting moment was when Leticia was surprised at Brennan being a mother. It was a little heavy-handed, in terms of the idea of wanting children, considering Brennan’s path, but for the most part it worked.
This episode reminded me of others they’ve done where Booth and Brennan work with peers (like the season 4 premiere or season 6’s “The Finder”), and while that’s not my favorite dynamic, I actually liked Booth’s interactions with Raphael a lot. I think it would have been a great episode if it wasn’t ALSO the honeymoon episode, if that makes sense.
Other fun moments:
- When Angela called Brennan the worst vacation taker in the world, it was funny to hear Leticia say “I concur,” a classic Brennan line.
- I like that Booth’s crime-fighting inspiration is Superman.
- Like I said before, it was a fun sub-plot that Andy Lister is so revered in Buenos Aires. It made me laugh when Brennan suggested she might kill Andy in her next book, with Booth replying that it would only cause them to make him a saint. Good times.
Enough from me; what did you think? Were you surprised by the killer? Did you like the case? And don’t forget that there are two episodes airing next week! See you then!

Wow! I have watched every episode twice so I love the show but it saddens me to say that this is the WORST episode they have done! Maybe there were some high expectations surrounding the “Honeymoon” theme but I was mad when it was over. My beef is this: 1. We never saw them get together originally in season six, not even the sweet conversation in a flashback, 2. They have each had love scenes in the past with other people so it’s not like the show has never done a love scene..we got the pretend dream scene but that wasn’t real, 3. It is there honeymoon and we get less action then in other episodes!!! This should have been a vacation ep not the Honeymoon. I know it’s just a show but us loyal fans have invested time in the show and have waited long enough! Holding out now after they are already married is just ticking people off! I LOVE the show for so many reasons and will continue to watch but with lower expectations! They (the writers/creators) have to know most people want this. Not asking for trashy or overdone but something would make it all more believable…
KM, well said. I agree 100% so disappointing. I expected some romance. Booth always wanted a loving wife and family, he now has one and never makes one mention of how happy Brennan has made him. Near the end I was hoping they would be on a dance floor whispering their love for each other and saying let’s pay the tab and go make love. At least a passionate kiss, there isn’t even a guy hug.
I had hopes during the opening. I like(d) the show best when B&B are together. After the commercial break they were RARELY together. I didn’t care for the case either, a 90 year old Nazi that no one cared about or missed. There was a time I couldn’t get thru an ep of Bones without crying over the victim or their loved ones loss.
I completed agree KM and Jo. The wedding episode was beautiful and well written by Karine Rosenthal and thought it would continue with the honeymoon, but was not the case. Although Brennan always worked on a case on vacation this was their honeymoon. Booth said he is the romantic one, when is he going to show it with her. With Hannah there was romance, he made her dinner, they went to bed and he kissed her all the time. Brennan really only cares about her work in the lab and was hoping that Booth could change that. Booth said they did do things on their honeymoon, but we did not get to see it.
I had to stop watching 10 minutes into the episode as I was so mad to see how bad they have portrayed Buenos Aires. For you all that never been there, please do not believe this poor version of the truth. I was surprise to see how little idea they have regarding the city and culture. They definitely do not have people selling stuff in the streets and old cars parked everywhere. Buenos Aires is really not a “vacation city” nor a tropical destination…it´s a cosmopolitan, busy and very much sophisticated urbe very different from other Latinamerican cities.
Salsa or whatever they decided to use as the episode musical bakground is not the typical music, Tango is in any case.
Well, these btwn other things are the reason why I could not watch/enjoy this episode.
Badly directed and written. What a shame!
Bad episode, i didn`t like that they show Argentina of that way.. In Argentina didn`t have that traditions, the only thing that matched is with the song of Mercedes Sosa, a big singer.. But we have many diferents styles of music.. Aguante Argentina

Maria that is i was trying to say..
As some have pointed out, it gave an incorrect depiction of Argentina. It looked more like a noir Havanna. To correctly depict Buenos Aires, you should have the Argentinian doctor mimicking a monkey and throwing bananas at the monitor when she saw that Cam was black (yeah, racism, now THAT is something BA is a city famous for doign with black tourists and sportists).
