LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT: NBC Boss Robert Greenblatt on Cast Changes and the Show’s Future, Plus Dick Wolf Teases a CHICAGO PD Crossover
January 19, 2014 by Marisa Roffman
LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT has had its share of shakeups over the past few seasons, but the past few months have led to two mainstays departing the squad: Sergeant Munch (Richard Belzer) and Captain Cragen.
“I think the cast member changes have been the natural attrition of a show that’s 15 years old,” Robert Greenblatt told reporters after his executive session.. “I think it’s been great to bring new cast members into the show as well.”
But just because the show is down two people, Greenblatt said fans shouldn’t expect any new faces to suddenly appear any time soon.
“Between now and the end of the year? No,” he said.
Also not on tap this season: a move to a later time period.
“At the moment, we like it at 9 o’clock,” Greenblatt said. “It actually is a drama lead-in for us on a night that is important to launch a 10 o’clock show. It’s not moving anywhere for the rest of the season.”
And while Greenblatt was able to speculate on the future of his of NBC’s shows during his executive session, he opted not to tip his hand about SVU’s future when asked how long the show might run for, simply stating, “I have no idea.”
In the meantime, there will be a little bit more of SVU in our lives when the show crosses over with CHICAGO PD in the first episode post-Olympic break.
“The first episode back [SVU stars] Ice [T] and Kelli Giddish come to Chicago,” Dick Wolf said during a panel for CHICAGO PD. “Now [CHICAGO PD star] Sophia [Bush] is going to New York on Tuesday to do a scene with Mariska [Hargitay].”
