On the Set of ALMOST HUMAN: The Cast Teases ‘The Bends’

ALMOST HUMAN has spent much of the first few episodes focusing on Kennex and Dorian — and their blossoming partnership — but a different character will get their time in the spotlight during next Monday’s brand new episode: Mackenzie Crook’s Rudy.

“We have Rudy going undercover [in ‘The Bends’], which is really fun,” ALMOST HUMAN star Minka Kelly (Valerie) shared with reporters on set last month while filming the hour.

“Seeing Rudy outside of the basement, he’s up in the world — I’m sure it’s going to be awkward and beautiful,” co-star Michael Irby (Paul) laughed. “He’s so excited! And Paul gets to train him, because we’re figuring out Paul came from Vice, so I’m giving him this little tutoring on how to keep it real [while undercover].”

Of course, as viewers may have gathered from our glimpses of Rudy so far, the man is significantly more comfortable around his gadgets than he is other people…which means he actually has to be talked into taking the assignment that would require him to infiltrate a drug ring.

“At first he is like, ‘no way,'” Crook explained of his character’s initial reaction to being asked to go undercover. “But then he gets romanced by the idea of being the hero.”

And it seems that once Rudy is on board, he will be all in.

“He’s launching himself into it, but not really quite knowing what he’s doing,” Crook noted. “He’s got this idea he wants to create a persona with snappy clothes [for his undercover personality], but really, it’s just Rudy in snappy clothes…So we’ll see…it turns out he’s not the actor he wishes he could be.”

But if Rudy does find himself needing some backup from the team, perhaps that will lead to what Michael Ealy (Dorian) found to be the theme of the hour.

“Every episode has a theme,” Ealy pointed out. “This one is about friendship and how friends are supposed to have each other’s back.  And you have to get dirty, sometimes, to solidify the friendship.”
